It's fair to say that Marco Materazzi is one of Serie A's most reviled players -- by both fans and his fellow competitors. After the World Cup, it seems that this reputation has carried over to the international scene as well.

But although he's shown himself to be of questionable ability and professionalism, he's also demonstrated that he's able to rise to the occasion and make his mark on a game. Clearly, Materazzi is, along with Fabio Grosso, one of the Italian team's foremost breakout talents.

So my question is... will fans of both Italy and Serie A continue to dislike him?

For me, it is quite the opposite. I have always been a big fan of his, but have lost a little of my respect due to the face that he probably said something far too serious to Zidane, but then again I wanted France to win the match yet I was still hoping for Marco to score his pen as he was my favourite player (left) on the pitch.

I feel exactly the same. I saw the way he behaved in Serie A last season and i wasn't impressed with his behaviour at all, but during this World Cup he's totally won me over. He is a better player than the Zidanne fanboys give him credit for, and he defended very well throughout the tournament.

I can't be endeared to someone who after goading a fellow professional leaps himself into the air when headbutted in the chest. The headbut was more like something a young boy would do to his dad. I think we need to get all this play acting out of football and the only ones who can do it are FIFA with their directives to referees but they seem contented for it to stay

Marco is really nice in person. On the pitch he is sometimes intimidating but hey, that's part of the game no?

I thought I was the only one that found Davey's view a bit one sided. :o

Not once did I hear MM was acting ... on the other hand, the analysts in Madrid (and they <3 Zizou) were astonished. Went ahead to state that if it had been Camoranessi or Del Piero, they could had ended in a hospital.

Materazzi played his best football ever at this WC ... he even ended top goal scorer for his team!

i hated him before and i still hate him. although i admit, he did do well in nesta's place (that penalty he gave up in the final was a 100000% dive by malouda so i don't count that against him). good penalty in the shootout also.

edit: just read other posts in this thread. trying your best to purposely injure people is part of the game now? how anyone can say the man is not a complete thug on the field is beyond me.

I'm just dissappointed with the amount of ZZ bashing in the media and MM comes out smelling of roses. Mind you judging by ZZ's comments he said this about my sister/mother he should've stayed silent  lol

My point is I really want FIFA to do something about players rolling around like little girls. Could you imagine if you were down the pub and you pushed someone and they went down on the floor holding themselves? It truely is pathetic. :(

I thought I was the only one that found Davey's view a bit one sided. :o

Yeah it was a little. I'm just saying I'm fed up with play acting in football and for a player that goes in so hard you'd expect that he wouldn't go down like a sack of shit - if you're headbutted in the chest you don't need to roll around on the ground

Then there's the other extreme like the picture above of the lad's face cut up - not nice - contact sport maybe but we have limits in a civilised society.

I've probably been a little harsh on MM in this case (I'll edit my original post) as they are all doing it (making the most of it) but I'm just fed up with it. Unfortunately like I said before it is probably here to stay cos FIFA are content to let it.

Materazzi????

Well, I don't have too many fond feelings for him. I believe this guy plays way too aggressive. Before everyone says he had a 'great' world cup, I'd say he surprised me with his effort. I still thought of him as a timebomb ready to explode. He did good filling in for Nesta. He still needs to tone his game down, because he will miss the ball and get all leg, picking up cards, like when he got a red against Australia!

I dont like him, he tends to make huge defensive errors, I remember him chipping the ball over his own keeper last season and heading the ball past his own post during the final. I still think he has potential though, in corners atleast lol.

I didn't like him before the WC and I'm not gonna like him afterwards. But he played very well during the WC. Best football of his career. And honestly (if you follow Italian football you know it) he has been very quiet in terms of fouls and acting. He's much worse than that.
Before the WC I said he was the worst player brought to Germany by Lippi and I've been proven wrong. But now my judgement goes back to what it was before. 4-5 good games do not make him a good player forever.
