England striker Wayne Rooney is alleged to have racked up £700,000 of gambling debts in a betting ring involving some of his international teammates.

The Manchester United striker, who earns a basic wage of £60,000 per week and has a host of sponsorship deals, is claimed to have accumulated the debt betting on other sports and football matches he wasn't involved in.

The betting ring is said to involve Michael Owen, John Terry, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand and it is claimed that the money has lead to ill-feeling between the players.

"The debts have caused a lot of friction between certain players as the betting started out as a bit of harmless fun run by Owen to pass the time but it has spiralled into something very serious," an England insider told the Sunday Mirror.

"Rooney being young and naive started with hundreds of pounds which soon became thousands of pounds and then became tens of thousands of pounds and by Christmas he realised he was in trouble and was being chased to settle his account."

The money was reportedly placed with a friend of Owen's, Stephen Smith, who runs the Goldchip private bookmakers.

Goldchip is said to have started legal proceedings to collect Rooney's debts and the Football Association has said that England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson will talk to the players involved.

"The FA is not aware of any problems in the England team dressing room due to issues surrounding gambling or anything else and under Sven Goran Eriksson the England team have enjoyed a fantastic spirit within the camp," FA spokesman Adrian Bevington said.

"We believe Sven will speak to the players allegedly involved to clarify the facts as it's important the fans know that everyone connected to the England team is determined to do all they can to achieve success in Germany."

The World Cup starts on June 9th, with England's first game against Paraguay on June 10th.

No smoke without fire. Not good for morale before the World Cup.

Again we see the british press trying to ruin the chances of winning a big title. So what if Rooney is a gambler??

The only reason why England haven't won anything lately is the media. And afterwards they try to blame the players. It makes me sick.

So what if Rooney is a gambler??

Indeed. Just the press reporting something that doesn't really matter. My only concern would be if the bailiffs came calling in the middle of a game!!

because they just want to make money, and even if England flop at the WC, they'll probably have as much press coverage of it as if they won

Pathetic attemp to deface Rooney, both by the press and this guy here who keeps on popping these kind of NEWS WITHOUT A SOURCE and then leaves so that we can critisize United and Co.

Doing a good job.

I guess Rooney stuck two fingers up to the press by almost beating Arsenal single-handed today.

And I'm looking forward to see the headlines tomorrow after Waynes display today. Wayne is probably the hero by the same people who just tried to hang him out to dry. Still..... It makes me sick.

they kill the morale of the country and ruin the team's confidence, then get on their backs about losing and wonder why its happening....scum indeed.

moron newspapers, indeed. they always have to dig some s-hit up against an England int'l. however, gambling could really affect a player personally when the timing is bad. but if they can't keep the two apart, i wouldn't feel sorry if they end up pumping gas after they retire.

I agree that the British press are no angels BUT (assuming the story is true) then Rooney should blame himself. What I'm saying is if he hadn't gambled then he would get any bad press. I'm not saying its his fault (he's still a young lad mind you) and (assuming the story is true again) the likes of Owen, Lampard etc. should have been more responsible with him. Its similar to the Sven-Arab saga. Yes what the press did was fcuk-ing unacceptable but if Sven wasn't interested there wouldn't be a story.
