back to DONG again and i feel like i'm hijacking the thread here :D
yes he scored in one of the pre-season matches, if i'm not mistaken it might've been the same one that Park scored in. anyway i don't think they just bought him as a marketing tool. he's far too young and they wouldn't buy a marketing tool and loan him off to antwerp now would they? o'shea spent time at antwerp too. it's a feeder club isn't it? so United send their players there and if they're good enough (as i've heard that Dong is) they'll be drafted into the reserves prob. i remember they bought a Qatari and loaned him off to antwerp as well. haven't heard of him since. but yeah i've heard a lot about Dong and would like to see him play before passing judgement on him.

In 2005, he was in the shortlist for the FIFPro Young player of the Year (along with Rooney,C.Rynaldo,Robben). Then again, so was Freddy Adu.
Btw,Dong is in the squad for the SA tour and I'm sure he will get some game time as Rooney isn't part of the squad.I believe he will return to Belgium after the tour,as he doesn't have a WP.
EDIT:http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=374088&cc=5739
Looks like Dong will get the WP in December

right now he has 52 caps for antwerp with 25 goals.
during the SA tour he scored the winner for United in a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs.

He still has a lot things to learn if he wants to play in EPL,but I think he`s mentally strong enough to cope all this.
Anyway he`s considered as the most talented young player by Chinese press.
My impression about him is he`s very quick, and very confident with ball, same type of Walcott.

the problem with his delay to play in the Prem is because of his work permit, China doesn't allow dual nationality, so there's no way he'll try to get a Belgium passport so to become EU citizen to play for Utd (he won't be able to play for China anymore if he does that) so he'll have to wait to play enough times for the National Team then apply for his work permit.
but can't wait for him to make history for Utd tho'.

that article was from July  and I read it at the time also but straight away knew it's not probable.
as the article said Dong qualifies for a European passport soon, but if he takes it he's won't be able to play for China, that's a BIG no no.
Fergie prolly didn't know no dual nationality for chinese, so he just assumed Dong's in the same situation as any/many other potential young overseas players.

but it's belgian second division he plays in, not the first division
(equal to what championship is for england)
that would be some sloppy sloppy defending to be first division (though the belgian league sucks :) )

Any news on this guy coming back? I really wanted to see him play in OT in a Man Utd shirt before I leave this summer for good, but doesn't look like it's happening :(

New United deal for Dong
how funny does that sounds
Chinese international Dong Fangzhou has signed a new contract at Manchester United and will now begin his Premiership career in earnest.
The striker has been farmed out to United's feeder club Royal Antwerp for the last two-and-a-half years, but was awarded a work permit in December and has now been welcomed into Sir Alex Ferguson's first team squad.
Dong has been handed a new deal that lasts until 2010 and will wear the number 21 shirt at Old Trafford as he looks to become the first Chinese player to make a senior appearance for The Red Devils.
His contribution since arriving from Dalian Shide in January 2004 has been restricted to pre-season tours, but Ferguson insists Dong has a role to play at United for the foreseeable future.
"We're all excited he has eventually arrived and can start playing," Ferguson told the club's official website.
"He sacrificed two-and-a-half years at Royal Antwerp, which showed great patience and determination.
"He is quick and athletic and he can only improve by training with the first team squad here."

Way out of his depth at United. He's been OK in the reserves but he's not good enough to be a regular in United's first team. Obviously been brought in to maximise the marketing of United in China.

he isnt good enough ..
he did well for the reserves , but even there eagles was much better than him ..
welbeck and macheda (who is still in the academy) challenge him for a spot in the reserves starting XI ..
he will improve drastically and be in the first XI next season ..
