England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed that standby striker Jermain Defoe will fly out with the England squad to Germany on Monday.

Eriksson has maintained his belief that Wayne Rooney will play at the World Cup, but the injured forward is waiting on the outcome of a scan on Wednesday.

Defoe was preferred to Everton forward Andy Johnson for a place on the plane.

"Defoe goes with us to Germany because we have to be insured about Wayne Rooney," Eriksson said.

imo, this for me is awful, i simply dont rate the guy, but i guess if hes going then all i can do is give him a chance to prove me wrong.

Fair play, but I would prefer Andy Johnson. I just love that man... His skills and such can be discussed, but his spirit is amazing. To me he is the perfect example of the English spirit. Works bloody hard, doesn't complain and just gets the job done.

But maybe he is preferred, because he is smaller? Sven does love that Big-Small attack...

people will argue that johnson tends to lead to penaltys, which he gets most of his season goals from,

but imo hes better than defoe, i dont understand what sven sees in him, although he is taking walcott, so i guess its not that suprising,

i doubt defoe will start many games, but i guess hes an ok back-up, in those every so un wanted cases of trouble.

The fact that Defoe didn't come on in any of the warm-up games makes me think Sven is banking on Rooney being fit.

Defoe has always been good when playing for England...and Johnson has played less than Defoe for England..so i think it's normal Defoe is preferred ahead of Johnson...but however Walcott was picked up in the 23 man list although Eriksson never seen him play.... lolz.. but i personally prefer Defoe to Johnson..i hope Defoe joins Liverpool as he did play much for spurs last season...

i tend to agree more with Bent.. but it's sven.. u know.

i was really hoping england would play their "traditional" football. now only crouch is up front tall enough. if u call owen a midget, what about defoe??? dun get me wrong, i dun hate any of them..
