Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze could be set for a shock comeback against Sunderland on Friday.

The Argentine left back has not played since rupturing cruciate ligaments back in September, but Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he could be called upon to help United in their push for the title.

The news comes as a sharp contrast to recent statements by both the player and manager, who had indicated that he would be struggling to be fit in time for this summer's World Cup.

Ferguson had also said that he would be reluctant to gamble on Heinze with the Premiership title still up for grabs.

However, he has been impressed by the 27-year-old's attitude in training, and now looks set to unleash a hungry Heinze in the must-win game at home to Sunderland.

"Gaby has been training for three weeks now and he is looking fantastic," Ferguson commented.

"He has been tackling like a tiger, has shown great energy in training and his enthusiasm is infectious.

"He is very close and I might just give him a go against Sunderland on Friday."

We'll need him against Chelsea.

I hope he's up to it if he comes back, that's awfully quick for that injury.

With the "tackling like a tiger" comment it looks like he's already back in situations that could do damage so may as well be in doing it for real where it matters.

It amazes me how quickly players come back from this injury, I had the same 5 or 6 years ago and the surgeon said I shouldn't return to playing for a year to let the bone grafting shore itself up. Obviously my doctor was either extremely cautious or the procedure and rehabs have changed much since. I'm sure he's had a few more benefits than I was privvy to :)

I'm so excited for Gabby's return, he'll get a hero's welcome back to OT. I don't want him to rush it, and I want to make sure he's fully ready to come back..and I'm glad he'll be at Germany this summer :D

He should start just for 10-20 minutes, cause he is coming back after serious injury, and rushing him back could be the worst thing for him (just remember Wes Brown)

i think ferguson should put heinze in the subs for chelsea game. no need to rush him man. man utd defense is doing well right now. i can't believe vidic's keeping brown off the starting line-up man. anyways, i think vidic is doing good in the center half.

Excellent news.

I agree that the game with Sunderland could be a "soft" start for Gabriel ... a way to gradually take him to his best form.

As to the quickness of recovery ... there are 3 things involved here Jason ... these peeps are athletes, which makes their comeback a lot easier (not that you are not one); they go to surgery with the best surgeons on the issue, which includes the latest advances in medicine (not that your doc wasn't good); and the fact that thru the rehab, players are monitored and aided by trainers on a daily basis (not that you can't afford them :D ).

It's very spectacular news. Our Back-Line is really good now. Gary Neville has superb form. Lots of crosses, nice tackles. Vidic is playing very well too. Rio is in crucial form, Silvestre is trying to book a place in defence. Brown back from injury, and of course Gabriel. Ohhhh. I am so happy:) everything is going to better ... Glory Man United!

I think, he should play on friday against Sunderland. 20 minutes will be enough for now:)

Gary-Rio-Vidic-Gabi

Now *that* is a back line to be proud of.

If only we could add a central midfielder (or two) we'd be a competitive force again.

Add Diarra as the CDM (Please Fergie buy Diarra and not an unproved one, not that I doubt you, but we need a world-class mid-fielder NOW)

Please Fergie ignore The Rock, and his willingness to dump 25 million on a player that isn't even close to the class of Rooney.

If you want to pay Rooney-kind of money, then I want the same influence and work rate, and goal productivity. Diarra isn't worth it.

"If we need a world class player, then we'll get him and provide the best deal," he told BBC Radio Five Live. "What we must do which we've not always done is get the best value deal."

not only that the subs are fantastic. Brown, Bardsley, Pique, Evra, Silvestre - now that is depth. Next year we are barely going to give up a goal. i'm excited.

Gabby's playing with the reserves, should be back to first team soon hopefully!

Heinze begins return with reserves run out

Gabriel Heinze showed no obvious signs of rustiness as he played over an hour for Manchester United's reserves against Aston Villa at the Lamb Ground in Tamworth on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Argentinian suffered ruptured cruciate ligaments in the Red Devils' Champions League match away to Villarreal in September and it was initially feared he was out for the season and would also miss the World Cup.

But Heinze, who has been back in training with the first team for four weeks, put in a sharp and tenacious display for United's second string before he came off in the second half.

He made a number of important interceptions, including one vital clearance while falling backwards in the 37th minute after United goalkeeper Luke Steele parried a shot.

Kieran Richardson also featured as he continued his recovery from a foot injury suffered in the win over Birmingham last month. The England international played 62 minutes before he was replaced by Jamie Mullan, shortly before Heinze made his exit.

Quinton Fortune, battling back from yet another injury, was involved, having not played for the first team all season. He underwent surgery on his knee last December.

United's 1-0 win, thanks to a Frazer Campbell goal in the first half, all but ensures back-to-back Premier Reserve League titles.

United old boy Eric Djemba-Djemba was in the Villa line-up, the Cameroon midfielder having not played for the first team since October after he was critical of manager David O'Leary.

that's great news, and sounds like he did quite well out there. hopefully he'll be back on the left side for us very soon ;)

(and I must admit, I had a bit of a chuckle when I read the last part about Djemba-Djemba :p)
