The Player Review -

Juan Pablo Carrizo: Although he wasn't the star player of the game, he did some important saves and increased the level he had shown lately.

Federico Lussenhoff: Not exactly what I expected from him. He caused the penalty (although I still doubt he actually touched the ball), and seemed kind of slow. A great defender, but his lack of games this semester is noticeable.

Cristian Nasuti: He was part of the "Colorado" duo in the defense today (alongside Lussenhoff). I liked what I saw and I would continue giving him opportunities. Federico (Lussenhoff) wasn't very good today, and Gerlo has been a disaster the whole semester. I'd love to see Nasuti receive more minutes.

Augusto Fernandez: The right midfielder just keeps on getting better and better. He was the best player of the field, causing danger to the opposition everytime he had the ball. He's fast, he gives nice passes, has the ocassional juke, and scored our only goal. The goal itself was Augusto's "traditional" shot: strong and aimed towards the bottom. I've always liked this guy, and if I would have had the money, I would have invested it in him years ago. I see a great future ahead of him.

Sebastian Sciorilli: The 17 year old surprised everyone and made his debut today. He was, in my opinion, our second best player. He had some interesting things and gave nice centers. He should be a player to watch for.

Matias Abelairas: Just like Sciorilli, he was given a shot as a starter today. He started off well, but his level decreased as time passed. Still, he played a looot better than Zapata and may be a good option since Zapata probably won't continue playing for River and Sambueza is injured.

Fernando Belluschi: He entered in the second half and wasn't exactly the Belluschi from last semester. Even though he still isn't completely back, I think he did much better now and made an interesting partnership with Augusto Fernandez.

Marco Ruben: He let me down and disappeared in the second half. I would continue giving him opportunities, though.

C'mon RIVER!!! One day I will go see them, this is easiler than trying to find a torrent of their games!

I'm sorry to see River out of Copa Libertadores 2007. I hope they do better in the domestic season! River need to beat Boca eh?

River change their shirts/jerseys far too often!

Many thanks to the dude behind r-i-v-e-r.blogspot, I think this is the best way to keep up with River's games because there's no chance of them being shown in the UK.

River change their shirts/jerseys far too often!

They only change the alternative jerseys once a year. The home jerseys (the white ones with the red diagonal stripe) are changed every two years. Either way, I like this.. I like to see new designs and different jerseys, especially since I have a huge collection of River products. :)

Many thanks to the dude behind r-i-v-e-r.blogspot, I think this is the best way to keep up with River's games because there's no chance of them being shown in the UK.

No problem. I am glad to hear you like the blog: it is always good to read positive feedback and I love knowing that the time I put into the page actually pays off.

three names, one iron man in net
juan pablo carrizo
he saved us from what could have been a 0-4 in that first half and set up a second half where we could have even gotten a win
heart stopping stuff really..wish we could have taken it at the end there but it was really anyone's game
back and forth the whole second half too..they could barely move by the end
we didn't play well today like we haven't been playing well since february, but this point is a start
I'm not convinced playing a wing up front with a second striker and I think belluschi needs to be in the centre of the midfield

The Player Review -

Juan Pablo Carrizo: He continues proving why he's considered such a great goalkeeper. Today, he saved our team singlehandedly in the first half. He had several important saves, and if anybody else would have been in charge of our goal, I'm sure we would have received several goals. He has to be Argentina's goalkeeper for the Copa America.

Paulo Ferrari: Paulo looked completely lost out there today. His offensive level was equivalent or less than zero, and his defending was horrendous. It was a piece of cake for Boca's fowards and midfielders to get past him, and his prescense was only noticeable when he committed mistakes.

Federico Dominguez: He didn't have that bad of a game, but didn't have a good one either. In my last post I had stated that I was worried about our defense, and today's game proved exactly why I was frightened. You can't play two defenders who don't help in the back: it's either him or Ferrari. Passarella did something similar vs. Caracas (except that he put Villagra instead of Dominguez), and we all know what the outcome was.

Cristian Nasuti: Started off bad, just like our whole defense. They would leave open spaces towards the middle, on the sides, in the front: everywhere. In the second half he improved, and recuperated the ball many times.

Eduardo Tuzzio: Pretty much the same story as "el Colorado".

Fernando Belluschi: He's still not raising his level. I had gotten a little bit of faith last week, after I saw him play a few minutes vs. Belgrano, but his level of play was quite low once again today. In the second half he had a chance to give River the win, but missed it. Other than that, not much to say about Belluschi's match.

Mauro Rosales: The foward scored River's only goal. He has been doing pretty well since he arrived, but he still didn't look completely fit. Once he gets more playing time, though, I think he will be a very important figure for this team (at least if he continues playing like this).

Marco Ruben: I really liked what I saw from the ex-Rosario Central player today. He created a few good chances, and was unlucky not to score when the match was about to come to an end. I had said in the past that he could have a bright future ahead of him, and playing like this, and I don't see why not.

I loved this game........2nd half was especially exciting.Played with a good spirit, lots of strong, hard tackles and bucketloads of commitment. No fannying around, players just got up and got on with it.Very commendable.

As for the match.........Boca should have been out of sight by HT.Good goalkeeping and some poor finishing kept it tighter than it should have been.Super River comeback in the 2nd half with great chances for both sides for the winning goal.....particularly Palermo's headed chance near the end.

Very enjoyable, loads of talent on display, loads of heart and desire, when's the next game between these two?:p

Anyways, piss poor game by River in the first half, Boca could have been up 3-0 easily if it wasn't for Carrizo. The second half River raised their level a bit and Boca substantially lowered theirs, so I guess the 1-1 was an ok score. I guess the funnest part of the game was watching "la previa" with all those criminals of "La Doce" and "Los Borrachos del Tablón" stirring up trouble with the police.

Alright, it was a joy to watch and wel worth the wait. I thought both teams played very attractive attacking football and made for a game that i would rate at about 9/10. Anyway, Boca dominated hte first half and really should have put the game to bed before halftime but Roman, Rodri and Martin missed chances to do that. I don't htink Roman had a great game but he was nevertheless involved in most of hte play.

Ledesma played a great first half and scored a fantastic goal (the whole thing was a great move by Boca) but he started to give hte ball away too much in the second half, and actually it was his mistake that caused the River goal.

River upped the tempo in the second half and did so by trying to use their midfield 3 to close down Neri, Ledesma, Banega and Roman immediately as they got the ball. This worked well on Ledesma who looked tired in the second half. Also they managed to win the ball from Banega easily sometimes, but he just looked inexperienced. He'll be a very good player in the future but needs to learn crucially that great midfielders never give the ball away.

However, the man of hte match was El Cata! He was IMMENSE and absolutely everywhere River tried to go. Morel was also incredible but Cata was a massive rock, he and Morel were fantastic in the middle.

This guy is right.
His goal was a pretty easy one. Alejandro Alonso (un ex de Huracan) did everything, Cave just had to put the ball in the net. His first goal in the league was much better.
His assist was pretty good (that's not his first one btw). He didn't have the ball many times during the game but each time he managed to make the right move or the right pass. Solid performance and a nice ovation when he was substituted.
I think Cave will get more time on the pitch in the next weeks. I know I'm biased but Micoud's return isn't a big success, and Torito is able to play as a forward/playmaker. They play in a more simple way with Cave.
The french league is a very defensive league and Micoud is too slow to be able to create spaces. Cave, with his little deviations, his one-two..., has the technical arsenal to unsettle well organized defences. So if Bordeaux wants to be in the UCL next year, he's THE man!

You're right. It is often say that defensive players become attacking coachs. Well, that's not the case with Ricardo
Once again, the league is very defensive and most of the teams play with only one forward. That's the result of Aimé Jacquet's winning strategy during the WC98. And this strategy still seems to be the good one since Bordeaux was in the UCL this season :(
But I must say that on the last few weeks, Bordeaux has often play with 2 forwards (like yesterday).

But this isn't the right thread for talking about Bordeaux, just giving some news from the prodigal son. Will try to find some highlights...

Fernando Belluschi: Atletico Madrid still wants him, and now Napoli of Italy have added themselves to the list of clubs interested in the ex-Newell's player. In Italy they claim that when Aurelio de Laurentis, owner of the club, wants a player, he brings him. In Diego Maradona's ex-club, they assure that they will buy him if they managed to ascend to the Serie A.

Ernesto Farías: People close to the foward have said that his era in Núñez is close to coming to an end. He's been at the club for almost two and a half years now, and yet is still championship-less and with negative results that drop his market value and willingness to stay.

Juan Pablo Carrizo: Milan still wants him, and now a mysterious English club wants him: they say it's West Ham, Carlos Tevez's team.

Yes. They had also previously stated that River would go play a tournament in Korea against an Asian team, a European team, and an African team. They would get $400,000 (dollars) just for participating and $2,000,000 for winning it all.

It sucks, though. Everytime I hear about these rumours it gets me slightly pissed off, because I'm dieing to see River, and my only bit of hope is to have them come to Los Angeles over the summer. :( I can't believe they came three years in a row (2002, 2003, and 2004), but haven't come since then. Oh well.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good game by Marco Ruben, who scored both goals today in River's win by 2-0 over Rosario Central.

The Player Review -

Marco Ruben: Player of the game. Plain and simple. Had three shots in the entire match, and scored twice. The ex-Central player played like a real goleador, who may not appear all the time, but when he does is much more than dangerous.

Augusto Fernandez: Our other best player. If Ruben hadn't scored both goals, I would be announcing him as the Man of the Match. The youngster was fast, had nice passes, and was very important for River's win today.

Juan Pablo Carrizo: Didn't have much to do. There weren't that many clear shots by "los Canallas", but when they did attack, Carrizo made every River fan feel secure.

Cristian Nasuti: "El Tanito" did a good job once again. He is slowly gaining himself a spot in the first team and has been our most solid defender in the last few matches.

Cristian Villagra: The ex-Rosario Central player was expelled early on in the game. After 30 minutes, we were left with 10 players due to him getting two yellow cards.

Fernando Belluschi: Didn't have a great match, but was still important for us. He made several Central players get nervous and get yellow cards. He also recuperated several balls. Not great, but not bad either.

Mauro Rosales: Mauro continues looking like our best reinforcement for the season so far. He continues adding speed to our offense and basically served the goal for Ruben..

Actually, a win on Wednesday would put us 5 points away from league leaders San Lorenzo. In fact, we must face them in two weeks, which could reduce the difference even more. Either way, it's complicated, but never impossible: Estudiantes did it last year (but playing a lot better =\). Let's go step by step. First up, Colon de Santa Fe.

you're right! then it's not as impossible
I keep thinking that passarella was overreaching with this squad in playing the same side in both tournaments
we had an overconfidence at the beginning that was fragile enough to put us in our current situation
at this point we have everything to win and nothing to lose, so we should just start over and play on wednesday like it was the first game of the year
forget the 5 points and just play like you know how, kaiser

Here's a video of the fans I just made.. Everyone view it: :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6m51Y2rjCfg

Watch it there or on my blog (http://r-i-v-e-r.blogspot.com).

Anyway, Los Borrachos del Tablon are, as you know, River Plate's barra-brava/hooligans. They've been around for decades now, but the current leaders (Alan and Adrian) just barely assumed the role as leaders in 2001. Before that, there were others in charge, such as "El Turco del Oeste", and the stands were a different place. Many may say what they should all be kicked out, but the current Barra Brava is extremely important to the fans: not only do they put most of the flags, drums, flares, etc. that you see in the stadium, but they also add a sense of security. You always see the news, and they always tell you that "River fans are scared of them", that they "hurt innocent people", etc., etc. First off, let me tell you that this is not true. Sure, things aren't the same now since Adrian and Alan got in a fight (they got in an argument over money, and have since then been fighting to lead the crowd), but they still make River fans feel a lot more secure then before. Back in the day (80's and 90's), one would either not go watch a River game at home because of fear, or would attend but knowing that they'd have a great risk of getting hurt and robbed. Now, fans go a lot more safely. Adrian and Alan eliminated the robbers (yes, they've beat the shit out of thieves till they disappeared) and took away the drugs that would appear all over the stands. The stadium became a much more family-friendly enviroment. Why do you think River ticket sales increased so much this decade compared to previous ones?

Here are some personal opinions on the barra-brava's current situation, including mine and many others. (Click here) (http://r-i-v-e-r.blogspot.com/search/label/Los%20Borrachos%20del%20Tablon)

Of course, they do have their dark side. As I mentioned before, the two leaders got in an argument and have basically split the barra into two sides. There have been a few incidents, which caused the club to prohibit their entrance to the stadium, along with several other important figures of the barra. Other incidents involved the death of 2 Newell's fans a few years ago, when the two barras (River's and Newell's) crossed roads on a Sunday. They've also attacked the police (i.e. - Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2005 and Asuncion, Paraguay in 2006), but believe it or not, those acts were more justified.

River's hooligans are currently considered the most powerful and dangerous in not only Argentina and South America, but also in the World. It's not a coincidence that Pele warned FIFA before the World Cup to be careful with them, since the military police in Brazil, one of the strongest in the World according to "O Rey", could not handle them at all.

Los Borrachos del Tablon also are important in political campaigns, both at National and Club level. For the club elections, it is not unusual to see flags of a candidate in the middle of the stands during election time. Those candidates pay them, and are actually benefited a lot by the sponsoring. As for National campaigns for the Argentine Goverment (not soccer/football related), many Argentine barra-bravas are hired as security. They are sometimes payed as much as $40,000 dollars just to sponsor them and be their personal body guards.

Hmm.. What else can I add? Just tell me if there is something in specific that you'd like to know.

Thanks for stopping by! :)

I think it's the informal nature of their authority and international embarrassment that has Argentines taking a hard look into the barras bravas lately
of course they shouldn't exist in principle, but it's going to be difficult to just turn back so many years of organisation
I've only ever seen one game from there and it was back in 94 against banfield (I was 11) and it was fine, but I can still support the move to limit them

Are there any different opinions that you could link us too

Not really.. Just ask around. I've heard different opinions a million times and it's usually because the person is either uninformed, didn't know what the stadium was like in the past, or feed off the media. I don't have any of those opinions with me, but they are usually just "Oh, they bring violence and drugs to the stands" or "they make the stadium a dangerous place". Like I said before, that's how River's barra-brava was in the past, and maybe that's where these opinions originated.

Do you believe that barra-bravas of other clubs are good to teams (like La 12) or you're talking only about River?

I am not quite sure about the other barras. I don't know their history, I don't know how they are nowadays: I'm too uninformed on them, and I don't want to be ignorant and say incorrect things. There's a mini-documentary on the normal day of Rosario Central barra-brava members, but it's in Spanish. I'm not quite sure if you understand the language. If you, though, I'll send you the link soon.

Like I said earlier on, River's barra-brava isn't only good. They have their dark side and have had incidents in the past, including some deaths. The thing is, if you eliminate the current ones (like many people wish), nothing good is going to happen, it could only get worse. People think that if you kick out the current hooligans, that no violence would ever occur and that everyone would be happy. That's where they are wrong. It's like me saying "I don't like President Bush, let's kick him out". It doesn't work that way, because even if I did kick him out, somebody else would fill in his spot. Well, the same thing happens with the barra-bravas. Los Borrachos del Tablon, for example, have 500 members. Los Guerreros, Rosario Central's barra-brava, has about 1,000 people in it. What are you going to do, ban them all? Not only that, but trust me, there are a million fans who would love to take their role.

Anyway, my point is that there is a high possibility that of those thousands that want to be the boss in the crowd, a high number of them would bring back violence and drugs. LBDT add a sense of security for River Plate fans, especially away from home: when facing Nacional in Uruguay in 2003, the Nacional barra was waiting outside of the away stands to attack River fans. In 2005 in Bolivia, thousands of Oriente Petrolero fans started attacking our fans because River was winning 8-0 in the global score. In 2006 vs. Libertad, the Paraguayans were throwing bottles and rocks at the fans throughout the match. What would have happened to the innocent people in those situations without Los Borrachos? Who knows, but I doubt it would have been something good

The 6 persons were prohibited to enter the stadium on what reasons ?

Actually, vs. San Lorenzo last Sunday, there were atleast 12 members from LBDT who were prohibited from entering the stadium. This was due to the Alan and Adrian fight (the two leaders got in a dispute over money). They split their sides, and before a game in the Monumental they got in a big fight. This caused Aguilar (River's President) to have an actual reason to ban them, so he took action and has been prohibiting them, along with their main men, from going to River games this whole season.

I'm open to any more questions. :)

Juan Pablo Carrizo: Milan of Italy, as well as several English and Russian clubs, still want him. As soon as he gets his European passport, you can expect him to be on his way to the old continent.

Juan Marcelo Ojeda: Surprisingly, the ex-Rosario Central goalkeeper might leave. He has barely played one game this whole semester (vs. Colo Colo when River was already out of the Copa Libertadores).... and that is exactly why he wants to leave. If Carrizo's departure becomes a reality, Ojeda will become the new starter. If not, he prefers to leave and gain minutes in a different team. So far, there aren't any known clubs that are actually interested in him.

Fernando Belluschi: The business group that owns 60% of his transfer wants him to leave in June. Some Italian, Spanish, and Russian clubs want him, so he isn't expected to stay for too long.

Ariel Ortega: The main surprise of the day was Necaxa of Mexico's interest in "el burrito". Ariel loves River and has recently been gaining more minutes. The Mexicans want him on loan for a year, and he is willing to join them. Will he leave? :(

Paulo Ferrari: Sevilla of Spain, who won the UEFA Cup a few days ago, are interested in the ex-Rosario Central player. They've been wanting him since last year and this time it looks like he'll be on his way to Europe.

Rubens Sambueza: A Greek club, said to be AEK, have enquired about "canito"'s price. He hasn't gotten too many minutes, and was never able to live up to his hype, despite being at the club for years now. If the interest is firm, I don't see what will stop his transfer.

Augusto Fernandez: Some teams requested an asking price, but River would like to keep the youngster for atleast another year.

Marco Ruben: A $6,700,000 dollar offer from a Russian team is expected to arrive within the next few days. Of the $8,000,000 River paid for the Central trio (Villagra, Ojeda, and Ruben), approximately $4-4.5 million dollars were paid for the foward. He's been at the club for less than a semester, but the offer sounds tempting to some dirigentes. Does this mean the loss of yet another young talent?

Ernesto Farias: An unknown Mexican team is interested in him. Close friends of him have recently expressed his desire to migrate, so el Tecla, just like many other players, may be well on his way.

Raúl Bobadilla: A young foward from River's lower divisions, who has never played a match in our first division. 50% of his transfer was sold to Concordia Basel for $500,000 dollars.

Julio Cesar Caceres: The international Paraguayan defender played for River in 2006 on loan. Since then, Passarella has insisted that the club sign him, and has done it yet again. This year, he's been a starter for Tigres in every single match the Mexicans have played, so his arrival sounds complicated. Still, "los millonarios" will make an effort to bring him in on loan.

Walter Erviti: An Argentine midfielder who plays for Monterrey of Mexico, a club that was able to win the Mexican tournament with Passarella as coach. Since we have no solid left midfielder, and Zapata will be leaving (thank god!), "el Kaiser" has requested him.

Thanks for the links. AEK is supposed to be interested in Zapata too, but I don't think we need left midfielders. Also, I'm not a big fan of Zapata.
What's your opinion about Sambueza ?

About Ortega, I know he is a legend there, but he keeps having problems, leaving, then returning etc. I don't think he is able to help the team anymore.

Of course you don't want Zapata. He's arguably the worst player I've seen in my life. I've had to stand him for 7 years with River's jersey (since 1999, minus one year in which he went on loan), and I just hope that you don't have to do the same. Keep praying that he goes elsewhere.

As for Sambueza, he's a good player. He made a great appearance as a youngster in the Torneo de Verano a few years ago, and shined. He would do some nice jukes, and show lots of talent. Unfortunately, he was never able to live up to his hype, reason for which he hasn't been a starter for River. He has a very good shot accuracy (great free kicks), is fast, and has the ocassional juke, but is irregular at times. Not to mention how he has gotten several red cards in the few opportunities he received lately. We'll just have to wait and see how he does in another club: he has potential, but he just hasn't been able to show it.

About Ortega, I know he is a legend there, but he keeps having problems, leaving, then returning etc. I don't think he is able to help the team anymore.

I don't know, in the past he had said the worst decision he made in his life was to leave River in the past. Plus, he's recently been gaining minutes, and is doing good. If you watched the game vs. San Lorenzo on Sunday, you would have been able to see that he was the only good player we had on the field. Not that the others are bad, it's just that none of them (Carrizo being the exception) have been playing good. Ortega, on the other hand, has done well everytime he's received an opportunity. Anyway, back on subject: Necaxa's President mentioned that Ortega's incorporation is almost a reality now, while el burrito said that no doors are closed. Hopefully he stays.

Talking about idols, the possibility of Aimar returning is still alive, while new rumours have arisen: the return of Juan Pablo Sorin. It should be interesting to see how this works out, if it is that they return (remember, Gallardo, Salas, and Ortega all returned, but none filled up to their expectations).

In other news, River will play the Peace Cup in Korea this summer (July 2007). The tournament will consist of eight teams (4 Europeans, 2 from the American Continents -River being one of them-, 1 from Africa, and 1 Asian team). It should be an interesting tournament, not only for the diverse teams, but also financially: $450,000 dollars will be given to each participant, while the winner would keep $2,000,000.

Zapata is a hard working player who is consistently average. If your team is doing well you don't mind him, but if your fortunes turn for the worse he is easy to point the finger at. Sambueza always lacks that final step to hit it big and at this point I don't think it will happen for him with River. He is one of those players I think will have a breakout season when he leaves (see la gata) and for this reason I would prefer him to leave Argentina.
As for Ortega, I hate to admit it but it has all been a trick. Us fanatics get so emotional over seeing him that we forget it hasn't worked every time he does a double feint or puts in a great pass. It's a terribly disjointed team at the moment it's too bad for Ortega because you know he suffers because of this. Wouldn't be surprised to see him go again.
Do you have a source on Aimar? I just can't see it happening in the near future as he is seemingly happy at his new club and is set to return to European competition next season.

Well yes Ortega was good against Lorenzo, I actually watched the game. But I think River needs to get over him. I'm always of the opinion that teams are bigger than players. Even if they are legends. If he can be a part of the team without causing problems then yes he should stay. But I remember last year all the problems with him missing practices, then returning, then again missing practices etc.
From what I hear Belluschi isn't having a good Clausura, is it true ?

Isn't Aimar happy at Zaragoza ? They'll be playing at UEFA next year and they had a nice season up until now.

The Aimar thing appeared on Diario Cronica. He hasn't been doing too well in Europe lately, and D'Alessandro has been doing better. I am not saying it will happen, but if there is a slight chance, why not have hope?

As for the Sorin rumours, I can believe those more, since he was rumoured to return a few times now. Not only that, but his club isn't doing too good, and he hasn't been a starter all season, like he would be in River. Plus, he would be a good option as a left midfielder, since Zapata is leaving and Sambueza is irregular and might leave as well.

Here's a segment I made for my blog (http://r-i-v-e-r.blogspot.com).

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/locoxriver/106anos.jpg

Happy birthday to River Plate! Today, May 25, 2007, the club reaches its 106th anniversary, after being created on the same date in the year 1901.

In the clubs long history, there have been both glorious and poor moments. River fans of all ages have been able to live great times. From the great "la maquina" team in the 1940s -considered by many to be the best River team ever-, to the 1986 acquisitions of the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Intercontinental with historic legends, to the 1996-97 glorious reign of Ramon Diaz: the club has lived it all. Fantastic players, such as Norberto Alonso, Enzo Francescoli, Alfredo Di Stefano, Jose Moreno, Angel Labruna, Bernabe Ferreyra, Reinaldo Merlo, Ubaldo Fillol, the Onega brothers, Oscar Mas, Daniel Passarella, Pablo Aimar, Javier Saviola, Andres D'Alessandro, Ramon Diaz, Nery Pumpido, Javier Mascherano, Marcelo Salas, Esteban Cambiasso, Fernando Cavenaghi, Roberto Ayala, Juan Pablo Sorin, Ariel Ortega, Marcelo Gallardo, Luis "Lucho" Gonzalez, Leonardo Astrada, Martin Demichelis, etc, etc. have passed by the club. Many of them, in fact, came from River Plate's lower divisions.

"Los Millonarios", a nickname the team gained for buying players at worldwide record transfer fees in the 1930s, are one of the most important clubs in the world based on tournament wins. River Plate are currently the holders of the most Argentine league championship wins, 32, a total of 10 more than Boca Juniors, who have the second most. They are also the club to have won the most games and scored the most goals in the Argentine Premier Division in history. Another record held is three tri-champeonships in the league, something rarely done (for example, Boca have never been able to accomplish this task). As for international tournaments, the team doesn't have such a rich history, but still holds two Copa Libertadores (1986 & 1996), one Intercontinental Cup (1996), one Interamerican Cup (1987), and one Supercopa -the old Copa Sudamericana- (1997).

Just like every other football/soccer team, River have lived poor moments as well. Our current situation, is a sad, yet real example of this. Despite that, there have been even worse moments in the team's history. Even though I (fortunately) wasn't able to live it, the club lived 18 years (1957-1975) without winning a single title. I was often told how the team had great players and played great football, yet always ended up being runner-ups. Our current situation is nothing like that, since it's been just 3 years since we last won something, yet it is already miserable. Now imagine that with another 15 years attached to it!

Today is a day all River fans should celebrate. It's been 106 years, and that's not just a number: it's the creation of an unexplainable passion that's in our hearts. It's the beginning of the cause of all those nights in which we couldn't stop celebrating, and in other ocassions couldn't stop crying. Without River Plate, my life would be completely different, and I know many others feel the same. So today, let's forget about our poor present, of Passarella's errors, of Aguilar's corruptness. Today, we can all thank River for being in our lives. "Amen!"

Gimnasia (LP) - River: Preview Posted (http://r-i-v-e-r.blogspot.com)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steaua Bucarest is said to be preparing to offer $16,000,000 dollars for Fernando Belluschi's transfer. They are going to meet today with River's directives, and if they do make an offer rounding those numbers, it will be impossible for him to not migrate to Romania.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The teams and groups for the 2007 Peace Cup have been confirmed. They ended up including 4 European teams, 2 Asian Teams, and 2 American teams. River will be in Group B and will have to face Shizmu S-Pulse of Japan, Olympique Lyon of France, and Reading FC of England. The two groups will look as follows:

Group A
Bolton Wanderers(England)
Chivas Guadalajara (Mexico)
Seongnam (Korea)
Udinese (Italy)

Group B
Olympique Lyon (France)
Reading FC(England)
River Plate (Argentina)
Shimizu S-Pulse (Japan)

The winner of each group will face each other for the final match of the tournament. For more info, click here (http://r-i-v-e-r.blogspot.com/search/label/Friendly%20Matches).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

River Plate have agreed to loan out Rubens Sambueza to Pumas UNAM in exchange for $100,000 dollars. The Mexican side will have the option to buy "canito" for $1,000,000 once the 1 year deal is finalized. I have a feeling he will do great and will end up staying there.

But Sambueza isn't the only one that is being talked about in the Mexican transfer market. Ariel Ortega was wanted dearly by Necaxa, but "el burrito" decided to follow his heart more than the dollar bills. Ernesto Farias, meanwhile, is still wanted by Monterrey. The club is very interested in him, and River have already put up a price tag: 4-5 million dollars.

As for other players, Salzburg of Austria still want Danilo Gerlo and Lazio have been added to the clubs interested in Juan Pablo Carrizo. In fact, the Italians have already made a 5 million euro offer for the goalkeeper, but it was quickly rejected.

Ah, and how could we forget about our so-adored Victor Zapata? His agents were requesting $1,500,000 for him to stay. My ass! Bye bye Chapa! :)

06/06/07 -

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

06/06/07 -

Victor Zapata: It has been confirmed: the left wing will not stay in River. Ramon Diaz still wants him, so his possibilites of joining San Lorenzo in July are big.

Pitu Barrientos and Walter Erviti: They have been discarded for economic reasons.

Pablo Guiñazú: The player is willing to leave Libertad, but his transfer costs $1,500,000 dollars. The dirigentes offered the Paraguayans a list of players that could join them as part of the payment: Abelairas, Oyola, Fede Higuain, Toranzo, and San Martin. Still, other clubs, such as Gremio, Internacional of Brazil, and Velez, want him.

Patricio Toranzo: Sporting Lisboa are interested in the right wing and will intend to negociate a loan with River. This seems very likely, since the player is not in Passarella's plans.

Lucas Castroman: His name is once again going around in the halls of the Monumental. There are rumours of a possible trade for Diego Galvan.

Federico Lussenhoff: The defender's loan with River ends on June 30th, but his continuity at the club seems easy: he has his transfer in his hands (he used to be owned by Cruz Azul), so he will meet with River's dirigentes next week.

Ernesto Farias: Monterrey had put his transfer on standby upon hearing of River's request of $4,500,000 dollars for his sale. They decided to go after Humberto Suazo of Colo Colo, but have returned to el Tecla's waiting list after hearing that the Chileans want $7,000,000.

Oscar Ahumada: An anonymous Italian club is after the defensive midfielder. There are currently three other firm players in the team who play in his position (Ponzio, Lima, and Domingo), so his departure is not impossible.

Cristian Nasuti: The defender is in Colon de Santa Fe's list of possible incorporations for next semester. Leonardo Astrada, their current coach, has requested him.

After the latest news in the Ortega saga, I believe he is a big liability for the team. Idol or not you can't have him in any serious team.
Of course he is not the only problem of River or even the biggest one, but he keeps unsettling the whole team.

River

Maxi Lopez seems to be very close to rejoining River Plate. His loan with Mallorca is about to end, and he will return to Barcelona. The problem is, there isn't a shot in hell of him playing even a minute with Barca's jersey next semester. Therefore, the Spanish club is interested in loaning him out and giving him a better economic value in the future. So where does River come into this? Well, the club is looking for a foward (especially with the possible departure of Ernesto Farias), and Maxi is supposedly willing to return for a year.

What do I think? Well, to tell you the truth, I really don't know. :p I never really thought he was that great of a player, but I loved the "baile" he gave Boca upon entering the field for an injured Marcelo Salas in 2004. Unfortunately, the other image I have of him was when he missed the penalty vs. Boca that left us out of the Copa Libertadores that same year. Other than those two matches, he was never someone I liked that much.

Either way, I guess it wouldn't be that bad: he isn't a bad player and the club would be getting him for a very cheap price. My only problem with his arrival would be that the youngsters wouldn't get too many chances. Aside from that, we need a goleador, and that doesn't match Maxi Lopez's description (or pretty much any of our starting fowards').

I guess only time will tell if he returns or not.

To ease up the tension and be able to laugh for the first time this semester, I present you guys with a joke:

- No seño. Ahora que no hay nadie se lo puedo decir......
Mi viejo es José María Aguilar. Pero me daba vergüenza decirlo adelante de mis compañeros....

Have you read anything about Gallardo ?
The manager of PSG doesn't want him from what I heard and Gallardo is searching for a team

Leonardo Astrada, ex-River coach and player, is currently at Colon de Santa Fe and is interested in bringing in el Muneco as a reinforcement for next semester. We'll have to see, though, if Gallardo is willing to join the club and if the team is able to fulfill his economic needs.

06/21/07 -

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

06/21/07 -

Federico Lussenhoff: The defender has reached an agreement with River's directives and will stay on loan for yet another year. He will stop by Núñez and sign his contract next week.

José Sand: Lanus and Colon want him, but neither of the two have enough money. Veracruz of Mexico have offered $1,100,000 dollars for his transfer.

Victor Zapata: The left-winger, who owns 100% of his transfer rights, was requested by Ricardo LaVolpe. Velez's dirigentes contacted him immediately, and received a positive (in this case, negative) message: the player is willing to play at the club and even reached a verbal agreement .

Danilo Gerlo and Cristian Nasuti: A few unknown Mexican clubs are interested in the two River defenders.

Federico Higuaín and Marco Ruben: River gave a businessman the rights to negociate them. If sold, the two fowards would have the same destiny: Greece.

Ronald Raldes: The Bolivian central defender, currently preparing for the Copa America of Venezuela with his National Team, is planning on leaving Rosario Central. He is a possible reinforcement at the moment, especially with the possible sales of Gerlo and/or Nasuti.

Ernesto Farias: The ex-Estudiantes foward is once again rumoured to join a Mexican team. This time it wouldn't be Monterrey.

Oscar Ahumada: An Italian club is expected to make an offer for the defensive midfielder.

Is anyone willing to share positive (if any) and negative points of the last semester? I need some personal insights for my blog, and it would be great to hear some of your opinions. Feel free to get into as much detail as you'd like.

Thanks!

06/22/07 -

Diego Barrado: Se irá a prestamo a Colón o a México.

Juan Pablo Angel: Ingresarán 1.000.000 de dólares por el pase del delantero desde el Aston Villa al New York Red Bulls de la MLS.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

06/22/07 -

Jose Sand: Lanús was able to win the race to keep the foward. The agreement was for $1,000,000 dollars, which will be payed on July 1st.

Cristian Tula: San Lorenzo will pay the $500,000 necessary to keep the defender, as well as the $100,000 fine for using him vs. River in the Clausura.

Federico Domínguez and Diego Galván: San Lorenzo's directives inquired about the price tag of these two players.

Danilo Gerlo: Salzburg of Austria would be willing to pay $1,500,000 dollars for his transfer. Despite that, he has other options: clubs from Switzerland, Austria, Greece, and Turkey are interested in him.

Oscar Ahumada: The defensive midfielder wants to switch teams, and his representative, Néstor Sívori, brought in an interesting offer from an Italian club. It would be worth approximately $2,000,000 dollars.

Diego Barrado: He will be loaned out to a Mexican club or Colon.

Juan Pablo Angel: The club will receive $1,000,000 dollars for his transfer from Aston Villa to the New York Red Bulls of the MLS.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So we've already gotten rid of two of the biggest "muertos" I've EVER seen: Victor Zapata and Jose Sand. Meanwhile, Danilo Gerlo and Oscar Ahumada may also be on their way to different clubs.

Let's sum this up: exchange 4 muertos for approximately $4,500,000 dollars?! Sounds great to me! Now we just need to get rid of Cristian Villagra, and then we can start taking our championships more seriously.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

06/24/07 -

Joaquín Larrivey: River are planning on bringing in the "goleador" in case some of the current fowards are sold (see below). Larrivey is Huracan's current top-goal scorer with 19 goals in 39 games. He attracted several club's interests, due to his team's good campaign in the Second Division, and was eventually bought by Cagliari of Italy for $1,000,000 dollars. "How would he arrive at River if he was just barely sold?", you may be asking. Well, "los millonarios" are looking to request a 6 month/1 year loan, which would benefit both teams: River are looking for a foward, while Cagliari would benefit from a raise in his value. He could be a good option for now.

Marco Ruben: The dirigentes are looking to make a powerful transfer this semester, and the ex-Rosario Central player's price tag is the highest of our current fowards. Spartak Moscow would be willing to deposit $6,700,000 dollars in order to keep Ruben.

Oscar Ahumada: Atalanta of Italy have bought him for $2,000,000. This was a good sale, mainly because of our surplus of players in his position (Ponzio, Domingo, Lima, etc.).

Diego Galvan: He is wanted everywhere: San Lorenzo, Independiente, Velez, Olimpo, and a Mexican club are interested in incorporating the midfielder.

Andres D'Alessandro: No, before you get excited, he isn't returning to River. It's just that River will receive $150,000 euros because of his transfer to Zaragoza of Spain. In a way, this makes me angry because he was bought for just $3,000,000 euros. If you think about it, that is basically the same amount that we payed for the useless Cristian Villagra and Juan Marcelo Ojeda!

German Lux: Mallorca still haven't bought the goalkeeper, and his future is uncertain. I would love to have him stay, but with Daniel Passarella as coach it is nearly impssible. If he doesn't reach an agreement with the Spanish club, "el Poroto" may opt to join Independiente or Colon de Santa Fe.

Leandro Gracian: River Plate, Boca Juniors, and San Lorenzo are all interested in the ex-Velez Sarsfield playmaker. Despite that, he is just an option for now.

Ok, so now he have made 3 sales: Ahumada for 2 mill, Sand for 1 mill, Tula for 600,000. Add the percentages of Angel and D'Alessandro, and thats about $1,200,000. All together, thats $4,800,000 for players that aren't even that good. If Gerlo get's sold, we will have made about $6,500,000 for mediocre (or below mediocre) players. Not bad.... not bad at all.

07/06/07 -

Juan Pablo Carrizo: River's dirigentes an Carrizo's representative (Pablo Sabbag) will get together today to discuss Lazio's offer for the goalkeeper.

Nelson Rivas: The Colombian defender resigned his contract with River and reached an agreement with Bologna of Italy.

Federico Lussenhoff: The defender still has not signed his new loan. He is expected to do so soon, but if he doesn't, River will be left with few players in his position (Rivas left, Talamonti won't return from his loan, Gerlo has high chances of leaving, etc.)

Ernesto Farías: Since he cannot reach an agreement regarding his contract with Lorient of France, he is now also considering Toluca's offer. One thing is for sure: we're witnessing "el Tecla"'s final days with River.

Federico Higuaín: Estudiantes still want him (River requested $2,000,000 dollars). Abadie, their President, will visit "el Monumental" today to discuss this matter. Reggina of Italy also want him. Jose Maria Aguilar, meanwhile, asked Passarella to give him a shot with River's jersey in our coming pre-season friendlies.

Diego Galván: Another player that is being negociated with Estudiantes. River have lowered their demands to $700,000 dollars for 50% of the transfer.

Danilo Gerlo: Olympiakos of Greece is willing to pay $1,500,000 dollars for him. We own 50% of the defender.

Diego Barrado: Racing Club and Olimpo are interested in the midfielder. He is not needed/wanted in River, so his chances of leaving on loan once again are high.

Federico Domínguez: Julio Comparada, Presidente of Independiente, visited our stadium today to inquire about the defender.

Matías Oyola: Independiente, Banfield, Olimpo, and Tigre want him. Not only that, but a business group would be willing to buy him in exchange for $400,000 dollars.

Ricardo Villalba: The defender would leave to a Chilean team.

What is your opinion of Higuain ? Doesn't he deserve a chance?

He's a great player: he did very well in Nueva Chicago, and, if I am correct, he was their overall top goalscorer for the 2006/2007 season. Not only that, but he had always scored many goals in River's lower divisions. I cannot say if he is River quality or not, since some players are just not made for the club. Cristian Tula and Dario Conca are great examples of this. They both were key players for their clubs when on loan from River, but with us they ALWAYS failed to impress. The same might happen with Federico Higuain, but then again, it might not. I'd prefer to give him opportunities before selling him to Estudiantes or another club.

I like "el tecla", who is going to play in the offense next season ?

I am not quite sure if you are aware of this or not, but River have reached a $4,000,000 agreement with Toluca of Mexico. Without Farias, we will still have several options. Marco Ruben, Radamel Falcao Garcia, and Mauro Rosales are all great players who are ready to play in the first team at any given time. Besides these players, there is also Ariel Ortega, Federico Higuain, Andres Rios, Sebastian Sciorilli, and other fowards.

By the way, Diego Galvan was sold to Estudiantes ($700,000 for River, who own 50%), and Nelson Rivas actually ended up signing a contract with Inter of Italy!

soo...when will the clausura beginn? are there any promising players in your team that make it into the first team? I heard Diego Buenonotte (?) is pretty good.

The tournament begins on August 5th for us, when we will be facing Gimnasia de Jujuy in their home stadium. It will be a tough match: they've always been a complicated team, especially when playing in Jujuy.

As for young players making the first team, Matias Abelairas has already won himself the left-winger spot (atleast for now) and even scored a goal today vs. Reading (free kick). He had done well vs. Boca in the Apertura 2006, and received more minutes last semester and played great. He seems very promising and is, without a doubt, much, much, much better than Victor Zapata. :o

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-67SYSgQ4Q) is a video of the goal, by the way.

Other players? Well, for now not many seems to be assured a spot, but Sebastian Sciorilli is a great 17 year old playmaker/foward (can play either position), and Diego Buonanotte (playmaker) has often been praised by the press and River's staff. Besides them, you might want to check out San Roman, Mussachio, and Bogado (defenders), Burzac (playmaker), and Rios (foward).

I took a flag to the stadium (pictured) that stated "Guille amargo. No existis!". Upon the first "Guillermo!" yell I made, he waved, but then looked toward us and saw the River jerseys, read the flag, and heard the insults. His reaction was hilarious.. se queria matar!! Priceless. Anyway, he ended up laughing a bit, but it was just funny how he first thought that we were Boca fans praising him, when really it was the exact opposite. :P

After the first half, we got closer to Guille to insult him even more, and some Boca fans got pretty upset. Of course, they had to take care of it the Bostero way: coming up to you in larger groups and acting like tough guys. We were just two people, but they came up to us in a group of 6 or 7 people and threatened us by saying "Put that flag up one more time and we will break your head!", "Who are you calling 'puto'?!", etc. Nothing happened, since the security guard came to straighten things out, but I just thought that it was funny how they always try to act hardcore. No shit, it's easy to act tough when you are in groups that are 3-4 times the size of ours!

Overall, it was pretty fun. I never thought I would be able to insult Guillermo in real life. Not only was I able to do so, but I also attracted his attention. Good stuff.

Here are the highlights of River - Lyon:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD2CU7CiTHM

In other news, Sixto Peralta has joined the club. Are you kidding me?!? Fracasado en Racing, how the hell will he do good with River?! It's not like he's an 18 or 19 year old, who could still grow. He's 28: if he sucked 6 months ago, he'll suck now too! Hopefully he proves me wrong, but I just don't see it happening.

As for Roque Santa Cruz, he has European offers so he'll probably stay there, probably at Sevilla.

Well, I'm not a River fan but Farias is a very good player.
If he can adjust to the European style of football I believe he can be a very good addition to the squad. He didn't make it at his first attempt in Europe, but I think he can do it now.

Farías is a finisher, an area player, and a good one
he has a good strike rate but doesn't provide much football-wise besides his goals
I think he can do well for Porto and am excited to see him play with Lucho, Licha, Quaresma, & co

we got (Roly) Zarate to replace him (http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2007/08/01/01469118.html)
I never liked him, but the man does score goals

River
01-08-2007, 07:39 AM
Rolando Zarate? Meh.. He used to be a great player, but in the last year in Mexico he sucked completely and only scored one goal. He had also had a bad previous season with Velez. Besides that, he gets injured every other second. In fact, he's worse than Marcelo Salas when it comes to injuries! :D

Seriously, though, if he returns to his oldself again then he would be a great acquisition. He would score ALL the time, and had some perfect freekicks. He could be the goleador that we've been looking for for a while now. This may sound great, but I am not too excited for now: like I said, he's been doing bad for about 2 years now, and has been inactive most of the time due to injuries.

Other reinforcements? Well, the only one we have for now is Sixto Peralta, who also is pretty much useless (even more useless than Rolando, I believe). Who else? Humberto Mendoza, a Colombian defender who plays for Nacional de Medellin, is close to joining the squad on loan for a season. Nicolas Sanchez (Nueva Chicago) could be another option for the defense.

list of notable players from our youth system that we have sold in the last decade
Almeyda, Ortega, Crespo, Gallardo, Solari, Lombardi, Aimar, Guillermo Pereyra, Costanzo, Damián Alvarez, Saviola, Garcé, Dalessandro, Menseguez, Gabriel Pereyra, Cavenaghi, Ludueña, Demichelis, Maxi López, Ferreyra, Gastón Fernández, Mascherano. Sand, Mareque, Méndez, Gonzalo Higuaín, Sambueza, Carrizo.

the transfers amount to about 150,000,000 U$D

list of notable players that passed through our team that we then sold for an average of 3x more
Amato, Roberto Ayala, Juan Gómez, Cruz, Salas, Sorín, Celso Ayala, Gancedo, Berizzo, Bonanno, Burgos, Placente , Cardetti, Angel, Yepes, Ledesma, Lequi, Alejandro Domínguez, Luis González, Jonathan Santana, Leandro Fernández y Farías
the transfers amount to about 250,000,000 U$D

you talk about bad business, we are struggling economically as well as futbolistically despite all this
the article goes into more depth about a variety of other issues as well, but paints a dark picture of the next semester

River

River Plate have officially announced the arrival of Rolando "Roly" Zarate, on loan for one year with a buying clause of $1,000,000. Although he is yet to pass the medical exams, he is pretty much with one foot in the Monumental. Now, "is this good or bad?", you may be asking. It all depends on the way you look at it: Rolando, brother of U-20 World Cup champion Mauro Zarate, has had a fantastic career, having won two Argentine titles with Velez as well as being the top goalscorer of the 2004 Clausura, and the runner-up of the 2004 Aperutra. Besides those accomplishments, Zarate has even managed to play a few matches for Real Madrid and the Argentine National Team.

Although it may sound as if we managed to make the incorporation of the year, el "Roly" hasn't been doing well as of late. In the last two years, he has been cursed with poor football and endless injuries. In fact, he only managed to score one goal in seventeen games in his last season in the Mexican league! Not only that, but his injuries have caused him to step aside for large parts of the season and not play (his last game was over 140 days ago). Either way, he is only 28 years old and has enough time to revert the situation and return to his oldself again. I wouldn't say he was the player I was waiting for us to bring in, but we could really use the old Zarate (if he ever does return).

Besides Sixto Peralta and Rolando Zarate, River are close to incorporating Nicolas Sanchez -a 21 year old central defender who plays for Nueva Chicago. Daniel Passarella has requested two players in that position, one which would be Sanchez and the other either Humberto Mendoza or Ronald Raldes. The Bolivian's (Raldes) arrival would be complicated, while Mendoza would be more accesible. Humberto is a Colombian defender, currently playing for Atletico Nacional, who has made 10 appearances for his National Team. Upon being reminded of Nelson Rivas' short period at River, the 22-year old replied that he is confident that we will have a more successful cycle if he actually does end up arriving.

We may also bring in 18-year old Chilean foward Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez may be young, but he isn't just anyone: the youngster is one of the most promising players in South America and already has 2 titles being a starter for Colo Colo. He has been a vital part of the U-20 Chilean National Team, and has even played some matches for the top National Team. With speed, precision, and talent, he could be exactly what River is looking for. So where would we get the money to bring in this spectacular player? Well, that's the tricky part. Although there are some good chances of having him join the squad, he wouldn't become an actual River player: he would arrive on loan from Udinense, who are looking to raise his value as well as give him minutes to grow. Although nothing is confirmed yet, Sanchez and his representative have expressed their desire to locate the player in River. In my opinion, this would be the best incorporation we could make this offseason.

Nooooo! They suspended River-Newell's, which will be moved to an unknown date. This is unbelievable (..and not in a good way!).

They claim that it is because of fear of a new incident between LBDT. Now, tell me: if they are planning to kill someone in the Monumental on a match date, don't you think they would do it some other day as well? It's not like they can't wait another week. The only solution would be to add more police, not postponing the match!!

Great, now I have to wait yet another week to see River play. Besides that, we are going to have a really jammed schedule in the future, due to the Copa Sudamericana, Apertura 07, and the two suspended matches.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After weeks of negative news, some good news has finally appeared in sight: Rodrigo Archubi (left midfielder) and Alexis Sanchez (foward) will join River Plate in our quest to conquer at least one tournament in the coming season.

Both are very interesting players, and may play a key role in the team's performance. Archubi plays on the left side, a position in which we lack players, and runs up and down throughout the match. He was very important for Lanus, as well as the Argentine U-20 side, in which he won a Youth World Cup. Luckily for us, he got in an argument with Lanus' coach, making his transfer much more accessible. In fact, the club's dirigentes did not let him go easily, and barely accepted to sell him upon seeing the 3 million euro offer a few businessmen did on behalf of River. Still, we won't have the federative rights for Rodrigo, since the businessmen are only loaning him to us, though we will have an option to buy 50% of his transfer after a year.

As for Alexis Sanchez, he is a great foward with plenty of future ahead of him. At only 18 years of age, he has won more tournaments than River has in the last three years! He is quick, talented, and with plenty of potential. It isn't a coincidence that Udinese quickly spotted him and purchased him over a year ago. Despite that, the Italians want him to gain more experience and would like to recuperate a bit of the cash they invested on him. This is the exact reason for which he will arrive at River only on loan. Either way he will still be one of the best incorporations of any Argentine team in this pre-season.

One thing that worries me is that we do not have a classical #9, the type that scores EVERY single shot he gets. For now, these are our fowards:

- Marco Ruben: The player with most chances of being our top goalscorer. Despite that, he hasn't scored too many goals since he arrived at the club in January.
- Mauro Rosales: The ex-Newell's Old Boys player is great and changes the teams game tremendously, but he isn't the goleador type of foward.
- Ariel Ortega: "El Burrito" is pretty much in the same situation as Mauro Rosales.
- Alexis Sanchez: The Chilean is similar to Rosales and Ortega in the goal aspect. Who knows, he could cause a surprise, though: he scored 3 goals vs. Caracas in the Copa Libertadores 2007, the same team that eliminated us in the group stage!
- Radamel Falcao Garcia: The Colombian promised to take care of our goal-needing offense when he first debuted, but was never able to get his swagger back after his injury. Ever since he came back, he misses even the easiest goals.
- Rolando Zarate: The 29 year old used to be the exact definition of a "goaleador", but was punished with injuries and loss of gameplay. For now he doesn't excite me too much, but we will have to wait and see how he evolves.
- Federico Higuain: Gonzalo's older brother had been on loan with Nueva Chicago for the last 2 years and scored plenty of goals. Still, Daniel Passarella doesn't seem to like him too much, making it is very likely that he won't receive too many chances.

Behind all these fowards we also have several promising youngsters such as Andres Rios and Sebastian Sciorilli. For now our offense, despite lacking usual goal scorers, looks very promising. I do not want to get as excited as last pre-season (..we all know how that ended), but the team does look a bit better than previously. Hopefully the players will be able to reincarnate my hopes.

Here's what I wrote in my blog:

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/locoxriver/passa-aguilar-quote2.jpg

I must be a big fool to have fallen in Aguilar's trap. Just two days ago, I was celebrating the arrivals of Alexis Sanchez and Rodrigo Archubi, but I really shouldn't have expected things to last that long. Already three weeks into the Argentine Apertura, we are on the merge of losing three players: one defender, one midfielder, and one foward.

The truth is, we already lost two of them. The midfielder was Rodrigo Archubi. Although we did not sell him, it ends up that he actually had never signed a contract with River, despite basically being our player, and received a better offer from Olympiakos. It isn't a surprise that he decided to opt for the Greek team. The foward, meanwhile, is Federico Higuain, Gonzalo's older brother. He was sold to Besiktas of Turkey for $1,650,000 dollars. Higuain, who had arrived at 10 years of age at the club, was behind all the other fowards on River's list, so he chose to move to Europe.

The other player we may lose is Cristian Nasuti. Yes, when the club's dirigentes and coaching staff protest about the lack of central midfielders, they let their greed for money take over the team's ambitions of actually competing to win a title. Upon hearing of Olympiakos interest in "el Colorado", Aguilar instantly put on his guilty smile and decided to negociate with the Greeks. Archubi's new team is willing to offer 1.5 million euros for Nasuti, which, truth be told, isn't much.. especially considering that we only own 50% of his transfer.

At River there is no such thing as tranquility now-a-days. If it's not the internal barra-brava problems, it's Aguilar selling our players and hopes of winning something. If it's neither of those two things, it's our matches being suspended. The list can go on with infinite reasons of why our "fantastic institution", as Aguilar calls it, is being torn down in flames. The only cure will be to win a tournament this time around, but will it ever be possible with this President?

Good news for you River. It seems the Nasuti deal has been canceled. Greek media said that although there was an agreement between River and Olympiakos, the people of the Millonarios decided to ask more money (something around 300k Euros). There are rumors that this happened because they are unhappy they lost Archubi from Olympiakos and this something like a revenge.
Today will be the crucial day for the deal.

Welcome to the world of River Plate. According to your statement, EVERYDAY is a "pretty sad day for football" under Aguilar's management.

:(

As for our team, I am anxiously awaiting our match vs. San Lorenzo. 2+ months without River is waaaaaay too much!

The smile on Fernando Belluschi's face says it all: River finally returned to the win, and in a convincing way while at it! With some great performances, "la Banda" managed to outplay Estudiantes and deservedly keep the three points for the first time in the tournament.

The match started with an unpleasant surprise that seemed to foreshadow a future similar to a disappointing past. Barely two minutes into the match, Leandro Benitez put the "Pincharatas" up with an exquisite header. River did not take long to react, though, and put the score back on term just four minutes later, thanks to a potential shot taken by Fernando Belluschi. But Belluschi's good game wasn't over just yet: at the 23rd minute of the first half, Fernando assisted Marco Ruben, who was finally able to score this season. With River showing a good display of football, the team had a few more opportunities to enlarge the goal difference between the two, but did not manage to put the ball past the net.

At the beginning of the second half, River was not showing the same positive display. Despite not playing well either, Estudiantes were able to attain more possession and had a few good chances. To make things worse, Fernando Belluschi was expelled at the 32nd minute due to going in with a dangerous sliding tackle. Not much long after, the Uruguayan Salgueiro tied the match. With less than ten minutes left, everything seemed to indicate that the game would finish in a 2-2 draw, leaving River with barely three points and far from the top of the rankings. Fortunately for us, that wasn't the end of the story. Alexis Sanchez, arguably our best incorporation this season, was able to enter the field and put on the superhero costume. With constant pressure, the Chilean foward managed to steal the ball from an Estudiantes defender and easily put it past Mariano Andujar (Estudiantes' goalkeeper). Sanchez also assisted Radamel Falcao in the 92nd minute, in what was the goal of the week.

The Player Review -
Juan Marcelo Ojeda: The ex-Rosario Central goalkeeper might have not been as great as in the last two matches, but he did not do bad either. In fact, both of Estudiantes' goals were fantastic and impossible for him to stop. One thing I noticed from him, though, is that he seems to have "butterfingers". Since his debut for River, I've been noticing that he stops shots very well but doesn't seem to actually sustain the ball. Still, Ojeda's image has been much more positive than negative so far. One important thing: Juan Pablo Carrizo is rumoured to return to River for 6 more months due to Lazio's failure to make the first payment. If he does return, Ojeda's regularity will be postponed till next season.
Paulo Ferrari: The new team capitan played an average game. He contributed to the team with his speed, but still didn't do anything too great. Better regular than bad, right?
Nicolas Sanchez: Very similar to Ferrari. An average game for Sanchez, who improved after a few bad performances.
Cristian Nasuti: El "Tano" did a good job before being substituted during half-time. After a long time out due to injuries, Nasuti returned and convinced more than Eduardo Tuzzio. Will he start again on Sunday?
Cristian Villagra: *Sighs*. I thought Cristian was finally putting on a decent performance, but he still failed to impress me. In fact, he committed an error during Estudiantes' second goal. It wasn't directly his fault, but if we would have ended up tieing 2-2, I'd be ready to chop his head off right now! Seriously, though: don't we have any left-backs in our lower divisions?
Fernando Belluschi: I was surprised to see Belluschi's good level of play today. Today's game was the closest he's gotten to his old form for a long time. Besides the goal (1-1) and the assist (2-1), he ran around the whole field and was very active. It was disappointing to see him get expelled after such a good performance. According to the TyC Sports commentators, he only deserved a yellow card. Depending at the way you look at it, it could have been the correct or incorrect decision. No matter if it's right or wrong, Belluschi will miss out on Sunday's game vs. Racing.
Oscar Ahumada: I did not like Ahumada too much today. One negative point was the he intentionally hit an Estudiantes players in our area during a corner kick in favor of the opposition. Luckily the ref did not see it, else we would have been left with 9 players and a penalty against us. In other words, with better vision by the refferree, we could have lost the game due to Ahumada's stupidity.
Augusto Fernandez: The youngster, made in River's lower divisions, did a fine job (as usual). His speed and jukes contributed a lot to the team, and completed a good performance with a very offensive midfield (Ariel Ortega and Fernando Belluschi alongside). Much of the fourth goal was thanks to him, after making a good play with Lima and eventually passing it to Alexis Sanchez.
Ariel Ortega: El "Burrito" might have not played as well as in the other matches, but he is still an important part of the team. He gave a few good passes today, but his tiredness from the long series of games was more than obvious.
Marco Ruben: The ex-Rosario Central striker improved today. He seemed to be more active and actually looked for the ball a lot more. This may be the reason he finally was able to score (with an excellent header). Still not perfect, but an improvement nonetheless.
Radamel Falcao Garcia: The Colombian did not have a very good match, but he still put the ball through the net. I am very impressed by him physically. Am I the only one to notice that he always runs around and apparently never gets tired?!?
The Substitutes -
Federico Lussenhoff: El "Colorado" entered during half-time to substitute Cristian Nasuti. This substitution was only made for precaution, since Nasuti had been inactive for a long time now. Either way, both players delivered a good performance.
Alexis Sanchez: The Chilean did a fantastic job and scored one goal (3-2) and assisted another (4-2). Unlike vs. San Martin (SJ), Alexis seemed to have a good connection with his teammates. His constant pressure and willingness to recuperate the ball help out tremendously (just look at how his first goal for River was made!). Next to Belluschi, I think Sanchez was the man of the match.
Rene Lima: Rene came in towards the end of the game to help defensively, but he actually contributed to scoring the fourth goal! The defensive midfielder impresses everytime he comes in, and could have an important future with "la banda".

On Sunday we will face Racing Club, who's football has been going uphill lately. Will we be able to conquer a new win? Only time will tell.

I heard it was due to the fact that he doesn't have his italian passport yet (source (http://www.lanacion.com.ar/deportiva/nota.asp?nota_id=939239&origen=relacionadas)).

That was another reason (because Lazio still didn't pay a single penny). The reason they are loaning him to River instead of another team (such as Zaragoza or Real Santander) is a way of thanking River for the payment due-date extention. Either way, he's ours (http://r-i-v-e-r.blogspot.com)... which is a good thing.

The loan could be extended to 12 months if he doesn't get his European passport by January.

He's not injured (well, not anymore) but he doesn't play (still, he was on the bench). The word is that he's not yet fit. But at the same time he's playing with the reserve team and does score and make assists. Just hope Laurent Blanc (the new coach) will give him the chance he deserves very soon.

And you will be pleased to know that yesterday during the match against Monaco, the Bordeos' fans asked for Cave to come in (but it didn't happen :( ). It's only a matter of time now...

Oh my what a game by Belluschi, after a horrendous Clausura it seems he found his form back. Think he's gonna play for a European topclub next season, although he must cost a lot, Aguilar seems to be keen of selling so that wouldn't be much of a problem.

Augusto Fernandez is topnotch as well, I'm not suprised that he is linked to Real Madrid.

@minimalny: well there wasn't much honor playing against this Belluschi, he was outstanding. And after Sena got red-carded, River played it professional, 11 to 10 men, tearing them down.
As for Velez, I think a part of the problem is that you're missing Escudero. He's always in for a threat, I'm really suprised he's is still playing for Velez though.

River will be playing Lanus on Sunday, flying to Rio on Monday, and playing Botafogo for the Sudamericana on Tuesday.. Can someone tell me how the hell our players will be able to play again the next weekend vs. Tigre? Not to mention that we've been playing like 30 games a week for the last 3 weeks.

With Ferrari, Augusto Fernandez, Ahumada, and Ruben all feeling the effects of the long series of matches, and Rosales and Ortega recuperating from injuries, I wouldn't be surprised to see some more serious injuries coming in soon. :(

Edit: Well, both SoccerTV and Ole changed their statements in today's edition. The first match will actually be played on Wednesday. This additional day of rest obviously does help, but there is no doubt that the players will still be extremely exhausted. The second one, on the other hand, will be played on Thursday, September 27, meaning that there will be no break from the in-week matches till after the Superclasico vs. Boca.

the ones where you ask and they respond 'river....y ferro' or internationals who say 'river....y u de chile'
boca had a difficult time in the 90s, we have one now but we have a better youth program..we just need aguilar to f$%k off and lock the revolving door

It was a pretty intense game, big props for the comeback. But ... don't lose perspective of the real level of the rival, how chaotic River looked and ... never mind, no need to talk about Amarilla.

What is the most remarkable thing is that 90% of the stadium was destroying the team, Passarella and Aguilar with 19 minutes to go. El aguante was only sparked with the late goals added to the fear and lack of quality that Botafogo showed.

But no one will take away the final result and joy of the River fans. Finally something to feel proud of! Imagine if that was the Final and not a Round of 16 game! ...

well, if he's done one thing right lately, Passarella has injected a strong self-belief into the team that allows for comebacks like the ones we've seen recently
this concentrated energy needs to be fashioned into a big win like the one we had over boca exactly a year ago, but more importantly into consistent dominating and winning play
right now the energy is positive, if a bit fragile and misguided
I think we'll win next weekend and hopefully build on that

Aguante River!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Oooole, ooooole, oooooole, ooooole!!". The night finished off with River fans chanting and celebrating of joy. The ball, which went from River player to River player, could not be acquired by Boca Juniors, who were struggling in a day filled with fantastic football and passion displayed by the red-and-white side.
From the beginning, River Plate were clearly the better side. The "Millonaires" were able to open up the match with a powerful left-footed shot by Radamel Falcao Garcia. The difference was extended 10 minutes later, when Diego Buoanotte was fouled in Boca's area, leaving Ariel Ortega with a penalty which he later exchanged for a goal. During injury time of the first half, Ever Banega of Boca Juniors was given a second yellow card due to a very hard foul on Paulo Ferrari. After this, the match seemed like a free training ground for River players.

In the second half, River continued having opportunities but failed to conquer them. Either way, with a partial 2-0 score in our favor, the team didn't seem to be looking for a goal as much as before. They were more dedicated to the constant passing, the jukes (mainly coming from Ortega), and the embarrassment they made of the bosteros. The match eventually ended, leaving all River fans happy, though the score could have been maximized with a little more effort.

The Player Review -
Juan Pablo Carrizo: Not much for Carrizo to do but just sit back, relax, and enjoy the spectacle. Boca probably had one or two shots in the whole game, but even those weren't dangerous. Either way, we give two thumbs up to our starting keeper.
Paulo Ferrari: Although he wasn't too noticeable, he did a good job containing Rodrigo Palacio. He also had an important play which favored River throughout the match: with his speed, he managed to start a fast counterattack which resulted in a foul by Banega. The defensive midfielder was then expelled, leaving "la Banda" with an easy game thereafter.
Eduardo Tuzzio: Very firm in the back, like usual. With his never ending clearing and recuperations, he was one of the best defenders of the day.
Nicolas Sanchez: The ex-Nueva Chicago player had a good game and formed part of our solid defense, something that had been missing for quite a while lately.
Leonardo Ponzio: I was surprised to see him be a starter today, but I was even more surprised to see him play a great match. He may have not been accurate with his shots, but he defended very well and never stopped recuperating the ball. He ended up playing on the left side, and was much more solid than Cristian Villagra.
Augusto Fernandez: The youngster was one of the worst on the field, but this doesn't matter much: even then, it means that he wasn't as great as the other players but still did well. He gave some very good passes, such as the play in which he switched the ball to Fernando Belluschi (this led to our first goal).
Oscar Ahumada: Decent job by the #5. Not bad, not great: just fine.
Fernando Belluschi: Nice assist to Falcao on the first goal, and a very good game after that.
Diego Buonanotte: "El Enano" (the dwarf) continued bringing his magic to the pitch and received a standing ovation upon being replaced towards the end of the match. Besides, creating the second goal (he was the player who was fouled on the penalty), he participated a lot in the match and threw a few jukes here and there. He was fouled very often by Boca's players, who could not contain his fire. Having already proved himself in the few opportunities he has received lately, will he continue playing in the near future?
Ariel Ortega: "El Burrito" was simply the man of the match. One goal (the penalty shot), several great passes, humiliation of the "Bosteros": Ortega did it all. In his first Superclasico since his return to River, the ex-Argentine International proved that he is one of the best players in the league. He never stopped juking and was more than successful at it. 5/5 stars. Oooooorteeeeega, Oooooorteeeeega!!
Radamel Falcao Garcia: The Colombian seems to have opened up the goal to himself after scoring vs. Botafogo: in the last 3 games he played, he scored 5 goals. Falcao does not stop impressing and will be a vital part of this team if he continues to keep his form up. Let's just hope he doesn't get injured while playing for the Colombian National Team, though.
The Substitutes -
Matias Abelairas: Besides a few things every now and then, Abelairas was unable to leave his mark in one of the most important matches of the year. No negative points, especially since he came in during a moment of relaxtion and complete control for River, but not too many positives either.
Andres Rios and Mauro Rosales: Both fowards came in during the final minutes of the match and did not have time to show off their potential.

With the South American World Cup Qualifiers coming up, River will be able to rest for the next two weeks. We will return to the pitch vs. Gimnasia de La Plata, who will be arriving from a 1-1 tie with defending champions San Lorenzo.

Aguante River.. Gracias por esta alegria!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well Deportivo La Coruña have added themselves to the long list of Augusto Fernandez-wanting teams (Real Madrid, Barcelona, Villarreal, Juventus, Lazio, etc.). Add that to the possible departures of Falcao (rumoured to possibly go to the EPL), Fernando Belluschi (always wanted during each transfer window), and Juan Pablo Carrizo (scheduled to return to Lazio).

This is sad because River finally started playing well after a loooong while. If we maintain this team we could actually fight for championships and start winning things. Unfortunately, it seems as if Aguilar & Co. are at it again. I am not a fortune teller, but everything seems to indicate that the following things have a good possibility of happening in December:

- River will lose their "goleador". It had been since the Cavenaghi days that we needed one of these. Someone finally stepped up, and his name is Radamel Falcao Garcia. It would actually be more surprising to see him stay than leave. Our search for a top-scorer will have to begin once again.
- River will lose two right-wings. Augusto Fernandez is currently playing on the right, and Fernando Belluschi on the left side. When Fernandez doesn't start, Belluschi moves back to his original position. With both of them possibly leaving, who will play on the right side (let's see if anyone can actually come up with a decent answer).
- River will lose their starting goalkeeper. Juan Pablo Carrizo's loan will end and he will return to Lazio. Juan Marcelo Ojeda proved to be a good goalkeeper, but after being inactive for months, will he be able to recuperate his form?

None of these players are guaranteed to leave, but can we really expect them to stay? Besides them, other unmentioned players could be on their way out: Nicolas Sanchez and Oscar Ahumada were wanted in Italy, Cristian Nasuti could leave in exchange for minutes at another club, etc.

I didn't want to break the ice, but in the middle of our good moments nightmares have begun to creep into my mind once again.

River Plate tied 0-0 to an almost unnoticeable Arsenal last night. Unfortunately, the match went on to be defined in a penalty shoot-out, where the away side were able to find the difference over "Los Millonarios" and proceed to the final.

Arsenal went out from the first minute looking for a 0-0 result. With 10 men defending every ball played, things were made difficult for River, who were not able to reach Cuenca's goal too often in the first 45 minutes. In the second half, "la Banda" improved a bit and deserved atleast one goal. Still, Mario Cuenca's espectacular night caused the match to finish the same way it had started. Arsenal then won 4-2 in penalties, leaving River with another trophy-less season.

The Player Review -

Juan Pablo Carrizo: Our goalkeeper did not have much to do throughout the entire 90 minutes played. In the penalty shootout, though, he resurrected River by stopping Andrizzi's shot and partially tieing it. Unfortunately this didn't have too much importance later, since we lost, but Carrizo still did an overall good job.
Paulo Ferrari: Our captain played a decent game, but he didn't attack as much as expected. Nothing amazing, but no errors nonetheless. Converted his penalty shot. His overall good performacnes this season have brought Villarreal to be interested in incorporating him in December.
Eduardo Tuzzio: He continued playing despite what seemed to be a minor injury in the first half. He did well, though he almost gave Arsenal a goal when he kicked the air rather than the ball in one play.
Cristian Nasuti: "El Colorado" was once again solid in defense and tried to score with his killer headers. He was one of the players who cared most about the match and once again left a good image as a center-back.
Leonardo Ponzio: Personally, I think he was one of the best players on the field. Ever since the day he was included on the starting team vs. Boca, the ex-Zaragoza player has delivered some exceptional performances. He has been defending very well and attacks when needed. Ponzio has managed to transform himself from a substitute to a very important first-team player. With no known interested teams in him, he could be a vital part of the team next semester.
Fernando Belluschi: Missed an extremely clear chance at the tenth minute that would have left us previewing the final vs. America rather than talking about our elimination. Later on in the match he had some great shots, including a fantastic one in the dieing minutes of the game, but Cuenca did not let the midfielder celebrate. He was one of the players that missed his shot in the penalty shoot-out.
Oscar Ahumada: A very poor performance by the #5. He didn't do much (if anything) throughout the whole game. To top it off, he was expelled in the second half.
Rene Lima: In my opinion, the best player on the field last night (behind Cuenca -Arsenal's goalkeeper). He recuperated, distributed, gave the great assist to Belluschi (10th minute), and had a potential shot. Unfortunately, he was not able to continue his positive performance after the match, and took an extremely horrible penalty which left us out of the tournament.
Diego Buonanotte: Tried more than most of the players out there. He had a few sparks here and there, but more than often seemed to hold on to the ball for way too long.
Ariel Ortega: "El Burrito" was not able to do much. He did well while on the field, but was injured early on in the game by Andres San Martin (it just happened to be an ex-River player!). No word on how long he will be out for (not like it matters much now).
Andres Rios: The youngster did not receive the ball much and was not able to mark his prescence. His substitute was able to do much more (see below).
The Substitutes -
Mauro Rosales: The ex-Ajax player entered sooner than expected to replace the injured Ortega. He didn't do as much as we expected, but did contribute every now and then. He should have taken the fourth penalty instead of Lima.
Rolando Zarate: It was a surprise to see him enter the field, but he ended up being one of the best players present. He gave a few good crosses and had some good shots. He was one of the two players who converted his penalty shot (Ferrari being the other).
Augusto Fernandez: Augusto was a substitute due to not being completely fit after his injury. He came in towards the end of the match but did not have time to do much. Why he wasn't one of the penalty takers is beyond me.

The Copa Sudamericana 2007 is now a thing of the past for River Plate. Only hypothetical questions remain: What if Colombia would have shown some respect by letting Falcao play? What if Ariel Ortega had not gotten injured during the start of the match? What if Augusto Fernandez/Rosales/Ponzio had taken our fourth penalty shot instead of Rene Lima? What if the pitch was in good conditions? There is no correct answer to any of these questions, yet they keep on appearing in my mind.

Tolo Gallego and Diego Simeone in a close race.
So Diego Simeone is finally retired from a footballer's career? Will it be his first challenge as a football club manager?

Simeone retired unexpectedly from Racing a few years ago to become their manager and was pretty unsuccessful, being replaced soon after
but he turned right around and went to Estudiantes and helped them to their first championship in over 20 years later that year
as we all know, Simeone was one of the great midfielders of his day and is a natural leader
he was born to be a trainer and his teams have played very positive offensive football, which is encouraging

River wasn't that much more ambitious in the 1st leg either ... creating nil chances of goal. In the 2nd leg, at least Arsenal came really close to scoring twice. The away goal rule was what Arsenal played for in the 2nd leg ...

For a well thought, disciplined tactic by Arsenal, River showed little ambition even at home. Lining one forward when you need to win? Against a small team from the local tournament? River is not an italian team, that has as a rule of thumb to avoid being score. Wtf is that 4-3-2-1? River was wrongly coached for a while now, and paid for his coach's lack of security for: his job, his tactical scheme and his squad.

Reality check: 6 games played ... 1 win, 4 ties, one loss, plus the pk loss. In 4 of those games River didn't score. Not enuff. With US$20+ million invested this past year alone, River should be competing, in mid-November, for something. Instead, it is vacation time once again.

PS: Thanx Passarella. We will miss you. :D

He is a great young player, quite deadly in the box ... when he re-gains his calmness (sometimes he hurries too much - a consequence of his age) he will be a "scary" center forward in any league.

He broke his ACL 18 months ago when he was on fire, soon after his debut in the 1st team. Took him an entire semester to re-gain his form after the 6 months recovering from the surgery.

As much as River missed him, he didn't have good games against Defensor at home or Arsenal away ... nor against Independiente, the day River, "technically", said good-bye to the local tournament after not being able to beat the "reds" at home.

As to Colombia ... it is perfectly understandable. Falcao is their starting CF, probably their most important player nowadays, and they need to start adding 3 points after tieing 0-0 their 1st 2 games.

can't argue with vip
like I said before, we can kick around boca with ease but only being able to celebrate that (and not the championships that come when we win the smaller games too) leaves me hollow inside after a while
we need to make our players play like they do against Boca in every match
hopefully this dreadful cycle will shift with the departure of Aguilar and a redefinition of the shirt
I don't know how he's still around, selling Buonanotte before he made his first team debut

as for falcao
it is difficult to tell with him right now because of issues of consistency at the personal level (injuries) and at the team level
the nature of Argentine football has several individual battles playing out within the larger team battle and during a match and there can be several shifts of advantage which sometimes leads to fleeting moments of unparalleled genius
this is different than form, because it's unique to the circumstances of the match and indeed the moment in the match
this is what makes south american football so exciting, imo
download a couple of futbol de primeras in the next few weeks and you'll see the spectacular moments I refer to because they happen every week
if Falcao can regain some consistency and if he starts to show well at the international level, we may hear a lot more from him in the future

I just read an article today, and in that article it mentioned the possibility of Ramon Diaz and Andres D'Alessandro returning!!! That's my favorite coach and my favorite player. I couldn't ask for more, and to have that become a reality would be a dream come true. In fact, it's not so far from being true:

- Ramon spoke to Aguilar for three hours and is very excited about a possible return. He has even mentioned a few players who he wants to have join the team (D'Alessandro and his two sons are some of the mentioned ones), and everything seems to be going on the right path.
- Aguilar wants to bring in Ramon Diaz at any cost to end his Presidential career in a good manner and even possibly extend his term another four years. This would require pleasing Ramon (to please the fans), and Ramon could have in mind a few important reinforcements *cough* D'Alessandro!! *cough*. Not to mention that D'Alessandro is not getting along well with Zaragoza's coach, making a loan a good possibility for both River and the Spanish side.

I can't explain how happy I am. This is great. Of course neither of the two have agreed their return, but why not hope and be happy for once?

Why not Ramon bring back Aimar???(That's my wish~:)~)
Maybe the price of Pablito is too high, right?

If this really happens~~Congratulations,River fans.

Ramon Diaz rejected Jose Maria Aguilar's proposal to return to River Plate and will stay with San Lorenzo till atleast December of next year. The conclusion surprised many, especially with the Argentine Press nearly concluding that his arrival was confirmed, but nothing can be done now.

Today is Thanksgiving, and what better way to celebrate the holiday than by thanking our President for the return of Ramon Diaz. But why should he have gotten our thanks? Aguilar deserved to receive a slap in the face, not a praise, and that's exactly what he received. After dismissing Ramon in 2002, despite having the coach clearly win the Argentine tournament playing great football, the two have been getting along like Water and Oil, and many are forgetting that. A few years ago, Aguilar even went as far as saying in a press conference that Ramon Diaz would never return to River while he was in charge of the club. Now I hear some people critisizing Ramon for not returning when given a chance: "If he was a real River fan, he would chose River over San Lorenzo any day" is one of the things I've heard more than once. Well, put yourself in his position. If somebody fired you without a legitimate reason, would you return to save that same person's career? In most cases, no, and there is nothing wrong with that decision.

Of course this decision has brought more negatives than positives along with it. One that upsets me a lot is the possibility of having ex-River star Andres D'Alessandro join San Lorenzo instead of River in January because of his friendship with Diaz. But besides that there is a big problem circulating "los Millonarios" now. With the two main targets (Ramon Diaz and Diego Simeone) now discarded, who will replace Daniel Passarella? Claudio Borghi, Leonardo Astrada, Omar Labruna, and Americo Gallego are the most rumored names, though Aguilar guarantees that there is not one firm candidate in mind now. Personally, I am not too interested in seeing any of them. Of those four, I think Astrada would be the one with most chances of succeeding. Either way, he is comfortable in Colon and plans on staying there for next semester.

So who will coach the club if it's not them? Call me crazy, but I'd like to see Jorge Gordillo stay a while extra. "El Tapon" will be on the bench for the last three games of the Clausura, and maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to extend his term. He may not be the most luxurious coach in terms of tournaments won, but he is a person that is identified with River and already knows the players well since he's been managing the reserves for a while now. Of course if I had Ramon and Simeone as options, I wouldn't go with Gordillo, but there is no other "juicy" names going around, and I don't want to see anybody become our coach just because we need one. Besides, Ramon Cabrero was in Gordillo's position two years ago, and now his team (Lanus) is first in the Argentine league with just three games left. Whatever Aguilar's decision is, let's pray it's a good one.

1) the first which agillar already spoke to is bambino Veira, the one thing on he`s favor is that he won everything with river as a coach including the 86 livertadores and continental cup.
2) simione, he still has not made a desicion on estudiantes and made the ultimuntum to estudiantes that he wants 4 new player for next season and he want`s them signed by december wich is impossible and an exuse to leave.

How about today's match against Olimpo? Will Falcao be fit?

Falcao is not fit to play. Their CF "star signing" last year was Marco Ruben ... started.

It is very unusual that 4 teams from 2nd Division make it to the first division. This year, that was the case, as the 2 that went thru directly were Olimpo and San Martin while Huracan and Tigre made it thru the playoffs with the teams in 17th and 18th place.

Well, so far River had played against San Martin SJ (lost 1-0), against Tigre (lost 4-1), against Huracan (lost 2-1) and today ... at Olimpo, River lost 4-0. And it could had been the complete hand ...

After 18 games, River is on 23 points ... 11 points behind Tigre, 1 point behind Huracan (with one game on hand), 1 point ahead of Olimpo (who had 6 pts after the first 10 rounds) and 5 points ahead of San Martin SJ.

Hey,
Theirs been some rumours around now that Porto are close to picking up
Belluschi.

...
I was wondering is their any rumours or news that you've heard on this topic?
Thanks,
Carlitos

In Argentina they are not mentioning why both dirigentes were in England, but it was speculated that it was to sell players.

Hidalgo and his partners own 50% of the transfer of Belluschi ... after taking the first US$5 million.

So if he is sold for US$15 million, the first 5 go to the Hidalgo group and the balance is 50-50 with River.

December 14, 2007 -

Juan Pablo Carrizo: The goalkeeper had confirmed that his era in River had come to an end, though his European passport has not been validated yet. Other possibilities exist at the moment, yet the doors to stay with "la banda" have opened up once again.

Fernando Belluschi: Porto of Portugal and Olympiakos of Greece are interested in him. Although there are no official offers for him, River's directives aren't going to put any traps to his possible departure. A positive point? Simeone requested that they don't sell him, not to mention that River would only get 40% of his transfer money if he is sold (not too much money).

Augusto Fernandez: Fiorentina (Italy) and Levante (Spain) are planning on acquiring the right winger over the January transfer window. The plan, for now, is to not sell both Belluschi and him at the same time (one would leave, while the other would stay for at least another six months).

Radamel Falcao Garcia: Fluminense of Brazil are still interested in the foward's services. They were willing to pay $5,000,000 for 50% of the transfer, though River want to get paid around $16,000,000 for the full transfer. The reason? If only 50% is sold a good percentage will have to go to the Fair Play school (where Falcao originally came from), while selling all his rights would mean only paying 10% to the school.

Diego Buonanotte: Atletico Madrid are rumoured to be chasing the "dwarf". Not much more is known on his situation, though it would be an extremely huge upset to see him leave at such a young age and with a very small amount of minutes in Primera.

Daniel Vega: The ex-Nueva Chicago goalkeeper is on loan, though he would like to leave due to not receiving chances. The directives will be looking to convince him to stay, though his future does not seem to clear, especially if Carrizo remains in the team next semester.

Sebastian Dominguez: Estudiantes's defender, who was one of the candidates to reinforce our back-line next sesaon, has agreed to join America (Mexico) and therefore will not be wearing red-and-white starting January.

vamos Cholo
he was playing nice offensive football at Estudiantes, recently using the Bielsa 3-3-1-3
imo one of Passarella's failures this last time was that he couldn't reinstitute the 3 man back line even though we had the players to do it..hopefully Simeone will be more successful
I can't even really try to think of a formation because I suspect many players will leave

Looking forward to this. I was always a fan of Simione. He didn't dissapoint. Seemed prepared when he came to play, and also seemed prepared as a headcoach as well. It's going to be interesting what moves he makes to re-inforce the backline, not to mention the scoring. I'd personally like to see Crespo come back, because this past season it has started to look if he is finally slowing down. I do not think he will come before the summer transfer, simply because Inter is playing so well, and have a legitimate shot at winning a CL title, not to mention the Scudetto again.

Speaking of Cave, he was pretty good tonight against Panionios (3-2) in the UEFA Cup. Scored the first goal and made the assist on the second one. Plus, he was the captain! (well, I have to say that since Bordeaux was already qualified before that game, it was a pretty young team on the pitch tonight and torito was one of the most experienced players :o ).
But he was very good also during the few minutes he played last sunday against Marseille and was very close to score the winning goal in the last minute of the game.

And if I remember well, Cholo, when he was still Estudiantes' coach, wanted Cave to join his club. Would be great if he managed to bring him back this time. FUCK BURDEOS!!!

January 2, 2008 -

Fernando Belluschi: "El Rasta" will be going to Greece to finalize his transfer and sign a three year contract with Olympiakos. The deal, which will also leave River 15% of a future transfer fee, has officially been confirmed.

Sebastian Abreu: The Uruguayan will be the first reinforcement of 2008 for River, after finally resigning his contract with Tigres of Mexico. He will arrive as a free agent on loan for 18 months.

Radamel Falcao Garcia: Everything seemed to indicate that the Colombian would be transfered to Fluminense of Brazil. In fact, the suspicious deal ultimately fell, leaving River with another foward for now. There is no guarantee that he won't be sold to another club, but if he stays, he will have to fight for his spot vs. Abreu, Alexis Sanchez, Ruben, Andres Rios, Buonanotte, amongst others.

Rodrigo Archubi and Sergio Almiron: River plan on incorporating either player on loan to reinforce the left side of our midfield.

Augusto Fernandez: The youngster could be sold to Lazio or Fiorentina, though the plan is to have him remain at the club for another six months.

Julio Cesar Caceres: The defender, who performed well while at River in 2006, was mentioned as one of the possible reinforcements, but not much more than that. To my surprise, the club he seems to be linked closest to is Boca Juniors! This transfer would be sad, not only because of his past with "la banda", but also because he really is a good defender. If the transfer goes through, we can officially call him one of the few traitors since Gabriel Cedres.

First it was Cienciano, then Almagro, Godoy Cruz, San Martin (SJ), Tigre, Olimpo, Arsenal, Caracas...... now Universidad San Martin of Peru. Yes: River Plate have managed to achieve the unimaginable and lost to a team that was just recently founded 4 years ago and has an average crowd attendance of 50 people per match.

Truth be told, the Peruvians were not 11 Maradonas. Although they were constantly over-praised by the commentators, they did seem very mediocre and very few of them actually seemed like talented players. Their overall gameplay wasn't anything fantastic, and the only reason I could say they deserved the win was just because River played a worse, less organized game.

Our offense continously lacked ideas, while our defense went from bad to horrible. I leave you guys with the "P.R":

The Player Review -

Juan Pablo Carrizo: JP had a really good game and made some great saves. One of the few players that can actually escape from being bashed this time.
Paulo Ferrari: The ex-captain of the team was slow, attacked horribly, and defended even worse. If he is one day remembered for being a great player, it surely won't be for what he did yesterday.
Eduardo Tuzzio: The central defender continues showing signs that he will be turning 34-years old this year. Despite his positives, he has become a slow player who takes way too long to react (a common symptom for his age). Once a strong and secure player, we cannot rely on Tuzzio for these characteristics anymore.
Gustavo Cabral: The ex-Racing player still has a debt with River fans: having arrived a month ago, he still lacks good performances. Over the summer he received red cards, and was often the victim of poor performances. Yesterday wasn't an exception.
Cristian Villagra: Arguably the best on the backline, yet he still had a bad game. Not much was shown by the defender, though not too many errors were committed by him either.
Augusto Fernandez: Little to nothing. At the beginning he did a few interesting things, but his game decreased as time passed.
Nicolas Domingo: I love the kid and see a bright future ahead of him, but yesterday wasn't his day. He was replaced by Falcao during half-time, which was the correct decision based on his performance.
Leonardo Ponzio: The defensive midfielder had a fantastic game, especially when he was left as the lone DMF when Domingo left the field. He recuperated the ball throughout the whole game and made some amazing saves in which he single-handedly avoided goals. Ponzio was without a doubt the best player for "los millonarios" last night.
Ariel Ortega: "El Burrito" wasn't the player we are used to seeing: he failed his juke attempts, his passes were unsuccessful, and he had little overall influence in the team's offensive duties. As proven in the past, much more can be shown on behalf of Ariel.
Alexis Sanchez: Along with Ortega, he was probably the most marked player on the field. He did very little while on the pitch - a rare thing for the Chilean.
Sebastian Abreu: The Uruguayan had a relatively good game and was River's best attacking gun. A few good headers summed up the night for the foward, who was unable to get the ball past the goalkeeper.
The Substitutes -
Radamel Falcao Garcia: The Colombian replaced Domingo in the second half with the mission of adding offensive flare to the team. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful, though this could be due to the fact that he had to play further down the field than his usual position. He didn't touch the ball too often, causing his presence to not leave any marks.
Matias Abelairas: Decent game, yet little shown. There's always room for improvement.
Mauro Rosales: Nothing at all from the ex-Ajax foward. Many fans are starting to lose patience with him, and although he will continue to be given opportunities, his level of gameplay is expected to improve greatly if he plans to continue receiving chances.

Although this loss hurts deeply and could just be a preview of what the future will be like, one shouldn't be let down just yet: last year Boca Juniors were humiliated in the group stage (lost 3-0 to Cienciano and Toluca) and still won the tournament. In fact, the last time the champions of the Libertadores won their first game was in 2004 - in 2005, Sao Paulo tied with The Strongest (BOL), in 2006 Internacional couldn't defeat Maracaibo (VEN), and last year Boca had trouble taking one point vs. Bolivar (BOL).

My point? Nobody will be happy with yesterday's display, but we must not lose confidence and should stick with the team till the end.

Vamos River!

The reason why Boca was humiliated in the group stage last year is that we played most subs in the away matches.
It's different from yesterday's River~~~:D

Well there you have it: our new home jersey. Very similar to our current one (well, I guess I should say "previous" now). The few differences I noticed:

- The collar has a bit of black on it.
- The back of the collar reads "El Mas Grande (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/locoxriver/el_mas_grande_back.jpg)".
- The diagonal stripe is not as "diagonal" as before, and ends a bit more in the center.

Nice jersey, but not too many changes nonetheless. We will be seeing it worn from now till February/March 2010. Comments?

By the way, has anyone seen the two new away ones? I can't seem to find them anywhere (except the black one (http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a256/locoxriver/river-alt-negra.jpg) that was rumored to be released).

I think it's fantastic, back to basics and a long awaited improvement over our current atrocious away jersey..I may buy them both
and what better game to premiere it than against Velez on Sunday
this is easily our most important match so far against the best team in primera
we did well to draw away to el pincha, but if we are to really make an assault for 1st we have to beat Velez (and not to mention Boca) away

by the way, River, do you know of any places (in BsAs or online) to find vintage river jerseys?
I don't care if they're fake/truchas, as long as I don't pay much
I've been wanting an Alonso (http://www.geocities.com/colosseum/rink/3462/otros5.jpg) for some time now
I used to have a SANYO from the second Francescoli era but it was well worn and I was also 11 :o

Try Soccer10Shop (http://www.soccer10shop.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=river&osCsid=3980d85c0092e06e4718a0d341e742ee):

Got your Beto jersey there for $18 ($27 for long sleeves), and then there's several other jerseys. Give it a shot.

If all else fails, try MercadoLibre (http://www.mercadolibre.com.ar). It's the Argentinean eBay, so you are bound to find something you want there. Despite that, it's a bit more difficult since you have to contact the seller first regarding the Shipping and Payment.

great game today, though I have to say the ref (who called everything our way) was so terrible that it even made me mad!
even so, it was immature of Escudero and Bustos to argue
as biased as the ref was, Velez arguing every call did not help
the ref lost control and the match became very very rough and choppy in the second half as was seen by the red and the non call on Uglessich
motm Carrizo, his save in the first minutes saved the game, and he had several phenomenal stops throughout
Alexis was also great and el enano Buonanotte had a few moments as well, very difficult duo to stop..Rosales missed a few chances that were beyond belief though I think he was right for this counterattacking game, is it just me or has he lost some of that legendary speed? I confused him with the slower (esp after the knee injuries) Falcão several times today
I didn't like the second half but it was well played in the first we looked dangerous on every play

edit: sad news (http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2008/03/28/futbollocal/01637793.html), Ortega has once again fallen back into his addiction with alcohol :(
his reason for missing the training session a few days ago was because he was arrested in San Isidro for an drunken aggression towards his wife

River
29-03-2008, 12:18 AM
Ariel Ortega had unexpectedly missed yesterday's training session. Much was rumoured, but little was confirmed. It wasn't till today that the news was officially released: Unfortunately, "el Burrito" suffered yet another episode in his fight against alcohol.

This is nothing new. In fact, Ortega has a history of drinking problems. His current era in River began in June 2006, though he was set aside for long parts of the year due to this problem. In 2007 he returned to the team and had a strong pre-season. To make things better, he showed signs of good form and even scored a goal vs. Racing in a Torneo de Verano friendly. Shortly after, though, he fell in the alcohol trap once again and Daniel Passarella decided to seperate him from the team until he recuperated. In March of that year, he returned to the pitch. In June, River Plate's directives and coaching staff both agreed that the best thing to do was to place him in a rehabilitation clinic in order get rid of this illness once and for all.

Everything was on the right track since then, and alcohol now seemed like a thing of the past for the legend. To everyone's surprise a new incident happened yesterday. According to the Argentine press, Ariel had attended a party at a club on Wednesday (River was facing Universidad Catolica, but he didn't play because of an injury) and eventually ran into some alcohol. A few hours later he headed home, but the drinks were irreversable.

It is known that alcohol tends to make people react in extreme ways, and Ariel Ortega is no exception to this rule. In fact, the drinks brought out a rage in him, in what ultimately resulted in a heavy argument with his wife Danesa (physical abuse was rumoured to have happened). The neighbors, being concerned because of the loud noises that were occuring, called the Police to check-up on the Ortega household. After doing so, they took Ariel over to the local San Isidro Police station and held him there for approximately two hours.

Meanwhile, in Nuñez nobody knew what was going on with "el Burrito". The news finally broke out today, when Ortega appeared at the team's training session to explain to Simeone what had happened. He later trained with the team, though the "el Cholo" has decided that it is best for him to not concentrate for Sunday's game vs. Arsenal.

This is very unfortunate news. It is not good that he will be missing atleast one game, but this is secondary behind the fact that his illness has not vanished. We -the fans- may be sad to be missing a key player, but his wife, children, and friends will suffer more from losing an important person in their lives to alcohol. Hopefully this is the last episode of his illness - an illness with no cure.

it's really too bad about Ortega
the squad looked somewhat affected today, we had a pretty dismal game
Iker motm again, he saved us..it's uncanny he's a magnet in net, and how about his dribble past el Caldera again

it was somewhat of a torture to watch us hang on and not play well again, but it's a champion that scrapes out wins like this one..and Buonanotte with the touch of a genius

he's scored all of his goals in 2008, which by coincidence that Chamakh went to the African Cup, is when Blanc first even considered him for league matches (still don't know what he was thinking before that)

Nice 5-0 win over San Martin of Peru.

Now on to the important part:
Depending on today's results between Sportivo Luqueno-Audax and Sao Paulo-Atletico Nacional, we will find out which team we will be facing in the Round of Sixteen. For now, our rivals have been reduced to three candidates: San Lorenzo (most likely), Lanus, or Audax Italiano (CHI). San Lorenzo would be extremely complicated, due to their great players and their fantastic current form (just 3 points away from River in the Torneo Clausura). Lanus, meanwhile, is tough and always gives River a good fight till the end. The positive of facing either of these two teams would be the fact that they are from the same country, meaning that the team wouldn't have to travel nearly as much and would avoid jet lag.

As for Audax Italiano, they are also a great team. They have some very good players, including Chilean wonderkid Carlos Villanueva.

Edit:

And it has been confirmed. San Lorenzo will be our rivals. Here are all eight Round of Sixteen match-ups:

Yeah, I agree. Look at next week:

04/30 - vs. San Lorenzo (Copa)
05/04 - vs. Boca (Clausura)
05/07 - vs. San Lorenzo (Copa)

 What a schedule!

A few interesting observations:
- Depending on the results of the Round of Sixteen, we could see an All-Argentine/Brazilian Quarter-Finals stage.
- We can actually reach the Finals of the tournament without leaving the country (if we face San Lorenzo in Round of Sixteen, Estudiantes in Quarter-Finals, and Lanus/Boca in Semis).

Correct.

As for transfers -

Alexis Sanchez: Manchester United have offered 11 million euros for the Chilean wonderkid. Udinese, the owners of Alexis, have rejected the offer. For now, the possibilities of Sanchez staying seem very slim.
Augusto Fernandez: Several European clubs are after him, and it's highly likely that he'll depart in June. He may be joining Belluschi in Olympiakos, though he is more interested in Sevilla, Fiorentina, and Lazio's offers.

excited for this week, I think we must go into San Lorenzo to tie, Boca to win, and beat San Lorenzo in the second leg
if that all goes according to planned I will be a happy man, but this is the biggest test for Simeone yet
what he's done so far is create a flexible team..Passarella's downfall last time was that he created one main side with no replacements and immediately decided to concentrate on only one tournament
this time we have a deep bench and they're playing well across the board
so far I've been most impressed with Buonanotte and Abelairas

I've heard someone say recently that Ahumada is in the top 3 players of River right now and while it's not directly obvious, I agree he is a classy underrated player
I don't want him to leave, though, so tell your people he's horrible :p

as for this big week of 3 matches, well we have lost the first two, but I think we played well at San Lorenzo, couldn't do much more vs Boca, and have the week at stake on Thursday
if we can win at home and progress, it will only be the somewhat acceptable loss at Boca, but if we lose or draw we failed miserably over the biggest 270 minutes of the season and could drop off the clausura as well
the best situation at this point would be wins on Thursday and Sunday against Gimnasia and draws for Estudiantes-Boca, and San Lorenzo-Independiente (I could care less if either of them advance in the Libertadores)

Before anything, I must clarify that it's incredible that the players let the match go being up 2-0 with 2 players more than San Lorenzo. I also blame this partially on Aguilar, who didn't grab D'Alessandro when he had a chance and it came back to bite him in the ass. But before getting on CASLA's dick (like the commentators), we should also remember the poor reffing. Let's do a quick re-cap:

1st leg (2-1 in favor of San Lorenzo):
- Controversial penalty in favor of the home side which gave them the victory.

2nd leg (2-2):
- Goal by Abreu that was disallowed. Replays show that he was not offsides.
- Clear penalty for River when the match was up 1-0, yet the ref fails to call it.
- Silvera should have been expelled for hitting Tuzzio. Not long after, the same player plays the key role in San Lorenzo's first goal of the night.

Like I said, I can't believe our players let this game slip. But, honestly, there were too many clear ref errors in favor of San Lorenzo. Had they not existed, River probably would have qualified with ease (we would have had 2 goals extra, and San Lorenzo 2 less).

because I just read the forum rules..english: it's difficult to comment without having seen the match, but from what I hear they fucked up big time
were the reds to San Lorenzo justified? because (without having seen the match) I think that once a ref gives one or definitely after two red cards, the law of compensation is automatically applied where penalties and other fouls (including reds) not given no longer surprise
you have to say the possibility of being eliminated was always there, but that it happened in this was is an incredible shock to the team

edit: el Beto rips into the side (http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2008/05/09/copalibertadores/01668177.html)
his last point is telling, Boca is more successful right now because they have a core of 6 'referentes' that know how to win, I assume they are Ibarra, Battaglia, Ledesma, Roman, Palermo, and Palacio
so their side was not playing well, but when they needed them, those players came through
our problem is the lack of continuity on the club combined with the lack of spirit he also mentions and you mention above that we are about to lose our most talented players..again
we need this clausura but it is going to be very difficult now

vamos River todavía
the second half of this match was the most important 45 minutes of our season
the side started out the match very obviously affected by the 'semana negra' we had last week, with (essentially) 3 crucial losses, and we looked absolutely impotent
el lobo should never have given us this much trouble but the reaction of the side in the second half to maintain 1st place is terribly important and is something to build on
my favourite player of 2008, el Pitu Abelairas was the motm, with Orteguita a close second
we have hope going into el clasico with the red devils next weekend!

edit: there is a mini crisis around Ahumada's comments criticising the fans reaction to the 1-2 in the Libertadores
I hope it washes over because we improved a lot when Ahumada came on in the second half on Sunday and will definitely need him against Independiente..Ponzio has been poor lately

Out

Matias Abelairas: "Pitu" may well be on his way to Europe, after rumours state that Lazio are preparing a 5 million euro offer for the midfielder. If he doesn't leave with Carrizo to the Italian side in June, he still has chances of wearing a different jersey.

Cristian Villagra: Just when the left back began to play regularly well for River, it seems like he will move over to a team in the "Old Continent". Villarreal (Spain), Catania (Italy), and Olympiakos (Greece) would be just some of the many options for "Kity".

Alexis Sanchez: It is nothing new that the talented youngster has extremely small chances of remaining at the club after the Clausura. So what's the point of this note? Well, Independiente have expressed their interest in the Chilean and actually have a good chance of contracting him on loan after he leaves River. I could see it already: we face "el Rojo" in the Copa Sudamericana and are eliminated to the hands of Sanchez (ala D'Alessandro ).

Radamel Falcao Garcia: The forward was just one step away from migrating to a different club in January, but he decided that he wanted to stay at least one more season. Now, the Colombian will probably not have a choice, and the offers will come flying in. Who will be his replacement?

Eduardo Tuzzio, Danilo Gerlo, Cristian Nasuti, Leonardo Ponzio, and Mauro Rosales: Their time in River seems to be coming close to an end. The only way these players are expected to stay is if a tempting offer does not arrive in the halls of the Monumental.

In

Pablo Aimar and Roberto Ayala: The two historic River players are currently playing for Real Zaragoza, who recently descended to the second division of the Spanish league. This is just one of the reasons why Jose Maria Aguilar has decided to go after the duo. Still, it seems impossible that they'll join our squad for next season due to economic reasons. Also, doesn't the same article mentioning their possible arrival appear on Ole/Clarin/La Nacion every six months?

Andres D'Alessandro: If the Aimar operation isn't successful, it is said that "los millonarios" will go after "el Cabezon". Once again, doesn't the same article mentioning his possible arrival appear on Ole/Clarin/La Nacion every six months?

Ariel Ibagaza and Sebastian Leto: River will go after the two midfielders who are currently playing in Europe. It's pretty much the same story as always. Six months ago: "We couldn't bring you Aimar or D'Alessandro, but we did bring Abreu and Archubi!". In June: "We couldn't bring you Aimar or D'Alessandro, but we did bring Ibagaza and Leto!".

Hilario Navarro: River would be looking for a replacement for Carrizo, and Racing's goalkeeper could be one of the main targets. The negative? His knee injury does not impress the dirigentes.

Gustavo Cabral: Diego Simeone has been pleased with the ex-Racing defender's performance this season, and has requested that the management transform his loan into a permament incorporation for River.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Conclusion: Although we are expected to lose lots of great players, I kind of like this. We've been having a similar squad in the last few years, though things haven't gone well. I think it's time for a limpieza, and it wouldn't be a bad thing to see some of these players leave and make room for the new generation of pibes.

nooooo, Pitu is essential
we must do everything to keep him and Carrizo if we ever want another championship..and for 5 million..he is worth at least 8-10 if not more
if we let him go cheap that must be the end of Aguilar

as for Aimar and Ayala, I would like them to be Aguilar's parting gift before el Beto becomes our next president
Aimar will not succeed in Europe and Riquelme and Verón have more than proved that players of their stature don't have to
I still have hopes Pablito can regain his form and reappear on the national team

River

With both Radamel Falcao Garcia and Sebastian Abreu receiving tempting offers from foreign clubs, River is said to be on the look out for a new forward. Supposedly Santiago Salcedo is one of the targets, though I don't see it happening for one reason: Newell's are used to putting heavy price tags. Another player the team is after is a more known one to la banda: Ernesto Farias. His arrival seems more likely, but is he the player we need?

More updates to be posted later.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd love to have Salcedo next season, and now Mariano Barbosa is being mentioned as a candidate to replace Carrizo. Barbosa has always been one of my favorites, and I have always said that Argentina's goal should be in the hands of Carrizo, Ustari, or Barbosa.

Not all is well, though. With Locarno finally gone, it looked like it was the end to the "percentage" sales. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The following was published on Ole today:

 Yes, yes.. great deal. Abelairas, for whom Lazio were said to be preparing a 5 million euro offer. Andres Rios, who is a "crack" and if he continues the way he was can be worth A LOT of money. Cabral, who started off shakey but has slowly been improving. Bou, Lizio, and Oliva, three of the biggest prospects in our lower divisions that are touted to possibly have a NT future. I think we can all agree that 9 million for 50% of all their transfers is a great deal.

that transfer policy is ridiculous
the 'scandal' with Ahumada a few weeks ago where he threatened the dirigentes with exposing their transfer policy was a farce
this whole thing is a farce and just because we are champions does not mean that 1) we deserved it and definitely not that 2) that we are doing the right thing
I still say fuera Aguilar and that we should get rid of this stupid transfer policy

River is after quite a few players. With Ayala, Aimar, and Solari already having backed off, here are the current candidates to reinforce the squad:

Goalkeepers: Nicolas Navarro (Napoli), Mariano Barbosa (Free Agent; ex-Banfield and Villarreal), Mariano Andujar (Estudiantes; extremely low chances).
Defenders: Nicolas Spolli (Newell's), Sebastian Dominguez (America; coached by Simeone in Estudiantes), Facundo Quiroga (Wolfsburg; yup, the same guy that Aguilar chases every six months), Juan Pablo Sorin (Hamburg; would be a target if Villagra leaves).
Midfielders: Ignacio Piatti (Gimnasia LP; a business group wants to buy him and loan him to us), Diego Barrado (owned by River and returning from a loan with Olimpo; Simeone is said to be interested in his services), Rubens Sambueza (returning from his loan with Pumas), Andres San Martin (returning from his loan with Arsenal de Sarandi).
Forwards: Santiago Salcedo (Newell's).

Mario Yepes's name is also floating around a bit, and the Colombian himself even expressed his interest in returning. Still, I don't think he'll be returning now.

As for players out:

Goalkeepers: Juan Pablo Carrizo (to Lazio), Juan Marcelo Ojeda (unknown destination; highly likely to be transferred if another 'keeper arrives).
Defenders: Cristian Nasuti (unknown destination - wanted by a few Mexican clubs and Godoy Cruz; fed up with not receiving opportunities), Danilo Gerlo (wanted by Asteras Trípoli of Greece).
Midfielders: Oscar Ahumada (hasn't renewed his soon-to-be-expired-contract yet), Rene Lima (to PAOK FC of Greece on loan), Diego Barrado (if Simeone decides to not use him, Godoy Cruz and a few other "small" clubs are interested in acquiring the midfielder on loan), Nicolas Domingo (wanted by Atlas of Mexico).
Forwards: Sebastian Abreu (to Beitar Jerusalem), Alexis Sanchez (returning to Udinese from his loan with River)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

River incorporated Robert Flores (http://www.ole.clarin.com/notas/2008/07/08/futbollocal/01710738.html) (arriving from River Plate (URU), but owned by Villarreal), a 23 year old Uruguayan midfielder who is compared to Francescoli by people from his native country. He was chosen as the Best Player of the last Uruguayan Clausura in a poll taken by 100 journalists. He could end up being a very cheap and interesting incorporation: hopefully we get to buy a percentage of him in the future, because else he will only be with the team till June 2009 (he's on a one year loan, just like Alexis Sanchez was this last season).

As for other incorporation, River is still aiming for Santiago Salcedo and Mariano Andujar. The doors for Andujar are now opening up a bit due to Mariano Barbosa's arrival to Estudiantes. I personally would have rather gone after Barbosa (he was offered to River first) since he would have been much cheaper and I actually think he is more talented, but whatever. Pablo Barrientos (midfielder) and Gonzalo Bergessio (forward) are two other names Aguilar & Co. are currently considering.

Cristian Nasuti will most likely be leaving to Racing on loan, but Newell's, Gimnasia, Godoy Cruz, and a few Mexican clubs are still chasing him. If Mauro Rosales doesn't stay, he will probably end-up in Mexico since both Pumas and America are interested in his services. A part-exchange deal to Newell's (for Salcedo) isn't discarded.

Juan Pablo Sorin just had his contract resigned from Hamburg and I would love for him to come, but I heard it probably wasn't going to happen. If anything, Argentinos seem to be expressing much more interest in him than River. I think he could still contribute to the team.. maybe not as much as before, but I believe he still has something to offer.

so we tied in Santa Fe with Colón 1-1
it was an entertaining match that swung violently in both directions
they started out better and didn't score, then we got better and they got a lucky late goal off a corner against the run of play
we started the second half much like the end of the first half and Falcao missed a sitter only for Robert to score on his tournament debut minutes later
then they improved and deserved to win at the end..missing some ridiculous chances
the key of this match is that we should have taken advantage of the middle portion of the match to get a lead..their momentum at the end would not have comes about if we were winning

Well we also have partnerships with Tigres of Mexico and Atletico Paranaense of Brazil. It's just a sort of business relationship where we share ideas with each other...FCD(the most profitable team in the league behind Los Angeles) will share business models while River will share their expertise of training youth players. I'd imagine they'll also play each other once a year or something as well as possible pre-season training.

west501

I believe it
we 'lose' Ortega and not to mention Carrizo and Alexis
I was watching the River Campeon Clausura 2008 dvd recently and we really played quite poorly for large stretches of that tournament
we won it because no one else was able to take it
aside from pure luck we largely relied on individual brilliance from Carrizo in particular, Ortega emotionally, and Buonanotte who was our leading scorer, with some honourable mentions to Alexis as well
Abreu was terrible, Rosales worst, Ponzio lost, and Simeone barking like a small dog on the sideline
so I am not surprised that a few, but very significant, changes could change our fortune so much
it is pretty amazing to think how narrow the line between a championship side and a bottom dweller is though and that's why I want Aguilar out
we could win a lot more championships without him

Ha, It seems Espanyol de Barcelona is interested in Buonanotte for €15m.
Knowing Aguilar, he will most likely sell him.

west501
26-10-2008, 12:30 AM
he already has
to balance the books a few years ago, Aguilar sold the transfer rights to basically all of our promising young talent before most of them even played a match in Primera
Buonanotte was one of the players in that deal, so when we do sell him, we won't see most of the money
it hurts the supporters and members to see that the club is in such a weak negotiating position

Wow. I read that River is playing poorly, but yesterday I discovered you are last but one in the table. Last term you were the champions and now you are on the bottom. Is it a normal thing in Argentine football (I mean the last decade or so)?

River
01-02-2009, 04:46 AM
So Marcelo Gallardo has reached an agreement with River, he only needs to pass his medical test to make his signing official. I think that a drunk Ortega is at least 15 times more valuable to the team than a perfectly normal Gallardo. I do, though, understand that the club is doing horribly and that a change is needed quickly, so Gallardo's arrival might help. He's not the player I'd be going after (he was playing bad when he left River 2 years ago, and since then has failed in the MLS), but he is one of those "different" players that River lacks. Besides, maybe Buonanotte's level of play may rise next to "el Muneco", like it had when he played alongside Ortega.

In other news, Rubens Sambueza also seems to be close to returning. He is leaving Flamengo six months early after a not-so-successful spell, and even though he was linked to Vasco da Gama, his future now seems to be in Nunez. I know he is not everybody's favorite player, but I can see him playing well in Gorosito's team. I've been saying this for a while now, and I'll continue saying it: River needs a classic left-winger, not Abelairas. We need someone who is fast, stays on the wing, and gets the ball to the forwards. Sambueza could be this person. I either see him surprising us and doing well, or just completely failing. Hopefully it's the first option.

Question, question: why didn't we go after Jonathan Santana? He was sooooo accessible, but now signed with San Lorenzo on loan and with an option for a future transfer. He was cheap, willing to return to River, and much better than all the other names that are being thrown around to reinforce the squad. Why couldn't Aguilar try a little harder?

Other possible reinforcements? Jose Sosa and Damian Escudero, both being players that I do like, are said to have possibilities of joining the team on loan due to their lack of opportunities in Europe. Still, I wouldn't get too excited, since every decent name that is proposed to join the club gets thrown out within days (Ortega, Santana, Fabbiani, etc.). Diego Placente was also offered, so we'll see what happens with that.

*Sigh*

Well, Oscar Ahumada's transfer to Espanyol had been cancelled due to the Spanish club not having enough funds to actually pay for the transfer. But that's not what makes me so upset: apparently Leo Ponzio's transfer to Zaragoza is a done deal. This is horrible news since I personally always thought he was one of the best players on the team (IMO, the best behind Falcao). But not only that: the transfer will be worth approximately 2 million euros. Does that make sense to anyone, especially considering how we bought him from the same exact team two years ago for 3.5 million euros? That's approximately $4,500,000 that we payed and $2,600,000 that we're selling him for. Fucking Aguilar and his transactions.

And hear this: according to the Argentine Press, Juan Mercier would be very close to joining River. The deal would be done in exchange for $1,500,000 for 50% of the transfer. Wait, wait, wait... you are telling me that we are paying +/- 1 million less than what Ponzio is worth for 50% of a nobody like Mercier? Not to mention that this guy is older than Ponzio (turning 29 in two days; Ponzio just turned 27 this month) and whose "impressive" career includes teams like Flandria, Deportivo Moron, Tristan Suarez, and Platense. He joined Argentinos Jrs. in 2007, making it the first time he ever played in a team that was not in the third division!! Give me a break.. If you are that old and the majority of your career has been in small teams that aren't even good enough for the second division, you are no where near the level that you should be to play in River. I may be wrong, but this just looks like another unsuccessful transfer (ala Patino, Oberman, Loeschbor, etc.).

Thanks God, Ponzio was sold, I can´t stand anymore with our players, they are extremely poor for our history, only a few guys can make it, like Falcao, Buonanotte, Nico Sanchez...

what upsets me is that there are a number of our players that are not doing well and/or had the opportunity to return
Ortega, D'Alessandro, Aimar, Saviola, Crespo, etc
they would do well, but unfortunately don't consider us because of where we are right now
Falcao was right that we need a referente in the lineup and remember Gallardo was about to go to Estudiantes last week
I don't know if el muñeco is the answer we need right now but he is a step up and should associate well with el enano and Falcao
we have good strikers, but they are getting no midfield support right now
if Gallardo can create good runs for Rosales, Salcedo, Falcao etc, we should be able to score more
I hate how basic this discussion has become

None of them are going to come when the team is doing as bad as it is doing right now, and with a douchebag like Aguilar behind it. Why would a great player like Trezeguet leave Juventus when he is playing well in Serie A and getting a great paycheck while at it? If you told me River would give him the possibility to reach glory and win the Libertadores, then yeah.. but why would he join River just to suffer weekend after weekend and finish dead last in the table?

Besides, the statements he made of dreaming of joining River weren't made just now. It was a few years back.

Well as many of you may know by now, Cristian Fabbiani ended up rejecting Velez's offer ultimately stating that he couldn't sleep the night before the medical test and realized that he wouldn't feel passion for Velez's jersey, as he would in River. There wasn't any agreement with Newell's earlier on when this happened, so he was pretty much playing with his future: he mentioned that he knew that this could mean 6 months without playing, but he was willing to take the risk to play for the club of his dreams. I don't know about you guys, but this guy has won me over: he rejected offers from highly-potential candidates to win the tournament next season (such as San Lorenzo and Velez) and rejected playing again for his current club (Newell's Old Boys) in order to play for River.. a River that is in an extreme crisis right now. That's heart right there, more love for the jersey then our whole current squad combined.

Anyway, apparently an agreement was reached between the two sides later on in the day. River is said to be offering Salcedo (as well as paying for his wages during the next 12 months) and an economic recompensation of $250,000 for ending Fabbiani's loan early. The only thing remaining now is for Salcedo to accept returning to Newell's. It may be tougher then it seems, though, since Salcedo insists on wanting to stay next semester to change the image he left in his first six months at the club.

Regarding the future playmaker(s), there was plenty of news in the last 24 hours. Marcelo Gallardo postponed his medical revision once again, leaving doubt once again if he will actually be joining the club. What could be the reason behind this? Well, the hopes of Ariel Ortega's return to the club have once again revived. River are once again attempting to bring him back and are going to make an offer, though it still won't be what Independiente are asking for ($1,500,000). There are a few rumours that Aguilar will be offering either $1,000,000 or $500,000 and a few players (Barrado? Archubi?), but I don't know how true this is. What is official, though, is that Carlos Avila (creator of the TyC channel and candidate to be President of River in this year's elections) offered to help bring Ortega back early. He is a good friend of Independiente's owner Daniel Vila, has a lot of money, and wants to earn votes for the coming elections, so it makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, though, it is said that Aguilar would be rejecting his help.

As for the defensive midfielder, we may be gaining one and losing one. Aguilar is considering including Nicolas Domingo in the negociations for Juan Mercier. If this is true, I'd be just about ready to kill myself: Domingo -along with Falcao, Ferrari, and recently-transfered Ponzio- are the only players I actually support on the current squad, so I'd be terribly disappointed to see him go. If he does go, though, I hope it's just on loan. This kid has future and it would be a terrible loss footballistically and economically.

Another area that the directives are looking to reinforce is the goalkeeper spot. Neither Ojeda nor Vega convinced them during the Pre-Season friendlies, so they began looking elsewhere. Gaston Sessa and Mariano Barbosa are being mentioned (I don't want the first one at all, and the second I like, but he hasn't been playing in Estudiantes, so he may not be in shape to play), but if they arrive it would only be for the Copa Libertadores. And surprise, surprise.. the other candidate is... Mauricio Caranta! He is currently at conflict at Boca (in reality, more with the DT Ischia) and isn't even allowed to train with the squad. They are trying to get rid of him for financial reasons, and a business group is trying to buy his transfer and place him at River. I personally never liked him too much, but can we say that he's worse than Ojeda?

All I can say is that if Gallardo, Ortega, and Fabbiani come, my hopes for a decent (and possibly successful) season will return. We would be gaining two club idols with plenty of experience, and a player that is dieing to play for River more than any other player I've ever seen. Many are saying that the arrival of those 3 + Mercier is almost a done deal, so we'll see. Still, they can easily be far from Nunez: Gallardo could have signed a week ago and still hasn't, Ortega is always complicated because of the expensive recompensation Independiente want, and Fabbiani's arrival depends on Salcedo.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good news... finally!

River have finally reached an agreement with Newell's to bring Cristian Fabbiani. "Los Millonarios" will be paying $500,000 and loaning Andres Rios for a year. Santiago Salcedo, who won't be joining Newell's as expected, may be heading to Velez.

But the arrival of Fabbiani isn't the only good news. According to several Argentine sources (Ole, Clarin, C5N, and some others), Marcelo Gallardo and Ariel Ortega will also be joining the club in the coming days. Gorosito took the dirigentes word and gave Gallardo a call. "El Muneco" is expected to take his medical exam tomorrow. Ortega, meanwhile, would be arriving thanks to a 3rd party (Carlos Avila? a business group?). Mariano Barbosa is also almost a River player.

I must admit I am pretty excited to see River actually have a chance of finishing above the 20th spot on the table this time around. Can you imagine the difference between the team we saw vs. Boca and the following team?:

Vega/Barbosa;
Ferrari-Quiroga-N. Sanchez-Villagra;
Ahumada;
Ortega-Gallardo-Buonanotte;
Falcao-Fabbiani;

I am not saying Gorosito will use that formation or that line-up, but that's what I'd like to see.

"Gordo Papada" Aguilar rejected Carlos Avila's help to bring Ortega back (the businessman was going to pay Independiente to let "el Burrito" go early and place him in River), so Ortega will be staying in Mendoza. This is bad news for everyone: for River fans who were excited about having their idol back, for Ortega who was already packing his bags, and for Carlos Avila who was going to gain several votes from this transaction. Apparently the only one who is happy is Aguilar, who seems to enjoy seeing River suffer.

It's easy: the elections for next year's President of the club will be held at the end of the year, and Carlos Avila is one of the candidates. He has a lot of money and is good friends with Daniel Vila (they used to own La Red together), so the transaction wasn't that complicated for him to accomplish. In exchange, he was winning over thousands of River fans and his chances of winning the elections have increased enormously in the last few days.

Well Aguilar isn't re-running for President in these coming elections, so it wouldn't have hurt him that way. It's more a matter of personal pride. By accepting Avila's help, Aguilar would have pretty much confirmed that his team and him are a complete failure: what they had been trying to do for 2 months (..and we unsuccessful at), Avila resolved in less than 24 hours. That's a huge slap in the face. I mean really, you are telling me that one man can easily resolve differences with Independiente over Ortega, but a whole institution can't? Give me a break.

River have finally reached an agreement with Newell's to bring Cristian Fabbiani. "Los Millonarios" will be paying $500,000 and loaning Andres Rios for a year. Santiago Salcedo, who won't be joining Newell's as expected, may be heading to Velez.

Newell's coach Sensini wasn't too interested in Rios and River managed to convince Salcedo to return to Rosario, so the deal has cahnged a bit. Instead of paying $500,000 + Rios for Fabbiani, River will be paying $150,000 + a 12 month-loan of Salcedo with his wages paid. Cristian Fabbiani is officially a River player now and even attended the training session earlier on today along with Marcelo Gallardo.

Regarding Gorosito's constant request for a left-back, it seems as if "los Millonarios" will be acquiring Jose Schaffer. The current Racing player would arrive on loan after a "business group" purchases him from "La Academia"

Unfortunately Aguilar didn't include Nicolas Domingo on the Torneo Apertura roster, so for now he would only be playing in the Copa Libertadores. That's if he doesn't move to Argentinos Jrs., who are also interested in Rubens Sambueza. Pipo keeps on insisting on bringing Juan Mercier (who yesterday was pretty much discarded), so the dirigentes will make another attempt to bring him and may actually acquire him this time. If not, the Paraguayan Victor Caceres -who plays for Libertad- is the alternative.

And as everyday in the last few weeks, there's a surprise: Maxi Lopez could be making a return. The directives weren't all that crazy about a possible return of Lopez, but the forward wants to return to Argentina and would be cheap since he would be arriving on loan. Since this is the case, they are considering acquiring him, but only to enlist him for the Copa Libertadores. The question is, would he really have much playing time if he's only for the Copa and we have other forwards such as Falcao, Fabbiani, Rosales, and Rios?

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/muTECBnglqo&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/muTECBnglqo&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

The problems will start when the Boca fans start on River Plate fans. The riots will spread throughout the city and people will die.

What a bunch of cry babies though. If i just got relegated i would be angry, not crying like a little bitch. If the players were real men then maybe they wouldn't have got relegated!

Hopefully there will be some way to allow River to stay up. This sort of thing happens a lot in Argentina :D

-1 w/ that statement. River didn't do enough to remain up & that is why they are going down. They know the rules & couldn't get the job done.

The rules were actually designed for teams like River to stay up...but we went down anyway, it was unavoidable at the end. This was an institutional crisis that went from the bottom to the top. It could be studied.
In a way I think it may be better this way than for us to have had to battle relegation again next year. This way I hope we ascend next year and start from 0 to return to what we once were.

River are still the greatest club in Argentinian football, whatever Boca do in the next year or so. Fuck Boca!!!

Passarella is the president for now. Apparently he was in the dressing room on Sunday deciding the formation and tactics, though I'm not sure how seriously I would take those reports.
The institution was ruined when he took over from Aguilar. We need serious change to return to the top. We can do it because our youth system continues to produce the top class in the country. But we sell them, or the rights to their eventual European contracts, usually before they even debut on the first team. So wrong.

Sorry my mistake. Confused Cappa with Passarella. Don't ask how. :o
