England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has not ruled out the possibility of Rooney making a return to action in the match.

"I'm very optimistic, always. I'm born like that. We have to decide that day by day, to be honest," he said.

Rooney, 20, returned to full training last Thursday after a scan showed his broken metatarsal bone was healed and he is now trying to gain match fitness.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be furious if his striker does make his World Cup debut in Nuremberg.

Ferguson wanted Eriksson to keep Rooney safely on the sidelines until the knock-out stages of the World Cup but the pair did not agree.

Rooney trained on Sunday, along with the other England players not heavily involved in Saturday's 1-0 win against Paraguay.

England defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed Rooney's determination to make an impact on the World Cup.

Ferdinand said: "He's in good spirits. He's doing well and hopefully he will be able to play a part in a few games. He's looking good in training."

Ferguson finds something to complain about, there's a suprise :D No one cares what he thinks anymore. I think Rooney should come on in the second half against Trinidad, if he is fit enough, and i hope he plays well :)

yeha exactly, leaving his return to such a latter and important stage of the tournament is very risky,

as you said, bring him on as a sub, give him some gameplay and let him have arun out. screw fergie, hes got issues :p

no need to play him yet, if england are doing well and leading against mentioned team it would be logical to leave rooney more time to heal:)

I would say bring him at the end for 10-15 min.

Just to have taste of WC, i think it will be stupid if he plays more than 30 min.

wait so it's been less than a week since rooney was given the all-clear to train and sven moran eriksson wants to jump the gun and put him in on thursday?
is he mad? (it's a rhetorical question)
I'm no doctor and thus haven't a clue how these things necessarily work..how easy it is to aggravate the injury..the consequences of such an aggravation..etc
but remember this?

RECOVERY TIMES
Michael Owen (2006): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 17 weeks later
Wayne Rooney (2004): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 8 weeks returned 14 weeks later
David Beckham (2002): Second metatarsal - predicted 6 weeks returned 7 weeks later
Gary Neville (2002): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 21 weeks later
Ashley Cole (2005): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 12 weeks later
Scott Parker (2004): Second metatarsal - predicted 8 weeks returned 34 weeks later
Danny Murphy (2002): Second metatarsal - predicted 6 weeks returned 21 weeks later
Steven Gerrard (2004): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 10 weeks later

granted those guys could all be lazy..particularly scott parker
but the deja vu is seriously coming on pretty heavy
beckham played more dismally than usual and admitted it was a mistake..though he didn't re-injure it
rooney plays a much more physical style and is always in the thick of it
why risk a comeback and re-injury??

yea.. it might be too early. i say, let him play for the semi final if they get that far.

gotta admit..i broke my fifth metatarsal..and after keeping the weight off ur foot awhile, it gets weak. and rooney is big upper body.

Its a dilemma; do you play him to get match fit and risk injury or wait till the foot is even stronger and not have him match sharp at the later stages?

As much as I really want to see the kid play... i'd rather see him be used latter on in the tourney only so that we ge to see the real Rooney, rather than a half a$$ Rooney!

Against T&T (with all due respect) I don't think a player of Rooney's caliber is required... Crouch/Owen/Cole will do the job.
