You know, this hasn't been brought up much, which kinda surprises me. English superstition of not wanting to jinx themselves, perhaps:

An England squad was getting ready for the World Cup. An English squad that while respected, had been somewhat unimpressive in recent years. A manager was ridiculed in the press for something he said, and then disaster struck: England's best striker was struck with an injury.

That was in 1966.

Ok, there are differences: Sven never made a claim that England would win it all 3 years ago, and Greavesie got injured after the tournament started.

But I'm going to shit in my pants if a story comes out tomorrow in the Der Spiegel that the World Cup was stolen and a German Shepherd found it.

Just thinking out loud.......

I was thinking exactly the same thing. A match fixing scandal was the talk in Italy before the World Cup in 1982. :)

Not having a go at you May261999, but I do hate these random omens and stats. You get them from commentators like John Motson. They don't mean anything, they never do, but rest assured you can always find a stat/omen to back up practically every argument or angle of thought.

Lies, damn lies and football statistics...

Actually, I got that one myself, but yeah, upon further review, it's a worthless bit of info so nevermind.
