I like some of their players, but Figo is two years to old, and they dont have the depth. But the coach, the coach will take them far. I think they could make it to the final 8, but no farther. Perhaps an underdog chance at the round of 4, but i think its going to be coaching if that will take them that far, not players.
Round of 8 is my bet.

dont count them out, thats for sure.. only a fool would do that. their qualifying campaign was very succesfull and they have tons of talent and experience. paulo ferreira, carvalho, ronaldo, deco, maniche, nuno gomes, rui costa (if hes still playing), figo... they will be tough to knock out.

Deco is their creative midfielder....however I think Simao is their best. Figo And Rui Costa are old...Portugal does not need rely on them. Maniche hasnt been too impressive with Chelsea, I remember him from his goal in the last Euro.

With regards to the thread topic. I had all the hope and faith in the world a couple of weeks ago. Yet since the Jorge Andrade injury, our defensive soldado and one of the best CB's in the world, I am not as confident as I once was. Meira is an excellent CB as well but he doesn't have the Speed, grit and determination of Jorge Andrade.
I keep my faith though:D

Deco, hes the catalyist...but I would argue that Ronaldo is just as important as Deco.
Simao...is definitly not our best player or even Winger for that matter. Ronaldo, Figo, and Ricardo Quaresma are all better then him. Simao proboly won't even touch the field if he does manage to make it over Boa Morte in the final selection of the Seleccao.

barcalove, I believe Rui Costa announced his retirement. Andrade's absence hurts big time!
Portugal has matured since the last World Cup and they will come into this World Cup with the same "darkhorse favorites" as in 2002. It takes such an experience for players to realize what it takes to win, and they proved it, when they have their backs against the wall versus Spain and England in EURO 2004.
Let us just hope that they get out of the first round this time.
First of all, much respect to Luis Felipe Scolari since he has helped Portugal get their act together. Portugal has always played decent football but internal politics has always destroyed their chances even before the competitions start.
Now that they are gelling, I am positive that they will make it much further than in '02.:) My guess is final 8 at least, but it will all depend on how they start the first round.
Portugal has a very good team. We have found decent replacements for Figo (Ronaldo) and for Rui Costa (Deco) but they need more help up front. Pauleta normally does a good job and Nuno Gomes has his moments but still need some improvement up front. Our defence is also strong.
Forca Portugal!

I think this is our year! I hope it is anyway, but I agree with homie who was worried about Andrade, he was a rock in our defence and without him we're not as strong, but forcá Portugal.
With Simao, Ronaldo, Quaresma, we can go forward well, but we really lack a super striker... man, if only Eusebio was around now and in his prime..

They've got a tough group. Iran and Mexico aren't pushovers.
Making it to the last 8 would be doing very well in my opinion.

portugal has a good coach, and that will speak wonders for your advancment in the knockout rounds. I think Portugal will do well, but not exeptionally so. They'll beat the teams they are supposed to beat, because Scolari will have prepared them properly, and might get one underdog win before getting knocked out of the tourney.
after watching the euro2k4 final, which was very exciteing btw!(even though the team i was cheering for lost), i think it will go a long ways to spurring those players on in the WC.

Andrade is making a speedy recovery and will might be back in time for the WC.
As for our chances, Pauleta seems to be doing well in France at the moment, hopefully he can find that extra bit of confidence and have a succesful World Cup.

Yo don't tease me like that.....how you know Jorge Andrade is making a speedy recorvery? Show me some links, cause hes one of my favorite players on the Seleccao. With him in the Lineup our chances only increase!

Yes, i've only seen one PSG game in the past few months - against Bordeaux - He was great - 2 beautiful header goals, + a PK, a nice hat trick for him. He looked like he was on fire - confident. Which is great, cause at Euro 2004 he was practically invisible. I'm not completely sure - but I don't think he scored a single goal in the tournament.. (did he?)
Here's hoping he'll keep it going =)

He was invisable. Didnt score at all, not one single goal. Alot of us believe that if Pauleta manages to score at least 3 goals during the tournament. Portugal stand a very good chance of winning, but Pauleta needs to leave his mark.

Portugal should qualify to the last 16 but this is Mondial and looking back to year 2002 everyone know how difficult it is.
I wanna remind you group with Portugal, South Korea, Poland and USA.
European teams were considered as favourites and they both failed.
Now IT is said that african teams like Angola are weak. Watching African Nations Cup first impression tells they really are. But remember that they will be stronger in june. Why? They still look for players with their national roots.
Iran can be also surprise this summer. This is more experienced team with talented players. Some of them remember France 98.
Portugal's group doesn't seem tough but if you think a bit more...
Anyway the opponent in last 16 will be very strong.
Good luck Portugal. Mondial played in Europe can be advantage for european teams.

I like our group. I find Portugal plays beter against more difficult teams, and struggles against lower class teams. So the group that they drew against was perfect in my opinion.
Mexico is a highly ranked, technically sound side.
Iran is a very creative, offesively dangerous side who have a couple players that can create.
Angola, they are going to be playing with alot of heart and desire for this one. Portugal will not take this game lightly, espically because its a first game.

Portugal are a really good team its hard to decide whether we'll win or lose against them we do play a similar formation. Im more worried about Iran though

Sorry man, I can't find the link anymore but I it was also on RTP. There is a chance Andrade might be ready for the WC, obviously not 100% but hes having a wuick recovery. Regardless if he's ready or not Andrade will travel with the team. :D

I think Andrade at 80...or even 75 percent might be better then Meira...maybe. Actually I dont know, Meira is pretty good.

honestly no offense and all but i think ghana has a better chance of winning the whole thing b/c what has portugal done in the WC in the last 12 yrs. however that being said i think ghana can make some noise this yr as a dark horse i think a top 8 rnd would be accurate maybe final 4 champions.. yeah right
I honestly think Portugal with their current crop of players and with a great manager has as much chance of winning the thing as any other big European Nation.
Still think Argentina and Brazil are top of the crop though.

Who is this Andrade guy and what's the big deal about him?

I'm sorry to say it but Angola aren't looking very good.
Unless they improve dramatically, they'll bow out of the group.
In their recent friendly with Korea they played some good football for very short spells so I know they have to ability but overall they got hammered.
They were just lucky Korea had some very poor for passing in the final third of the field.
I pick Portugal to win that game BUT, Portugal vs. Angola is a derby game for the Angolan's (colonization) and it's the one they will be looking forward to all tournament so a draw is probably the most likely outcome.

Defensive Soldado. He plays for Deportiva De Corona in the Spanish Primeira. It definitly a top 3 Center Back in the World. Fast, Strong, extremely smart.

You def wont be seeing Jorge Andrade on the feild for the world cup, hes already been ruled out, replacements mentioned have been Tonel and Caneira from Sporting and Ricardo Rocha from Benfica. I think he should be replaced by Pedro Emanuelle (im not biased), he has been a regular starter in the Porto defence which has the least goals conceded in europe!! Thats gotta count for something........
I think Portugal will do well, i hope we make it at least to the final 8, defence and midfield are solid but i worry about our firepower up front, if Pauleta doesnt fire who else is there? never rated Nuno Gomes highly, Postiga doesnt seem to be in the best form......maybe BoaMorte but hes more of a wide player.
Dont like Scolari much, kinda wish hed taken the england job so we could go shopping for a new coach.

Portugal is a very good team and definitely a strong contender to win the world cup with the talented players and coach they have....
IMO portugal should make to the semi-finals....
Portugal will win their group and will then have to face the runner up of Group C (which if things happen as they should - will be either Holland or Argentina, although I wouldn't count out Serbia).
I would predict Holland finishing 2nd behind the Argies, and then Holland knocking out Portugal.
It's just too bad for Portugal that their opponents will come from the true group of death (as opposed to Group E).

Ronaldo is definetly the most important player for Portugal this summer, he must have a good tournament if Portugal are to go far.

Portugal beat Holland at the euros.........although we did have the home crowd advantage then, i think we could do it again:cool:

So yeah, advantage portugal.

I felt that Portugal did very little in their group to suggest that they could bother the top teams this time round. They have some remarkable talent, but there's something missing. It could just be Deco eh?
But seriously, I reckon if they make it to the second round - which is likely, that's about as far as they'll get.

I'm going to have to agree. I was suprised to see portugal's performance in their qualifiers lacking something. Giving up late goals and just all around making matches out of games that should've been easy to win. I mean seriously "azkebstian?" Or however you spell it. However i think if the missing piece in their game is found soon they can be serious contenders for at least the quarters/semis.
