Ok so i was playin FIFA World CUp 06 today and timmy cahil scored a goalaso with his head, so it was a header, therefore Timmy is a headerer... lol i didnt know any other word to use

so then I started to think which are the top 5 users of the head in the prem(hahahah it rhymes)

I could think of a top three
Cahil, McBride, and Terry... but who are the other two?

crouch is aight but thats hieght i want a real man on my top 5!

There's only one Hernan Crespo!

Seriously... that boy can head! The goal against Man Utd in the CL last season? Quality header. He is so good! That goal was just amazing. The power, the skill and the importance of the goal.

yeas you are right, he is a class player, i think he is still second best on his team....

Hmm... Yes, John Terry do score a lot on the headers, but he does not have the skill like Crespo. When John Terry scores, it's on corners and mostly straight forward with full power. Respect for getting to the ball, but the actual skill of heading is more extreme, when it's Crespo. Often... the crosses he receives, does not have the power that a corner have. He has to put power in to the header and still be able to manouvre the ball past the keeper. And he does that... The Man U goal last season, as a prime example.

In terms of overall record in the last 4 or 5 years, Crespo is the best in air and then its Morientes. But both are a bit off at the moment on form. However in terms of natural ability they both have scored LOTS of goals from headers. JT is also very good.

Crespo is god in the air....he headers with such class and control that others dont seem to have. Terry is also class but he is more power then style related. Terry vs Barca CL last season...Class.....Crespo vs Man U CL last season...Brilliant.

If only Chelsea played 2 upfront more often then the EPL would see the best of Crespo at the Bridge.

oh trust me i thought Borghetti, but i havent seen him knock in a header goal in the prem... until then im going to exclude him...

If only there was an agree button:)

Shame with Crespo... he never really got the chance to show his stuff. And all those offside-mistakes. He gets robbed all the time.

By the way... There is a "]" in the bottom of your sig, that I think should be deleted :)

Well... has he ever played in the prem? :p

Yes... Olli was amazing for both Udinese and Milan. Martin Jørgensen played on the left, but was right legged. So often he would cross the ball with a invert going screw (:p ) and it was easy for Bierhoff to head it in. Can't be bothered to find the stats, but I just know he scored loads.

Also... Udinese played 4-3-3 and he was target man. Probably the best Target man in the world. Also... Morten Skoubo from Sociedad is one hell of a targetman. But him and Bierhoff have one thing in common... they don't play in the EPL!!! :D

Well surely the centre backs have to be taken into account being able to head the ball from crosses etc.. and it doesn't get much better than john terry.

Moro couldn't even score 2 out of 10 headers, if he had pin-point crosses imo, I honestly wouldn't ever have believed that there could be such huge dip in form - and bare in mind that we also have kewell! that boy had a Big dip in form.

as for the best header in the prem, my choice would be stunningly Thierry Henry (JT & Crespo are very good as well).

les ferdinand had by far the best head during the 90's.. can hardly think of a goal that wasnt a header..

I'd have to say Henry or Crespo, they are both great in the air, specially Crespo

I would say either Jared Borgetti or John Terry.

Terry scores a lot of goals on corners with his head through a season and is a great defender as well.

Crouch is crap in the air, in my opinion. He can get up there and win the ball, but he's just got very little power in his (lack of) neck muscles.

Fowler in his prime used to score some beautiful diving headers....and I think I've mentioned this before on this site....I remember seeing John Barnes score a diving header from outside the box (against Norwich, I think...), quality!

Eh..sorry mate but Henry must be one of the worst in the air.Sometimes he seems that he doesn't know how to head the ball. It's the only flaw in his game but fortunately he makes up with everything else;)

lol henry has never been good with his head. weird, but true, he is one of the top strikers who doesn't score a lot with his head. ronaldo9 in the other one. however, i remember what shearer said about henry, that does he really need to be good with his head for the abilities he has with his feet. something like that...;)

Henry's problem is that he doesn't time his jump right - but when he actually reaches the ball he's very good at guiding it. He wins like 1 out of every 10 headers, but that 1 header is often an assist or even a goal.

:)

Shearer is probably the most accomplished header of the ball I've seen over the years. Sheringham was/is very effective in the air as well.

Congratulations Yannis on your 100th post:)

Headering is Henrys only downside to his game.

I know this bloke didnt play in the prem but the SPL is close enough...Henrik Larson i love his diving header for sweden at euro 2004.

Others I can think of apart from the usual Crespo and Terry etc:

Radhi Jaidi
Tim Cahill
Andy Cole
Dwight Yorke
Del Horno (Been shite but its one of his best strengths)
Brian McBride
Bruno N'Gotty

I agree with the Borgetti suggestions. If you've seen him play for Mexico you know he's one of the deadliest in air. I hope with his recent form he'll decide to stay at Bolton but I think his world cup form will decide that one.

And after seeing the goal against Chelsea I'm inclined to add Danny Collins of West Ham to the list. What a bullet header that was! And it was in the top corner too! One of the best headed goals of the season. But that might have been a fluke.

One of the best I've ever seen at winning the ball in the air is Duncan Ferguson of Everton. I don't think i've EVER seen him go up for a ball and not win it. And he occasionally scores them too.

Also, that kid at West Brom is pretty good in the air. What's his name........Curtis Davis, that's it. In the game against Man Utd, Ferdinand and Wes Brown just couldn't keep up with him. If he can work on his defending he's definitely one for the national team in the future.

[Edit] I would also vote for Victoria Beckham but I need to see her in action first :D :D

I think John Terry is definitely one of the best 'headerer'. Chelsea scored so many goals from set pieces and corners.

Just a random thought. I always think Teddy Sheringham is a top class headerer too. Sadly he is quite old now.

If Ashley Cole would Be givving Head, Sol Cambell would be revieving;)

which brings to my mind a few of White Heart Lane Chants

Surprised nobody's mentioned Drogba yet, when he's on form he's wicked with his head. Check out the one he scored against Everton last month, it's an absolute screamer.
Having said that, my vote for the best has to go the Terry though.

The only time drogba is in the air is when he throws himself to the ground, then proceeds to roll around, get the foul called for him, get up and walk away

The best 'headerer' ever imo was Kalle Riedle! No cross was too low for him!

Are you suggesting we limit our squad size to 11?

Players who are good enough play. Just like at any other club - although there is at least one manager who fields a number of shit players week in, week out! ;)
