Steven Gerrard has capped another brilliant season at Anfield by being named the PFA Player of the Year by his fellow professionals.
At a gala ceremony in London's Grosvenor House Hotel this evening, the Liverpool captain beat off competition from Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Thierry Henry, John Terry and Joe Cole to land the top honour.
The award finishes off a sensational weekend for Gerrard after he helped Liverpool into the FA Cup final with an excellent display against Chelsea yesterday.
With 19 goals to his name, Gerrard currently sits at the top of the goalscoring charts at Anfield and has played an inspirational role in the Reds' securing Champions League football for next season with three games to spare.
Manchester United's Wayne Rooney won the Young Player of the Year award.

Who did you feel deserved it, then? From an unbiased point of view, just in case you'll let your Man U. loyalty get in the way.
I think Gerrard makes a good receiver of the award because he's awesome all-around. He can play in almost any position and still do moderately well at it. He can defend, pass, shoot, dribble, etc. And, he's scored 19 goals. Not a bad tally, if I may say so.
Obviously, there have been other fantastic players in the Premiership as well, such as Lampard, Terry, and Henry. But I guess the majority decided the Gerrard deserved it more than the others did.
And in breaking news ... Arjen Robben was given the award for best acting for season 05-06. Drogba reported to be upset at his team mate. :D

classic. he shouldn't despair though - he still has a career in gaellic or american football ahead of him, since he's so good at playing with his hands ;]
to the tune of "He's got the whole world in his hands":
He only scooores with his hands
He only scooores with his hands
Oh how he scoores with his hands
Didier Drogba!
this was sung in my local lfc pub during the semi to much acclaim ;]

Well lets hope he is consistent in WC2006!
I doubt he will though unfortunately. Like most other Liverpool players in the past, he's never really produced the goods for England, not consistently anyway. Hopefully he can be played in his favoured attacking role, but that would more than likely be at the expense of Fat Frank, so unlikely to happen.....

Erickson does not know how to use him. If he knew, surely Gerrard can perform in WC as well. But I am not sure what impact he can make as a defensive midfielder.

I'm still confused how Hollywood could choose Reese Witherspoon over Arjen Robben for the Best Actress Award last month.

Nice to see Carra in the team of the season! He has been class for past 2 seasons without much acclaim.
Congrats to both Stevie and Rooney on their awards as well. For his age group you must say that Rooney's a class apart from the other nominees. So randy and funkdoctorspock who do you reckon should have won it? (out of the nominees of course)

Same for fibergrass.
I dont think steven gerrard deserved it.... but then when you have 4 misfiring strikers around you.... it gives you more recognition. If this award was only based on league performances then gerrard loses by a long way.

For me (and I'm being as neutral as possible) Gerrard has shown much more consistency this season than Lampard, and he's also played 80% of the matches out wide, which is completely not his natural position, but he's taken on the responsibility and played the best he can (and scored 19 goals to boot). That, to me, puts him above Lampard.

On top of gmh's arguments, in some games we are left asking where is Lampard? No matter how bad liverpool plays, Gerrard stamps some kind of authority into it. He doesn't go missing in some games, like Lampard. No offence to the player, he's a champion and extremely talented player, but if we are to reward consistency for this season, Gerrard was clearly but maybe marginally better than Lamps

I went to the same Highschool as Mark Viduka for like 2 years but then moved. Close but no Cigar, only because I rate Harry much more higher than Viduka.

Gerrard lol...gotta be kidding me...Henry for me carried Arsenal and hasnt disapointed while Lampard has been at his best during most of the season both i believe deserved it over Gerrard...With Henry winning it.
Henry:
Games: 29 - Goals: 33 - Assists:3
Lampard:
Games: 33 - Goals: 16 - Assists: 9
J.Cole:
Games: 31 - Goals: 7 - Assists: 3 (Clearly his best ever season)
Gerrard:
Games: 30 - Goals: 8 - Assists: 5 - 1 Red Card

yeh zaffo probably does, because in football stats mean everything doesnt it?- who cares about what a player contributes on top of stats in terms of just mere presence, support and leadership  and what do the players who voted know? truly they don't look through enough up websites to dig up stats and prove crappy points... fancy putting the "red card" alert next to Gerrard (that really means he had a shite season doesn't it, we are convinced *nods*) and Joe Cole - "clearly his best ever season", I admit he had a good season but sometimes your "best ever" season is simply not good enough to match it with others still...it's such a lame supporting argument to put next to a player's name....heskey can have his best ever season for goodness sake? why not put him up for nominations? no offence intended :) just venting my views too

Well gerrard recieved a red card unlike lamp and that so of corse they arnt going to that next to there name...Whats wrong with saying the truth about J.Cole? He has performed very well and better then 90% of people would have thought. It has been his best ever season to this date...next season could all be different though. Never said stats counted either i just posted them to show what everyone had done during the season in reguards to those areas.
Gerrard is a good leader and shows passion but so do alot of other players. Terry shows just as much Leadership, support and has the same presence that Gerrard does so why didnt he win?
Gerrard only looked as good as he does becasue he has crap strikers so he has to score goals which makes him more noticed...and a long with Carra and Alonso are the only players who stand out...

I assume you started following football when you discovered this site, in December 2005. Not a problem at all, you watch more games, learn about the tactics and strategies, positioning of players and all that stuff. Everyone was a n00b once so no worries :)

Henrys a striker, he's bound to score more goals, and what you still seem to fail to grasp is that it was voted for by the people who know more about the game than any of us, the ones who actually play it.

Thierry Henry basked in the glory of Arsenal securing a place in the Champions League final - and immediately hailed Steven Gerrard as being an inspiration to everyone at Highbury.
Arsene Wenger's men will face either Barcelona or AC Milan in Paris next month after a goalless draw with Villareal saw them progress 1-0 on aggregate.
Speaking immediately after the match in Spain, the Arsenal skipper was keen to pay tribute to Gerrard and congratulate the Liverpool midfielder on being named PFA Player of the Year at the weekend.
"What Steven Gerrard did last year in the Champions League has been an inspiration to us all," said Henry.
"I am so pleased he has been named Player of the Year. It's been a long time coming for him. I have so much respect for the guy and I want to congratulate him."

He definitely deserves it without a doubt. I think a lot of you saying he's not worthy are forgetting something -
I assume that last year's award would have been done around this same time BEFORE the champions league final. So Gerrard's performance back then in the final has probably been taken into consideration and helped him to win it this year...

I cant believe the crap going on here that Gerrard doesn't deserve the award.
Reading through these posts I wondered if everyone forgot how inspirational Gerrard was in last years CL final!! Thanks for reminding us Rob.
My goodness, it's been a long time coming, I think Gerrard has been a consistent player for such a long time and fully gets my vote.
Whether I'm a ManU fan or not, any idiot can see this season he's been a better all-round player than anyone else in the EPL.
There isn't a single thing he cant do, whereas the other candidates aren't as complete as Gerrard is.
You guys...
I'm happy Wayne Rooney got best young player and I'm sure one day will get the senior award, but this day belongs to Gerrard, well done.

Gerrard easily deserved the award as much as anyone else nominated, but lets not forget the liverpool team around him have also been outstanding. Theyve still got a few pieces missing before they can challenge for the title but their progress under benitez have been amazing despite a few missbuys :P
I really didnt want to see Terry get it again. I wont be convinced Terry deserves the praise hes getting until i see him put in some good displays for england in the wc. Terry shining for chelsea is like baros scoring for the czechs. How hard was it to shine when he had nedved get him free with the keeper 3-4 times a game? :P
Id rather have seen the award go to lampard last season. Without him constantly netting theyd have had to rely on drogba to score to win games ;D
