Jose Reina has collected the Barclays Golden Gloves Award for the 2005-06 season.
Barclays Sponsorship Director Matt Appleby said: "To win the Golden Glove in his first Barclays Premiership campaign, and at such a young age, shows Reina's potential.
"He has used this season as a springboard onto the international scene and has seen off the challenge of some world-class players to keep the most clean sheets.
"Reina has been part of an outstanding Liverpool defence that will surely build on their success to make a serious challenge for the title."
Steven Gerrard won the Player of the Month award.

yeah, he had a good season, but "young" he looks so old with that balding....
Its hard to say he deserved it because he's a scouser....but i can disagree with the choice
Great keeper, to bad he's behind Casilas for Spain

Excellent reward for the lad. He's had a top season along with the whole defence. What I love about him is that he organises and shouts at the defence when its needed, I don't remember Jerzy doing much of that (like Carra has pointed out before, he's too nice sometimes) Although he doesn't make as many world class saves as other goalkeepers, he does the routine things well and he doesn't make many mistakes (touch wood). That is consistent goalkeeping :)

I would have went with Given....He gets worked overtime everygame and saves Newcastle from crushing defeats. He is one player who is never been rated high enough and imo deserved this award more then Reina after another great and consistent season.

I would have to agree with zaffo... If Given had the defence Pepe did, it would be very even. Although I must say that Robinson should have been in with a shout too.

Well... Close race with Van Der Sar really. He has something, that Man U. has needed since Schmeichel left. Aura and stability. Also Petr Cech. Would be fun to se just how good he actually is, if he played for Fulham or Charlton or something.
According to Actim Index stats (http://www.premierleague.com/fapl.rac?command=forwardOnly&nextPage=actimTop5&type=Goal%20Keeper), Van Der Sar is in fact the best keeper.
Pepe Reina is only 4th. But then again... they have Lehmann on 3rd, and that says something about their credibility :)
Reina is a good keeper, but he is also a bit nuts. Yes... good keepers tend to be a bit nuts, but Reina really is something. The was he slaughtered Gudjohnson in the Chelsea match  And also when Drogba scored in the FA cup, it looked like he just tried to hit Drogba.
Van Der Sar & Cech are more calm, and would never do a thing like that, so I guess I rate them higher than Reina. But no doubt he is an excellent keeper.
PS: Actually a lot of great keepers in EPL: Van Der Sar, Cech, Reina, Paul Robinson, Shay Given, Brad Friedel, Stephan Andersen, Maik Taylor, Anti Niemi and Jäskelainen.... + Lehmann is alright I guess, he just ends up looking stupid a lot of times. Fx the Wigan game.

He has had a great first season in premiership football and he deserves this award. Great to see him take the award. Look forward for him to compete for it next year as well. Congrats to Pepe

Although Reina has kept the most clean sheets in the Prem, the actim index has him ranked very low for a myriad of different reasons.
1) He does not face as many shots as the other keepers as the Liverpool defense this year has been airtight.
2) Because he is an agressive keeper who acts as a sweeper, he can commit fouls which other keepers usually do not worry about.
3) There have been a number of incidents where he has been carded where he was not in the wrong (the actim index does not take this into account, but the premier league probably does).
4) His work as a sweeper makes him essential to the defense sometimes making it seem like we have 5 men in the back.

Yeah, you're right...he should be #1. ;) :D
But yeah, Reina deserves it.
You have to keep in mind that usually only players from the best teams win these awards. Given has been good, but I don't think he plays on a good enough team to win it. Besides, he hasn't been good enough to keep Newcastle from losing a bunch of games (though congrats on making the Intertoto).

Golden gloves is not for the BEST GOAL KEEPER but for the goal keeper who kept most clean sheets.

Didn't Tim Howard actually win this award his first year in the Prem?
Also Petr Cech. Would be fun to se just how good he actually is, if he played for Fulham or Charlton or something. You took the words out of my mouth (or keyboard or whatever :D). Cech is a very good keeper but best in the world as he was voted this year? Not a chance by far. His defense is just way too good.
Golden gloves is not for the BEST GOAL KEEPER but for the goal keeper who kept most clean sheets.I think the EPL are trying to imply that the best keeper is the one with the most clean sheets.
Shay Given did relegate Birmingham City so I guess he should have won it :D (Sorry blues fans, I couldn't resist)
In my eyes it's the keepers at the bottom that really earn their keep.
Too mad Mhyre of Charlton came half way through the season he has made the most world class saves of any keeper this season.

Did you guys forget his play at Rennes or Sparta Prague? See the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petr_Cech.
The young custodian won a first-team place four matches into the Czech season, and proceeded to set a national record by going 855 minutes without conceding a goal. Just for good measure, he began Sparta's UEFA Champions League campaign by shutting out holders FC Bayern München, and was not beaten until Matchday 5.
He was also the one responsible for the whole campaign in Under-21 european championship in 2002, winning finals against France on penalties 3 to 1.
I think he's done enough to prove his worth, just because he's got the best defense atm doesn't mean he's not the best goalie. ;) We'll see at the World Cup.

same here, given it should have been. Hell Jaaskelainen and Pollitt should have been also considered. Kevin Davis should have gotten simply for the game against Man Utd.
the award in large part is a reflection on the goaltenders ability to organize his defense, so I can see where they are coming from, but Jaaskelainen, given and pollitt impressed me more.
Stille congrats to Reina.

Facts don't lie Pepe deserved it. At the end of the day he still needs to save the shots.
