With 2 games to go, the race for a place in the Sudamericana 06 and Libertadores 07 is getting quite interesting.

The positions up to Round 17 of the Clausura are (Apertura 05 pts + Clausura 06 = Total points)

1- Boca 40 + 37 = 77
2- Gimnasia LP 37 + 29 = 66
3- River Plate 28 + 31 = 59
4- Lanus 23 + 33 = 56
5- Velez 33 + 23 = 56
6- Independiente 32 + 23 = 55
7- San Lorenzo 28 + 25 = 53
8- Newells 20 + 30 = 50
9- Banfield 28 + 22 = 50
10- Estudiantes 28 + 22 = 50

# of Argentinian teams that qualify to each tournament:

- Libertadores: 4 directly to group phase and 1 to play-offs. These are the 2 champs plus the top 2 teams in the aggregate points ... the 3rd team in the aggregate goes to play-offs. If there is a repeat champ (in this case if Boca is champ of the Clausura 06 too) then the top 3 aggregates go directly to the group stage and the 4th aggregate goes to the play-offs.
- Sudamericana: Boca & River + the next top 4

=================

So far, Boca is in the Libertadores 07 as they won the Apertura 05 ... and Gimnasia LP with 66 aggregate points are already qualified. If Boca stays in 1st in the Clausura, then the 4 that would qualify are (based on pts up to Round 17- played today):
Gimnasia LP 66 *(already qualified)
River Plate 59
Lanus 56
Velez 56

And the teams for the Sudamericana are:
Boca (reigning champ)
River (invited)
Gimnasia LP (unreachable- highest aggregate)
Lanus
Velez
Independiente

In the last 2 rounds, all of the listed teams still have a chance of making it to one of the cups. It will be quite interesting to see how this unfolds. :D

Remaining fixtures:

Round 18
Banfield v Argentinos
Newell's v Gimnasia LP

Independiente v Boca

Round 19

- Sudamericana: Boca & River + the next top 4

Wait, why do Boca Juniors and River Plate automatically make it? Is it because of past performances?

Both are "invited" to every tournie. :o

But also, the reigning champ qualifies to the following Sudamericana ... that is also the case for Boca, as they have won it back to back. :)

Thanks for breaking it down for us, Vip. It'll be interesting to see if some "unexpected" teams make it to the CL next year. :)

I'm sure this is yet another reason why almost everyone hates Boca Juniors (minus their fans, of course).

I remember hearing a Velez player saying that Boca Juniors have been "earmarked" to win the title, that the referees even want them to win.

Did you watch the Copa Sudamericana final last season? The ref was blatantly biased; it was disgusting. Typical, though, of a lot of South American refs.

I would tend to strongly disagree with this. Boca will be playing the last and next Sudamericanas as reigning champ, who automatically qualifies, and opens a spot to another Argentinian team this year.

Since 2000, Boca has won the Libertadores 3 times and the Sudamericana twice ... plus 2 Intercontinentals against Real Madrid and AC Milan. To imply that they are favored is inaccurate. Boca has formed very competitive teams ... but most importantly, teams with character to win at international level. They take the tournaments seriously, and it has paid off, both in results as economically.

As to the Pumas incident that GMH brought up ... Pumas was gifted the equalizing penalty in that game. I would trade a red card for a penalty in any game. Even if we end up with 9 ... no pun intended. :D

Now ... BIG TIME edit. There will be 7 Argentinean teams in this year's Sudamericana. The reigning champ plus 6 others. Sorry for the previous info, as that was the way it was last year. This is how it looks:

Sudamerican 06 there will be 7 total Argentinian teams: Boca (reigning champ) + 6 teams. As of today ... with 2 games left:

Boca (reigning champ)
River (invited)
Gimnasia LP (unreachable- highest aggregate)
Lanus
Velez
Independiente
San Lorenzo

1- Boca 40 + 40 = 80
2- Gimnasia LP 37 + 32 = 69
3- River Plate 28 + 31 = 59
4- Lanus 23 + 34 = 57
5- Velez 33 + 24 = 57
6- San Lorenzo 28 + 28 = 56
7- Independiente 32 + 23 = 55 *
8- Banfield 28 + 25 = 53 *
9- Estudiantes 28 + 23 = 51
10- Newells 20 + 30 = 50

* Banfield and Independiente have 1 game less and there is no points in the totals to reflect this game. They play this mid-week the remaing 13 minutes of their Round 11 game which was suspended after problems with the crowd. Banfield is winning 2-1.

Round 19 (last match of the tournament)
Instituto v Vélez
Lanús v Estudiantes
Rosario Central v Independiente
Boca v Olimpo
Quilmes v River
Racing v Newell's
Gimnasia LP v Banfield
San Lorenzo v Arsenal

Updated info ... in case of tie in accummulate points from both tournaments, then the goal average comes into play

1- Boca 40 + 40 = 80 ; GD +19/+21 = +40
2- Gimnasia LP 37 + 32 = 69 ; GD +9/+11 = +20
3- River Plate 28 + 31 = 59 ; GD +9/+13 = +22
4- Lanus 23 + 34 = 57 ; GD -10/+11 = +1
5- Velez 33 + 24 = 57 ; GD +10/+3 = +13
6- San Lorenzo 28 + 28 = 56 ; GD -6/+3 = -3
7- Independiente 32 + 23 = 55 ; GD +12/+3 = +15 *
8- Banfield 28 + 25 = 53 ; GD +10/+3 = +13 *
9- Estudiantes 28 + 23 = 51 ; GD +1/-6 = -5
10- Newells 20 + 30 = 50 ; GD -2/+9 = +7

Lots of possible combinations .... for example San Lorenzo needs to win their game and expect that 2 of these happen to get into the Libertadores:
Banfield ties or loses
Lanus ties or loses
Velez ties or loses

We can say that River is in the Libertadores by now ... their goal difference is way higher than the rest. The only way River is out of the Libertadores is if they lose and if both Lanus and Velez win and Independiente turns the game around against Banfield and follows up with a win at Central. Highly unprobable.
