View Full Version : Newcastle land easy route to Europe
I find it rather funny that people laugh at the Intertoto cup qualification place (7th) in the premiership.
Basically, Newcastle have to play a 2-legged tie against: IBK Keflavik (Iceland), Dungannon Swifts (Irish) or Lillestrom SK (Norway).
If we can beat one of them teams, we go straight into UEFA cup qualifications and have a great chance for a good Euro campaign, which was un thinkable at the start of the year.
I think Newcastle have been the team of 2006 :D and they deserve more credit than they have recieved!

yes it may be an easy route to Europe, however with it meaning the season begins early and even with just a two legged game, it could affect player fitness throughout a season and it has shown this in the past. just look at Boros league position since getting so far into Europe. if you start the campaign much earlier it will affect it even more.
and although it could be considered as just replacement from friendly games...it is much different. friendly games are really just to help get match fitness back; whilst playing in the intertoto cup; newcastle will have alot of pressure on themselves to win incase of humiliation of not qualifying so will be forced to play best players...which also means they are more likely to pick up injurys....
....however I must agree; I wish Sunderland had applied for Intertoto place when we finished 7th two seasons running. just to see our club in europe again no matter what shitey tournement or our league position being affected...it would have been worth it :D
I would also like to point out that Newcastle need to qualify for Europe and do well....they're expenditure is ridiculous compared to there income. think theres a website set up by a newcastle fan who goes informs and estimates of clubs finance using the clubs official documents and releases. interesting reading I must say, and basically comes to the conclussion that Newcastle need success fast to get some money into the club...ill try and get a link

I wouldn't disregard any Norwegian club. They have been known to pull of the occasional upset.
Plus, they will still have to get by the 2nd Qualifying round of the UEFA Cup before they are official in the full competition.

Full credit to Roeder. We could not have probably done it without him.

hope he gets the job to be honest. hasn't had much success at any of his previous clubs, and also this situation reminds me abit of when he took over at West Ham, did well as Caretaker for the last half of the season and was given the job. I believe either the season after or maybe the one after he managed to relegate a team with players such as James, Carrick, Joe Cole, Di Canio, Glen Johnson, DeFoe to name a few....and also the mighty Gary Breen ;)

your past doesn't matter, it's all about current performance. And I think he's done a good job with newcastle

Will it be enough to keep Owen there though? I heard somewhere he has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if Newcastle don't get into Europe. Will scraping through the backdoor to the Uefa Cup keep him satisfied? He's not exactly the most loyal of players.....

while I heard that roeder has took teams to 7th before, and then got relegated the season after... 3 times before. Haven't checked on the facts of that, but it is just coincidence and isn't going to happen because freddy shepherd wouldn't let it. HE is obsessed with our team being a worldbeater alongside real madrid etc and while he makes shit decisions occasionally (souness, selling class players for cash, buying potentially shit players for lots) he always is intending for the team to be massive.

i reckon the toto is boss.. c'mon man.. its a little warm up to the start of the season, gets you into europe and gets you ready for the next season.. you cant worry about player fitness because of a couple of games.. shit happens no matter what you do to prevent players getting worn out.. alan smith last season certainly didnt expect to be sitting out for a year.. y kna

exactly man, they get a shitload of wages and they should be prepared to take a few knocks. I love the players that deal it out and take it just as hard. Real men! real men can play 3 games in a week and not whinge.

real men should be able to play 2 games in one day and then go for a pub lunch
football would be mint if everyone did that.

Whats that based on? Rumours, and they mean nothing! He has stayed 100% committed to us, he said today that he wants to fill the boots of Shearer, says it all where he wants to be.
He and his family is settled and his kids are in school and he says he loves life in Newcastle.
I wish the press would stop making up rumours about Owen and leave him be, and leave Newcastle and him to get on with their lives, its totally unfair!

Not rumours mate, personal experience. I remember clearly how Owen was stating that he wanted to stay at Liverpool and that he will sign a new contract, then a couple of days later he was off to Madrid. It's not like he was forced out either, it was his choice. He could've stated in the previous January that he wanted to go, instead of delaying everything, resulting in us getting only 8 million for him and having very little time to find a replacement.
For the record, I hope he stays at Newcastle - I like Newcastle, always have done and they deserve a good striker. I just don't think he'll be around much longer....but that is pure speculation.....

...and ironically enough the reason why he left us was to win the Champions League...Hahahahahahaha!
