I've been keeping track of Al-ahly's progress in the CAF Champions League. They just drew 0-0 with Renaciemento (I can't find a consistent spelling of that name) on the first leg of the third round. They'll be playing at home on the next leg.
http://championsleague.mtnfootball.com/live/index.php is the most complete site on African football I've found so far but it's not updated with this round's results yet. I found them here - http://www.weltfussball.de/spielplan.php?Thema=622&Liga=37&s_id=1842&p_id=5760&r_id=0&x=20&y=10

I think egyptian players are great, they can be better if they had a better sports minister and better coaches that allowed them to play for european clubs. Egypt is like brazil people play soccer in the street everywhere and are really good but never get recognized due to the bribery of scouts that dont really do their jobs. Also another problem is that egyptian have a really bad ego as they are the best in the country they think they are the best when they go to europe and takes awhile to get over their ego.
sorry about the lengthy post. I am an egyptian fan, and this is only my opnion, would like to hear what u guys think

i agree with you there, i went to egypt in the summer and went to play football and people were suprised by how defensive i was, they play with skills and speed and on the streets. considering they have had no coaching etc theyre great.
also all the greatest egyptian scouts looked for thier players in urban areas and streets, setting up mock matches etc. there was a legendary one my dad mentioned and apparently at one point most the egypt NT were scouted by them.

After seeing how badly Egypt were outplayed by the Ivory Coast in the World Cup Qualifier in Abidjan I was thinking they weren't a very good team.
Then they won the Cup of Nations. That changed my mind.
But, Aruna Dindane wasn't there for the Cup of Nations final and he was the one that gave them the most problems in Abidjan. So who knows.
Al Ahly was pretty disappointing at the Club World Championship. After 57 games unbeaten in all competitions they got suckered by 1 Al Ittihad goal. I was really disappointed. Then they played pretty well against Sydney FC and gave me some faith in their ability......until they lost that game too.
They look like a quality side all the same so let's see what they can do this time around.

the thing with egypt is we dont like toplay players like mido and zidan becaus etheyre different. they stand ouit from the rest and are treated like stars so we dont field them too often. if i was mido i would be pissed off too, zidan also has reason to be pissed of as he is banned by shehata from playin for egypt till he leaves because he was sent a call up at midnight xmas day, there was noone in the club so no-one responded.
too unproffessional.
which brings me to my next point. why do egyptian teams not let young talents leave to go elsewhere? egypt under 21 are WC and have achieved alot. they put huge procetags on them so nobody signs them as they arent worth the risk. as a result they allplay in the egyptian league. we should be a bit more like ivory coast or cameroon and let our players go to europe for cgeaper so they can establish themselves.

hi guys it is gr8 thing to see here a topic about egyption football i hope to go on and not being closed soon i will give you some information about footabll in egypt and will send you news about its football daily,
first about football in egypt from yahoo.com in sports
ppl know us as the (( Pharaohs ))
Egypt has the distinction of being the first African country to participate at the finals of the FIFA World Cup™. That was in 1934, when the Pharaohs benefited from Turkey's withdrawal and qualified after beating Palestine by an 11-2 aggregate score.
Their FIFA World Cup campaign in Italy lasted only one game though, as a 4-2 defeat against Hungary sent the North Africans crashing out of the competition.
As the Egyptians were the only African member of FIFA at that stage (Sudan followed shortly afterwards), they were forced to qualify for the finals via Asia or Europe. In 1938, the Egyptians withdrew from their qualifying matches against Romania, and did not attempt to qualify again until 1954. That year, they lost 2-1 and 5-1 to Italy, and the next they withdrew from their match-up with Israel.
Egyptian supporters had to wait 56 long years to play their second game at the finals of the FIFA World Cup. Drawn into arguably the most difficult group at the finals of Italy '90 with England, the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland, the Egyptians held the Dutch and Irish to draws before bowing out of the competition after losing their final group match 1-0 against England.
Coached by former international midfielder Mohsen Saleh, the Pharaohs certainly look strong enough to challenge for a place in Germany in 2006. Upfront, they have one of the biggest names in African football – Ahmed Hossam, who is known simply as Mido. The youngster moved from Ajax Amsterdam to Olympique Marseille at the beginning of the 2003/4 season and has continued to show the kind of form that made him the CAF Best African Young Player of the Year 2002.
Saleh's major worry remains experienced captain Hany Ramzy, who is facing a race against time to recover from injury and rejoin the team. His presence in the Egyptian squad at the Cup of Nations in January and February remains doubtful, but he is an essential part of Saleh's team that will attempt to take Egypt to the FIFA World Cup finals for the third time in their history.
Bitterly disappointed at having failed to guide Egypt beyond the first round of the African Cup of Nations 2004, Mohsen Saleh – along with the majority of federation officials – fell on his sword just after the Tunisian tournament. The federation promptly secured the services of former Italy player Marco Tardelli for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ qualifying campaign.
But in the face of difficult working conditions created by the reluctance of certain players and criticism from the Egyptian press, the former Juventus star opted to throw in the towel. Now a long way off the pace in the race for Germany 2006, the Pharaohs need to rapidly rediscover peace and tranquillity in order to make up the lost ground.

The history of Al-Ahly Club needs more than just a page to be mentioned. Here are what you need to know about the club :
Established: April 1907

Established in 1907. It is one of the oldest Egyptian clubs. The original idea came from Edrees Rageb Pasha, Omar Sultan Pasha, Ismaeel Serry, Abdul El Khalek Tharwat, Omar Lotfi, and Ameen Sammy. They came together with idea to establish a club for high school students to spend their spare time. They decided to establish a company with five thousand Egyptian Pounds. They chose El-Gezirah as headquarter and paid one third of the capital and borrowed the rest from El-Ahly bank. Ismaeel Pasha Serry had designed the building and gave the construction job to Yussef Afandi Aly for a price of LE2,250.
A name of The Ahly Club for Exercise was given to it and then was changed to Al Ahly Club for physical exercise after one year. The national hero "Saad Saghlool" was the first president of the club for one year. Then followed by Aziz Pasha Ezat for eight years, Abdul Khalik Tharwat for for eight years, Gaffar Pasha for four years, Ahmed Hassanean Pasha for two years, Ahmad Aboud Pasha for 14 years. During which Al Ahly has won nine consequtive tournaments during 1947-1956.Then came Abdul Mohsen Mortagi from 1965 to 1967. Followed by Dr. Ibrahim ElWakeel till 1973. El Fareek Mortaga returned till 1980, followed by Saleh Seleem who took over the presidency and considered the first player taking over this top executive position. In 1988 Abdu Saleh Elwahsh became the president. The Shareholders decided to lay him off. Since then Saleh Seleem returned back as president again and remained in this position till present.

Ekrami and Saied out of Spain's trip
Egypt manager Hassan Shehata has ruled out Feyenoord keeper Sherif Ekrami and Masri defender Hany Saied from the 21-man squad chosen for the friendly against Spain in the Spanish city of Elche on Sunday.
Uncapped Sherif Al-Beyali Arab Contractors, Mahmoud Fathalla of Ghazl Mahalla, and Mohamed 'Hamada' Youssef of Ittihad Alexandria were also omitted from the squad that is due to travel to Spain on Monday.

Mounsour sentenced for six months in jail
An Egyptian court sentenced Zamalek president Mortada Mansour for six months in jail on Saturday on the charge of smearing his Ahli counterpart, Hassan Hamdi.
The Zamalek president, who publicly offended Hamdi after the clubs’ semi-final in the African Champions League last season on-air, appealed the ruling as soon as it was announced.
Mansour held a press conference during which he attributed the club’s ongoing problems to Egyptian Council for Sports president Hassan Sakr’s choice of Zamalek board members.
Mansour also stressed that he refused the club board’s decision to allow vice president Raouf Gasser to sign on any documents if the Zamalek first-man refused to, and insisted that it was against the club’s regulations.
Former Zamalek treasurer Mamdouh Abbass also faced accusations from Mansour that he was the one responsible for duo Tarek Al-Saied and Mohamed Sadik’s move to Ahli, due to his failure to negotiate new deals with the players.
Nevertheless, Mansour insisted that Zamalek were in no need for Al-Saied and demanded that the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) bar Sedik after “conspiring with Ahli”, during their final match that ended in a 2-0 victory for the latter, according to him.
The Zamalek president concluded by revealing that Ittihad Jeddah president Mansour Al-Balwi is going to donate the sum of two substantial deals to the Egyptian club during the coming few days.
An unnamed businessman is also going to support Zamalek’s bid for a new deal that would “shake the entire Ahli foundation,” as Mansour described.

Enppi sign Al-Muhammadi and Metwalli
Enppi have announced signing Ghazl Mahalla duo Reda Metwalli and Ahmed Al-Muhammadi on a five-year deal for 2.5-million EGP.
Al-Muhammadi and Metwalli signed for Enppi on Saturday at the club headquarters, Enppi football director Alaa Abdel-Sadek told FilGoal.com.
Ghazl Mahalla will receive 2.5-million EGP to release the players, whose fees have yet to be disclosed.
Metwalli, now 23 years old, excelled with the Egypt U-20 team that played in the 2003 FIFA U-20 World Cup in UAE and scored a goal against Argentina in the round of 16, before going on to scoring seven goals last season and becoming Ghazl Mahalla’s top-scorer.
Al-Muhammadi, on the other hand, scored two crucial goals for his side in the Egyptian league this season.
His first goal was in Ghazl Mahalla’s match against Ahli, while his second goal in Koroum’s net proved critical for the club, given that it saved them from relegation to the second-division.
Al-Muhammadi also scored an own-goal in the club’s match against Enppi in the league round-one

Basri named Arab Contractors boss
Taha Basri has been appointed Arab Contractors new manager replacing Mohamed Radwan, the Cairo club said on Sunday.
"Basri will take over after the Egyptian Cup finishes," Arab Contractors chairman Ibrahim Mehleb told FilGoal.com.
The former Zamalek star has been in charge of Enppi since 2000 but he announced in April that he will quit the post at the end of the season.
Under Basri, Enppi has won the Egyptian Cup, qualified to the Arab Champions League (ACL) finals and finished as the Egyptian League runners-up last season.
Meanwhile, Arab Contractors have signed Ittihad players Omar Islam, Samir Ashour, Sherif Ghazala and Mohamed 'Hamada' Youssef for undisclosed fees.
Arab Contractors finished the 2005-2006 campaign in ninth spot with 28 points, only two points ahead of the relegation zone.

GHALY STAYING AT SPURS
EP asked Ghaly if he was aware of the rumours about him leaving Spurs before even making his first team debut. "This is very untrue. Fabrication at its best," said the tenacious midfielder.
He went on to add: "I was injured for quite some time and needed time to get back to fitness. Everybody knew that it would have been unwise to rush me back into competitive games before I am totally ready.
"I will start the preseason training with the lads just like everybody else," ensured Ghaly.
EP also asked the player about his relationship with manager Martin Jol. Ghaly was quick to praise his boss saying: "I can't wait to play under his command. We deserved a Champions League spot this season and lots of credit should go to him. Throughout my time in London he has been encouraging me to regain my fitness, which I have done."
Ghaly also gave EgyptianPlayers.com his comments on Mido's situation with the London based side. "I have always wanted to play with Mido at a European club. We could have done so well for the team. We've played a lot together for Egypt and we are close friends on and off the pitch," answered the midfielder.
"Mido's performances with Spurs were of a high standard because he is a player of high calibre, but I am not going to comment on the manager's decision not to go for him in the market.
"Mido wanted to stay with the team. That's all I can say."
About where Mido will be heading next, Ghaly opined: " I think he will go back to Rome. He is a professional player who is under contract. I wish him success and I personally believe that he will answer his critics well."
EP asked Hossam about his time in Egypt and he is currently enjoying his summer vacation on the golden beaches of Sinai. "I want to spend more time with my family, especially after my recent break-up with my fiancée."

Lokomotiv demand $1.7-million for Zaki
A Lokomotiv Moscow delegation has arrived in Cairo on Monday to open talks with Egyptian giants Ahli and Zamalek regarding striker Amr Zaki for $1.7-million.
Zamalek officials met the Russian delegation after their arrival, while Ahli are still seeking an appointment to try and land the former Enppi star, informed sources told FilGoal.com exclusively on Monday.
Ahli have already tried to sign Zaki on a loan deal from Lokomotiv, but the Russian outfit refused, given their insistence on getting back the exact fee, $1.7-million, they had paid to sign the talented striker, who excelled with Egypt in their winning African Cup of Nations (ACN) campaign in February.
Zaki sustained an injury at the beginning of his career with Lokomotiv in mid-march that saw him sidelined and cut short his future in Russia.

Vengada considers coaching Olympic team as new challenge
Zamalek former coach Eduardo “Nelo” Vengada insisted that coaching the Olympic team is a new challenge for him, and said that knowing all about Egyptian soccer played a part in driving him to accept the offer.
“My negotiations with the EFA president didn’t last long and I accepted the offer immediately,” Vengada said in a press conference in the EFA headquarters on Monday.
The Egyptian FA held the press conference to reveal both Vengada and assistant coach Arnaldo Carvalho’s contract details.
The Portoguese head coach will receive a $19,000 monthly salary, while Carvalho will get only $6,000.
“Vengada is the right person for this job, he has a host of Egyptian and regional accomplishments and has some good experience in dealing with this specific age range,” EFA president Samir Zaher said.
Vengada is scheduled to takeover his new team in July after settling personal details in Portugal.
Zaher also said that the EFA were taking their time in choosing Vengada’s coaching staff to avoid any future misunderstandings between them.
Both Vengada and Carvalho contracts will expire after the qualifying rounds for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and will be renewed on condition that Egypt qualifies.
Vengada guided Zamalek to be crowned Egyptian champions in the 2003/2004 season before being sacked.

“I got an urgent call from Rizespor officials on Monday asking me to return to Turkey as soon as possible to negotiate a contract-extension,” Al-Tabie told FilGoal.com exclusively on Monday.

The Masri board have agreed during their last meeting to allow Al-Safti to move either to Zamalek or Ismaili, who have already started negotiating a deal, FilGoal learnt on Monday.

I thought fathi played really well actually, i'm quite surprized with him overall.
He was supposed to have lots of potential at abt 19/20, but it never went anywhere and he stayed with Ismaili but somehow he's managed to get himself at Sheffield United, which is surprizing. If i would pick Egyptian players to succeed or go abroad in England he definitely wouldn't be top of the list.
Did anyone see him after he came on against tottenham on saturday?

Dirtycheat
17-02-2007, 08:27 AM
we actually have alot, the problem is the big clubs dont want to sell anyone, not the youngsters and not the national team players.
they are too rich to sell for money and there is no other real benefit from selling. if we had a poorer league you would see loads of player in europe.
take ramzy for instance, he rejected a move to reading for money in saudi arbia etc etc.
the only reason ghaly is at spurs is because he was rejected at youth level and now he has played for 2 top clubs. egypt dont lack the players, we just lak the common sense to sell players for their future and their sake and ther careers
rOOnaldo86
20-02-2007, 03:39 PM
Yeah thats definitly true. What pisses me off the most tho, is players that leave and come back, or clubs that try to buy them back.
Best example is Amr Zaki and Hosni Abd-Raboh. Both great players but they can't expect to leave and hit it off in one year, look how long Ghaly had to wait.
Especially Amr Zaki, that guy could be a monster in the PL, he's just a fool, making the easy decision.

Shame on me. My first post here, so my 1000th post should be here. :D
Probably the biggest issue in Egypt today since ACN is Essam El Hadari's situation and his so called flight to Switzerland. Al Ahli had recieved an official offer from FC Thun and officials from the club came to Cairo after ACN to bring negotiations to action. But the deal was rejected as usual and Al Ahli said the offer was about 400000 € or so.
Two days ago he 'fled' to Switzerland to join the club there and no one knows anything about anything. Many reports said that the real offer was about € 1,3 million but Ahli did hide the real value to keep him for them.
Well, to be realistic Essam is 35 now, what is he going to do there? I mean he did well in 2008 but it wasn't his top and if he really wants to play abroad why he didn't do that in 2002 or 2003 or 2005? It'd be better to stay here and end his career with the club he loves and served all his life.

btw, do you think hadary should have played?
Yeah I feel we did well. And don't forget that it was the first time we played 4-4-2 against a big team like Argentina.
I don't think playing Elhadari was a wise decision from Shehata because he didn't play any football from 10/2 the ACN final till the match day on 26/3. Not a short time which affected his fittnes and his performance consistency, and that was obvious in the 2nd goal and in that ball in the first half which Hani Saed saved it by his head.
Another thing is that the majority in Egypt are Ahli fans, and they hate him, so they didn't go to the stadium. That as you could see affected the attendance at the stadium, only 30000 or 35000 attended and many of them booed him whenever he touched the ball.
i know that now, i posted that post before the game :)

WTF is wrong with the Zamalek President???
He tried to have his bodyguards physically attack Zaki and now says he won't let him leave the club under any circumstances?
What an asshole!
Zamalek chairman and Amr Zaki almost come to blows!

Just when you thought that the relationship between Amr Zaki and his chairman couldn't get any worse, it does!
Zaki has been trying to secure his transfer to Wigan for a very, very long time, and the chairman keeps putting more obstacles in his way.
At the moment, the prolific striker is attempting to persuade the Egyptian FA to cancel his contract with Zamalek, some small matter like not receiving wages for six months apparently, so that he can negotiate his own move to Wigan.
Steve Bruce has been extremely patient but i think even he is now getting exasperated with the Zamalek chairman too.
Anyway, in the latest instalment of the Zaki saga came today when Zaki went to the club to discuss the impending (?) transfer. This is what Zaki said after the meeting:
"I told him I am ready to play against Ahli (in the Champions League) and move after the elections," Zaki told reporters.
"But I was surprised when he told me that the club will not allow me to leave under any circumstances."
"He then got angry and swore at me. Things got worse when his bodyguards were about to beat me up!"
Zaki's agent Nader Shawki, who was also present at the meeting, expressed his annoyance with the incident.
"I have never witnessed something like that in football, it’s a shame to see such acts coming from the president of a big club like Zamalek," he said.

Looks like Zaki is FINALLY going to be a Wigan player! I am psyched about this transfer. He looks ready to bulldoze defenders.

Zaki is doing immensly well for Wigan. 2 years ago when i was in egypt during the summer i saw him play and told my cousins that aside from zidan he is egypt's best striker and they took the piss.
He has settled down so well at wigan, i honestly didnt expect that. Good on him though, i hope he keeps that form for egypt.
As for the Congo game, we have Shawky out, Mido a doubt and Zidan banned from playing for egypt. Still, it should be a great game, we need to win it.
