Better to keep low profile and catch them unprepared.

Why not? There are tons of teams in the Club House, why not Benfica? I'm sure with this new thread, there will be plenty of fans of the team to join in a support their club. If you don't like Benfica, or if you just simply don't care about Benfica, then don't open this thread. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Do you see what fans of other clubs in Portugal have to put up with? Every year its the same story.
They sign one or two big name has beens and then get all excited and claim that they will be European and World Champions and will win the league by 20 points.
The outcome. Another title for Porto, Benfica in 3rd or 4th and a disgraceful showing in European competition.
Stop living in the past and learn to be a bit humble and realistic.

Just pulled this from Wikipedia, Be mistaken I couldn't give an entire shite about Portuguese Football, and I can't help but think this thread will last about a week before vanashing. And it may need * Spoiler * tags,

Wiki Tells me on the 8th June 2009,

manager Quique Sánchez Flores resigns as coach after agreeing to a friendly contractual termination, he was replaced by former S.C. Braga manager Jorge Jesus on the 17 June, 2009.

It then goes on too say,

On July 12 2009, Benfica tied FC Sion 2-2 in its 1st of 10 pre-season friendlies of the 2009-2010 season with Oscar Cardozo and Javier Saviola scoring the goals. On July 13 2009, in their 2nd of 10 friendlies, they beat defending UEFA cup champions Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 with goals coming from Oscar Cardozo and Carlos Jorge Neto Martins. On July 16 2009, in their 3rd of 10 friendlies, Benfica beat Atletico Bilbao 2-1 with Javier Saviola scoring 2 2nd half goals. On July 18 2009, in their 4th of 10 friendlies they beat S.C. Olhanense 2-1 with a 74th min hi-lite goal from Oscar Cardozo and an injury time goal by Miguel Vitor. On July 21 2009, in their 5th of 10 friendlies, they lost to Atletico Madrid 2-1 with the only goal coming from Oscar Cardozo. The game was played infront of 58,000 fans at Estadio da Luz as this was the presentation game and the 1st game Simao Sabrosa played vs Benfica in an Atletico Madrid uniform.

And the heading is

New Benfica: Jorge Jesus Era - current years (2009-present)

Transfers In =

Patric — São Caetano — €3 million
Ramires — Cruzeiro — €7.5 million
José Shaffer — Racing Club — €1.5 million
Javier Saviola — Real Madrid — €5 million
Javi García — Real Madrid — €7 million
Weldon — Sport Recife — €200 thousand

I hardly think signing some above average players, well, 2 good players (Saviola and Garcia) = New Benfica: Jorge Jesus Era - current years (2009-present)

Hence why he is going on loan in the first place. Needs to develop his game more, but there is no denying the potential. Doesn't look pretty, but he scores goals. And I hope he ends up relegating Saviola to the bench.

You think he would've got time?

i do.
Spalletti has been hunting for a PK box striker this market, (for years actually).
and he has stated he would take players on loan and throw them right in to play at a proper CF poaching forward.

it was actually the preferred idea as the funds arent really there to sign Huntelaar for example. with only Totti and Vucinic really (Totti, injuries, Mirko, inconsistency) and Okaka who may or may not be loaned, and Baptista showing he cant really lead the line, we need a true Pippo-esque forward.

not Keirrison it seems, tho.

I'm happy Porto didn't get him on loan, personally loans without an option of buying are crap. Benfica did the same thing with Miccoli and they lost a key player afterwords, it just fucks with your team.

or worst defenses..what a terrible stat. Di Natale's got 9 in 7, Totti 6 in 7. against much better defenses. not sure about team's averages per match, but again, pretty much a waste of a stat, as obviously Benfica/Porto/Sporting our a tier above the rest of the Portuguese league, and even the top teams dont spend too much time on defense there from what ive seen.

Ok, But if it's so easy score goals against the Portuguese defenses, why Porto only scored 15 and Sporting 8 in the same 7 matches and Benfica score 24?

In Portugal all the teams play against the 3 top teams with 9 players in defense and 1 running alone in front.

If you see the results of Portuguese lower teams in Uefa in the past years, none of them lost by 5 or more goals.

beyond jimmys classy responses...always providing a compelling argument:

im simply stating that:
a league that isnt known for its defensive prowess (from what i have seen) with a club with the "best attack in the world" who arent even top of their table, certainly dont qualify for equaling achievements on par with more competition.

whoooaah, oh my gooooddd..

i dont think playing in a lesser competitive league, i.e. mid table teams not as good as other leagues mid table teams means best attack, best whatever. in Portugal perhaps. not Europe, and definitely not the world.
im not saying Porto, Benfica, etc other teams arent good. im sure they would give Roma a run for the money. but playing every week in the Portuguese Liga is not the same as in Italy, England, Spain, etc.

i also dont really feel that- tho its a great scoring record for a few games, i didnt wet my pants.

Totti has scored 16 for Roma so far since the season started, 10 of those in European competition.
Ronaldo 5 in 5 for Madrid.
Ibra, 5 in 6 for Barcelona.
Bent, 7 in 8 for Sunderland.

but perhaps as some feel- achievements are achievements, and scoring 8, 6,7 whatever in England, Italy, or what have you is the same as scoring 7,6,8 in J-League, A-League and MLS.

Let me put things into perspective using FC Porto as an example.

We have been the best Portuguese side for close to 30 years now, we´ve recently had great international victories and I believe that we are well respected and a bit feared (not pee in your pants fear, just be sure to be on your toes caution). And our status wasn´t achieved due to our domestic achievements.

The big boys in Europe don´t give a shit if we´ve won 11 of the last 15 portuguese championships. But our composure in Europe (and the talented players we´ve exported) is what makes us noticed.

So far what Benfica has done has been shit. Nobody is really paying any attention.

yes, Benfica have an 'all-star team' that could challenge for any title in Europe
with a jogo bonito midfield like that I daresay they could play a lot of top flight teams into the ground
each league has a world beating team or two, and Benfica are certainly one this year
the midtable argument breaks down with a win like that against Everton
in fact, I've been saying for years that the mid-table in the Prem remains very poor in terms of quality and money

I was impressed with the big win against everton, some really nice goals in there but having said that, everton have been pretty shit so far this season (ex: 6-1 demolition v. arsenal i think). Look here palerma, neither of the 3 teams have had the same opponents. Go bother someone else with your lampionice.

Anyone who wants to know the reason behind Porto's domestic success just needs to google: "fc porto corruption".

They have bought referees with prostitutes and money.
Their president has received a referee at his house the day before that same referee was suposed to referree a Porto game.
Their president likes to date prostitutes.
The best well known portuguese referee at the moment is Jorge Sousa, he was a member of Super Dragões, Porto's drug trafficking football firm.

In the last day of the portuguese Superliga, that same referee managed to red card Cardozo, Benfica's top striker, at half time after he was punched in the face by two Braga players and he also managed to left several hand balls by Braga go unnoticed, one of those was inside the penalty box.

In the meanwhile Porto has already had a handful of friendly referees and are still near the top after playing really weak football.

Benfica is just too good this year, it's the best team in the League by a mile, we play highly technical atacking football (as anyone who as seen the two games against Everton can confirm) and we'll still be champions this year, even if it means playing against the referees and the "ruling class" of portuguese football.

Proof asshole. Proof. Every court has dismissed every single case against Porto. Even CAS has considered the accusations utterly ridiculous.

AHAHAHAAHAHAHA... you're a pathetic little weasel aren't you?
PROOF? You want PROOF?

There's recorded phone calls all over the press that prove that referees were bought and paid for. Just because our corrupt judicial system considered those recordings not acceptable in court everyone knows the truth.

Your president admitted to have received a referee at his house, supposedly to give marriage counseling to that referees's father. I'M NOT JOKING EVERYONE, THEY ACTUALLY SAID THAT IN COURT!!!! HILARIOUS.

Carolina Salgado, Porto's President last sweetheart is a known prostitute.

And not everyone has dismissed the accusations, the Football League has punished you, it might have been a slap in the wrist (for much less Juventus and AC Milan were relegated) but we live in the butthole of the world, where corruption runs rampant and cheating does pay.

So enjoy you're tainted victories, I know the truth, AND YOU KNOW THE TRUTH AS WELL, you're just a typical Porto supporter, an unrepentant cheater, that gloats about victories that your team didn't won, they just paid for.

Just wanna ask...How is Javi Garcia doing?

Very well. He is one of the most important players in this team, cause he is the one who maintain the defensive balance of the team. The other 3 midfielders are Aimar, Di Maria the ofensive players and the Brazilien Ramires that helps Javi and the other two ofensive midfielders. Benfica have a centre back that atacks very often (David Luiz) and Javi was perfet securing that role when that happens.

Tactically Javi is a very intelligent player.

Benfica will miss him in the next two matches cause is suspended.

wong_ma
24-02-2010, 11:57 AM
Hope he does do well there.

Too bad his potential couldn't be fulfilled @ Real.

Did he have a buy back clause by any chance? I know its unrealistic that we would buy him back, since we bought Sergio Canales. I'm just interested since most of Real's cantera players that get sold off have buy back clauses and other random clauses.

sumaríssimo? Meaning?

casaubon

sumaríssimo? Meaning?

An immediate suspension for a foul occurring on the field that the ref hasn't noticed. Usually it's applied for players that elbow other players and get away with it. Porto players were famous for getting sumaríssimos, ie: Quaresma, McCarthy and Lisandro. Basically this measure was only applied to Porto players. And when Porto appealed the suspension was increased, go figure.

With Javi Garcia his sumaríssimo didn't come into effect immediately (Benfica couldn't afford to lose him for a few games). This is portuguese football...

This is Luisão kicking an opposing player:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_O8NEhbiXiI8/S4KX_aahQoI/AAAAAAAAEXc/A_dRsk4vUrg/slbxnacional-luisao2.jpg

The ref saw this and he gave him a YELLOW card, so according to the immediate suspension rules of the sumaríssimo nothing happened, by reason of the ref having seen it and taked "appropriate" disciplinary action.

Theres no buy back clause for Javi Garcia. Benfica pay 6,5 M to Real and now Javi have a clause of 30M. I think he could leave Benfica for 20/25M in the end of the season.

Javi have a 2 match ban for respond to an aggression of a Maritimo player.

I believe that Javi could easily be a substitute of Senna in Spanish NT

All shit aside, Benfica deserved to win it this year, played the best football. Who cares if they had a little outside help. Throw the dog a bone.

Now its going to be interesting to see how they go next season after the big clubs in Europe rape them for all their best players.

This has been happening to Porto for the last 15 years but we still come back and string 3, 4 or even 5 titles in a row. Thats the real challenge.

Dont come and talk about corruption either....is Porto paying UEFA referees too? Is that how we won the UEFA cup and Chaampions League? Pinto Da Costa's influence must be greater than i thought???

We'll have to wait and see.
I don't see Sporting as a threat, and I believe Braga will not manage to make this surprise again.
As for Porto, well you guys have a challenge too. Replace Jesualdo Ferreira won't be easy, and if Benfica manages to keep the quality with the new players, I believe the championship race will be up to the two teams :)

Dont come and talk about corruption either....is Porto paying UEFA referees too? Is that how we won the UEFA cup and Chaampions League? Pinto Da Costa's influence must be greater than i thought???

It may be, it may be not, there are no proofs. To be honest I do not believe that UEFA is full of saints. We can watch every year the biggest teams being benefited in Champion's league (specially against little teams like the Portuguese), and even in Euro and World Cups.

But I will never take the merit of your wins in 2003 and 2004, because you had a great team, and the best coach. I enjoyed watching every Porto game those years.

Although it's always discussable if you hadn't any help in the internal championship, those trophies would be harder. But I do not want to go that way, I just want you all to be a little ashamed and don't come whine and give a lot of crappy excuses when Benfica wins.

This coming from a club whose president was arrested "Vale e Azevedo" and whose current president was sentenced to 20 months in prison for theft - "Luis Filipe Vieira".

You are really comparing Vale e Azevedo? lol a guy who steals the club for his own pocket, and put it into misery for a lot of years. I am ashamed we had a president like that, and about LFV I don't see how can that excuse the fact Pinto da Costa payed prostitutes and Brazil travels to more than one referee..

casaubon
27-05-2010, 12:51 PM
Sure he did. Sure. Howard King ring a bell? You have a confession of a ref claiming that Benfica paid prostitutes so he'd help them in an UEFA match.

As for Porto paying prostitutes? Not one smidgen of proof. And the Calheiros case of the 90s was PROVEN to have been a clerical error. But you benfiquistas just cling on to that little bit of hope that we just might be corrupt, right?

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the bone. You really had to revel in shit to get it.

Vale e Azevedo is a product of the megalomaniacal attitude of Benfica and Benfica supporters. You truly deserved him. Ah, before Vale e Azevedo you already had the Operação Coração. You know, when Benfica was forced to ask for public handouts, begging on the street basically. And LFV is a convicted criminal so shut the fuck up when talking about FC Porto.

You sure are full of bullshit in your mouth casaubon. It's a shame, because it seems you have some intelligence in that head, but you're just blind by the Pope.

This is HILARIOUS. So the famous phone calls everyone heard at youtube, doesn't prove anything.. Sure, your president is a saint and an angel. If you really believe in that, then it's impossible for me to discuss ANYTHING with you. It will be like talking to a wall.
About Howard King, I will just say the same you said... PROVE IT...

No, Vale e Azevedo is a product of a corrupt country, full of opportunist people that don't have any morality or whatsoever. You just say it's a product of Benfica, because you hate us.. And you will keep hating as long as you keep bending your ass to your President, that year after year keeps inciting war against Lisbon.

And if LFV is a convicted criminal, then Pinto da Costa is one too, so shut the fuck up when talking about SL Benfica.

Fucking idiot :)

Get a life. Or learn how to read.

Nice argument :) rofl
You get a life, and learn to watch football without blue glasses

Thats not possible. Think about it.

I vote this thread gets deleted. Its a total waste of valuable internet space.

I say the same about all your posts :)

Grow up, or make a thread about your club, and whine all you want. Leave the others alone, and stop excusing the fact that Jesualdo Ferreira is a mediocre coach, and Benfica was way better this year :D

Just like Lost finale, you guys have to move on already

You really do need to learn to read properly. I didn't mention your posts at all. I was referring to this thread, which was not started by you.

I'm not that much of a wanker that i need to make a self congratulatory thread about my club. We win enough titles that i don't need to advertise the fact that we finally win something on internet boards.

If your scroll a bit further up, or summon up enough brain power to remember , you will see that i already admitted that Benfica were the best team this season. Your what's known as a bad winner. I guess your not used to the sensation, it happens pretty rarely for you.

Jesualdo may be a mediocre coach, but under his command Porto finished above Benfica every season apart from this last one. What does that say about Benfica?

Just like Lost finale, you guys have to move on already

Just like "Lost Finale" you make no sense. Stop embarrassing yourself.

I understood perfectly you were talking about the thread. I just said I felt the same about your posts, but more about casaubon lol

The thread was made BEFORE we win anything.. your point being...?

I'm not a bad winner, when Benfica wins, I do not care about other clubs, but there's always bad losers that can't keep their mouth shut, like you guys did on this thread :)

Jesualdo may be a mediocre coach, but under his command Porto finished above Benfica every season apart from this last one. What does that say about Benfica?

It says Benfica was totally shit the last years. Luis Filipe Vieira knows nothing of football, the last coach that I saw some potencial was Fernando Santos, and it was changed for Camacho.. I don't wanna talk about Quique at all, he just sucks.
You see, this is the difference. When Porto won the last years, Mourinho included, I can admit they were superior. I always found Jesualdo a mediocre coach because on the important games he keeps making up new tactics and get owned. He did almost the same points this year, that in the last 2. The big difference this year is that Braga and Benfica were a lot better.
You guys have the merit for the past titles, and even if we know Pinto da Costa was/is corrupt, I cannot take the merit of it, because you were better inside the field.

I'm only asking to all the non-Benfica fans to do the same, and get over the tunnels/hulk bullshit. Football is in general corrupt. Benfica did it in the past, Porto did it, heck even Sporting payed prostitutes to Howard King (his words). Some international referees said more than once that paying prostitutes to referee was a common act in some countries like Germany, Netherlands, etc.

Is it wrong? Yes very wrong.. but it's the way the human being works.. UEFA is not a saint, just like most of the country governments.

A football fan cannot be focused only on that this days, because that way we will always give excuses when the results don't satisfy us. We either watch the SPORT and ignore it, or we will be locked forever in those kinda irrelevant shit :\

Just like "Lost Finale" you make no sense. Stop embarrassing yourself.

Lost finale made sense, but only some could understand it :P

I am not embarrassing myself, and thank God you can at least give some arguments that we can both discuss, instead of the usual whining and insulting :) Congratulations for that

Maybe you should delete the Porto fans comments since the beggining of the thread then... The ones with insults in portuguese, and this wouldn't happen ;)

Just my opinion

was always going to be hard for our beloved benfica after the loss of players with who we grew, as a nation, to cherish and idolize as one.

bring on next season. the wrongs of this season cannot be undone, unfortunately, however there is still hope that justice shall be restored next season

A year later and Porto is still champion. The quality of our football was below par, we weren't as exciting as usual but the climb to the top was great.

Mid February we were 5 points behind Benfica and 3 games away from having to play on their ground. We arrived at their stadium on par and won the match placing ourselves 3 points clear. :D

We then won away to Braga in what was a very difficult match, so all in all when push came to shove we proved that we have the stuff champions are made of.

:D

Corruption lol this from a team who seems to always enter a game with the other teams best players on red cards from the week before...

Benfica fans talking about corruption is hilarious.
