I've forgotten how the Premier league fixtures work. How do teams end up playing 39 games with 12 teams in the league?

everyone plays each other 3 times.
12 teams = you play 33 games, the luck of the draw see's one of those teams at home twice, with the other hosting only one.
then once everyone has played the original 33 games. league splits
into two halves
top 6, and lower 6.
remaining 5 games each, with top 6 only playing each other, and lower 6 only playing each other.
then the venue is decided on where the previous fixtures for teams have played;
for example
if celtic have played rangers three times, twice at home and once away after the 33 games. rangers will play the top 6 match at home, to even it up 2 home games apiece
compendre?

I feel pretty good about the first few matches for the Rangers. I wish they would have gotten Celtic a bit sooner though.

No
Is that for real, you need a degree in maths for that
Why not just play each other four times and have 44 games?

with celtic and rangers now doing quite well in europe (most of time anyway):D 44 games just causes to much fixture congestion. the sfa came up with that scheme to get nearer their desired 36 games a season without reducing the league to 10 teams again. i'm not convinced by the league split at all but thats the way it is im afraid

If you count a bunch of meaningless games an excellent end of a season, then best of viewing to you.
Chriswvtr there is not enough room in the league season to play each other 4 times and be done with it. As it stands our league season starts 2 weeks before Englands and normally finishes after. With no winter break in our season, and much less teams in Scotland, its hard to wonder why that happens!
The league format is a shambles in general. Why on earth does a nation our size have 4 professional football leagues with about 10-12 teams a-peace?! With each team playing someone from their own division 3-6 times per season. Its just stupid and no wonder on-lookers from within Scotland and foreigners from outwith just cringe at the sight of Motherwell vs Falkirk (no offence intended) on Sunday afternoon prime-time because it was Falkirk vs Motherwell Sunday prime-time just 6 weeks ago and we can look forward to the same again in another 2-3 months.
So we start with Kilmarnock AGAIN at the start of the season. When did they last win in paradise? The 50's!

No wonder they cringe when even "scottish" fans start slagging off the league

Whats got to with anything???? Denmark has 4 leagues, Norway has 6 leagues, Sweden has 4 leagues. So reduce the number of teams/league and this will acheive??

And.. every league has teams that arent regarded highly outside the country ffs why does motherwell v falkirk on a sunday upset you so much.
Your post reeks of self loathing seany get a grip or fo and support a top 4 epl team

It isnt the games that upset me which im speaking about, or the level of football which we portray.. Its the repetitiveness which if you include cup games, you could be watching the same game 6 (even 8(replays)?!) times per season, you'd be lucky if each team gathered more than 4 points from each other. Is this truly the football you wish to watch each season?!
In my view, and amongst others I talk to, the league would have much better definition (top, middle & bottom) if teams played each other less often.
It doesnt help that there's only 2 teams in our league which can truly compete for the title year in year out. In the scandinavian leagues this is much the same, with the exception of the odd Aberdeen & Hearts putting in a wee challenge for the title every odd year. Its not my place to start discussing the scandinavian leagues though.
Self loathing? I think not. I want to see a more competitive league thats all. It could only be good for our game. IMHO.
And it might even help me see Ran*ers get religated in my lifetime :p

How can it be an easy game when they struggled to get any points of us last season and infact were beaten the last 2 times they played in Inverness...
