Dawson on World Cup stand-by
Tottenham defender Michael Dawson has been called into England's World Cup squad as a stand-by.
The 22-year-old Dawson replaces Luke Young, who withdrew on Saturday after aggravating an ankle injury in training.
Uncapped Dawson has enjoyed an excellent season as Spurs finished fifth in the Premiership and qualified for next season's UEFA Cup.
The former Nottingham Forest defender has never been picked for Sven-Goran Eriksson's full squad before but has been a regular at Under-21 level recently.
He will join his new international team-mates when they meet up in Watford on Monday.
I know that he isn't in the main squad, but why dawson over other capped players such as Wes Brown or Matthew Upson???

I'm very dissapointed with that choice. Now who do we have for cover at right-back? No other player in the squad is a natural righ-back except for Neville.

Dear Mother of God, what is wrong with Sven? England fans must have all committed HUGE sins in their past lives (If we are to believe Glenn Hoddle:D) Even as a Liverpool fan I would say pick Wes Brown over bloody Michael Dawson as stand-by. No offence to Dawson, but despite being a good centre-half he has been rather inconsistent this season.

Because he is really really really GOOD!! Neither Upson or Brown have displayed such a great run of form

Dawson has had an excellent season for Spurs this year, he plays already for the U21's and has proved his worth in an england shirt more than once this year aswell, (remember the game against France at WHL).
Sven seems to feel that the future of the England team is in youth so he has gone with his trend setting ways... so how can some people compare this as a bad choice when Wilcot was chosen over Defoe, Bent, Ashton, etc. all of them seasoned pro's in their respective teams and england.
Dawson is a good choice imo.

Who else could he have picked? Phil Neville (already a standby) and Glen Johnson (played very little for Chelsea) are the only right backs not in the squad... and like someone said, Carragher is a natural right back and Gerrard played right back in stoppage time against Milan.
