View Full Version : Are you/will you be a member/supporter of an A-League side?
I am considering getting membership or at least going to a few Perth Glory matches in the new season, but I'm a little scared I'll be completely disappointed and never go back!
Maybe I'll watch a few on telly first. I'll be honest, I haven't even seen more than a couple of Glory matches and I've only ever been to one so...
Has the World Cup inspired any other Aussies to watch more local football?

Victory till I die :)
The A-League has a long way to go, but it gets better and better. International players are starting to sign with clubs (Claudinho, Fred, York) and the matches are ever increasingly fun to watch.
The problem is promotion and stadia IMO... When you can only fit 15-20k people into a ground, it doesn't bode well against other football codes in the country.
I'll download the A-League Grand Final from last season. See what it's like.

Hey,
I am a new ROAR member just this year. Not with season tickets, just a keyring, card, sticker and a quartely magazine for $55. Condersidering the quartley mag and keyring retail for $30, it is really only giving a small amount to the club.
I decided I'd follow the local competition this year. It can only get better. The more members and more interest, the more support from sponsers the media etc.
I think all Australia soccer/football fans should take out memberships. We all want to see A-league become a world premier league in 2 decades. So let's help it along.
I was watching a Drew Carey Sporting Adventure show today. He was interviewing a Barcelona Fan asking how much he spent on his football habit a year. The answer? 15,000 Euros. I tell ya, if every australian soccer fan spent $1500 AUD! ;)

I am a football family member (Newcastle Jets) from last year, meaning I have being folllowing this new local league very closely for atleast a year. After the world cup you're right, it excites me even more and no doubt the local lads do feel an extra buzz to get out on the pitch and show these new football converts some of their skills.

Well I moved to Australia about 9months ago and the A-league fulfilled my 'live football' fix. I was a regular at a my local Conference club Crawley Town (Chelsea tickets too expensive for a 16 year old!) and the A-league I feel is great entertainment. It just needs more teams. Maybe try having two teams from each state so there are some good rivalries? ie Merseyside, Arse-Spurs or closer to home like Crows/Port?

I'm a Melbourne Victory member, simply because it's damn good value. I'm a student, so I have the concession membership. $98 and includes entry into all 11 home matches and 1 pre-season match! You simply don't get that value with the other codes!
Considering that you'll pay around $15-20 minimum to go to each match, a membership just makes sense.

I'm a Melbourne Victory member too. Even though I support Adelaide UTD i live in Melbourne now so I like watching the soccer. How come you didn't get the student package like I did? for $75 much cheaper and better value.

I don't have membership per se because I never know when I will or won't be able to attend matches.
I'll be at CCM vs Adelaide in an hour and a half though :)
Also got my ticket for Sydney vs CCM next week

My wife and I are going to be signing up as Gold members of Perth Glory this week. Just keep in mind you'll probably never see the quality of football that you're used to watching on TV from overseas - here in Australia.
The passion at the stadiums will never be there - as Australians just don't get loud and noisy in that respect at sporting events. We're far too family driven and there isn't the history to create the passionate rivalry/hatred of the other teams to create that kind of atmosphere.
If you can accept that you're going to be watching a product that'll probably be no better than the English Second division (for a while anyway) then please support your team. The more people going, the bigger the sport will become here.
As I see it - if you really love the sport then you'll turn up, show your vocal support and help build the A-League into a real competitive league. If you just want to come to compare it to the Premiership, Serie A, etc.. then you may as well stay at home.

Well I meant I'm a university student, I'm 24 so not eligible for the student membership which is for high school students only (13-18 year olds?).
See you there!

Where do you generally watch from? Please tell me you're not SDC ;)
I'm usually about 5 meters away from the BWB on the Swan St. end, but for the game on Friday we went up into the stands just under the boxes after half-time. We had to tell a group of teeny-bopper girls to shove off because they sounded like dolphins when they laughed.

HAHA
I stand up right where the Union and BWB is at. But in a few games (friday night) I got fed up with the crowd at the end and move where the away supporters are. Some of the girls at the games are alright though... like damn. I remember melbourne vs sydney there these two birds right beside me as I was filming the crowd they were waving trying to get me attention. You heading down to the adelaide game, I hope they fire Merick soon... getting fed up mate.

Go Sydney FC!!!
Sydney crowds only support winning teams, so hopefully Sydney can again have a stellar season, so that football can stay in the limelight here.
If i wasn't getting paid while i watch the games, i'd probably get a season pass, and just had to finally invest in foxtel, as last yr with no EPL on sbs was depressing, and heaven forbid we should have any a-league on free to air.
Its also great to see some familiar old faces coming to end their days here...
very encouraging

Nah, I'm going to have to miss the opener because a mate of mine decided to have her birthday that night. How dare she! Haha, oh well. I'll be at Telstra Dome for the Sydney FC clash.
When there's a large-ish crowd, I don't think you can beat standing with the Union/BWB boys... but there was something like a 2k turnout for Friday, and you can definitely tell the difference in atmosphere.

I'm a Victory member, but i live in the country so its hard to get there are bvack, especially since i've got Year 12 exams coming up.
But as long as I make it to 5 games, my membership is paid off.
By the way, great turnouts so far, the 40,000 will up the average heaps. Hopefully New Zealand can pick it up now that they're winning. Any Knights members here?
Danny Allsopp is your favourite player? WOW.
Anyway, just before the Sydney game me cousin signed me up for season ticket for me 21st. 40k was very impressive.
Matt I'll be standing with the SDC now, they are very local and have some great chants. I'm not into the whole OLE OLE thing plus they are pomps so we can have more of a laugh.

Yeah, the SDC have been looking more appealing to me lately too. Unfortunately, my mates don't agree and still seem to think they'll get stabbed.

Yeah, hardest working player on the team (along with Muscat). My brother suported Hull and he was a gun there too. So it kinda stemmed from there. And who couldn't love him after the lob over Bolton :D

Keeping football to weekends and study to weekdays helps... oh, and a lot of beer in between.
