Following the enquiry surrounding the publication of a statement from the players it would seem:
On 17 July 2006, Aston Villa Plc ("Aston Villa" or the "Company") announced that the board of Aston Villa (the "Board") had set up an internal enquiry into the circumstances surrounding the publication of a statement purportedly from the entire first team squad.
That enquiry has completed its investigations. Although no misconduct by the manager, David O'Leary was uncovered, as a result of the investigation, it has been agreed that an amicable parting of the ways was in the best interests of all parties.
Accordingly, a compensation package reflecting the situation has been established and it has been mutually agreed to terminate the contract of David O'Leary, with immediate effect.
The shit has hit the fan.
Here it is on Skysports (http://msnsport.skysports.com/list.asp?hlid=404392&CPID=8&clid=7&lid=4161&title=O'Leary+leaves+as+Villa+boss)

more than likely, been in the press over the last few days. however the number of managers linked to the Sunderland job in the papers over the last month or so you would think they were just guessing

That's exactly what they are doing and all of the rumours are very flattering for Mackems...
Sam Allardyce - Why the hell would he leave Bolton and drop a league to a side unlikely to return for a number of years.
Curbs - Possible, he hasn't really made Charlton into anything special, I still think he can aim higher.
Martin O'neil - HAHAHA, O'neil is far to high up to drop as low to manage Sunderland.
Basically wait until all the rumours die down and you'll appoint a mediocre manager.......
Just like we did at Newcastle

Prehaps sunderland are preparing to pull a portsmouth on us. £40 million budgets can be awfully attractive to a prospective manager. (especially when you're leaving behind a 40p budget)

don't flatter yerself mate. Roeder mediocre? Wouldn't even say he's that! ;)
I don't know who Quinn will get, but you have to admit the club has everything set in place such as the stadium and academy and now the money...all we need now is a team and a leader.
I honestly think it'll be either Sam Allardyce, O'Neill or O'Leary. I would be happy with any of them, although the "wow" factor would be if Oneill came. and I reckon a few people will be upset if Oleary gets the job, although to be fair, he did a very good job with Leeds and got them to the Champions League Semi-Final and should have got to the final if not for dodgy decisions. allbeit he spent alot of money but thats not his fault, but Risdale who gave him it to spend. and as you lot well know, money doesn't ALWAYS buy success, so the fella must have talent. if it did Mourinho wouldn't be held in such high regard.
The worst senario imo would be either Quinn coming in as manager or him appointing Brian Kerr.
Hoddle and the rest of the others linked as "outsiders" are all canny, but not what we want tbh

Oleary did spend abit at Villa, but nothing really considering the size of the club and the sales of players.
what a suprise Ellis is a good friend of our ex. chairman bob murray. both tight bastards.
I just don't see the attraction to Sunderland. :(

I don't see the attraction to Newcastle tbh. Roeder will be out before xmas imo. you lot won't put up with bad results, and rightly so - it takes alot before out fans kick off.
*on a completely different note mate. have you ever wondered why Harper has never moved on. he had a spell around 1999 or so when he played a fair few games, but I doubt in his 15 years or so at Newcastle he'll be lucky to have played 100games!
:) Harper is superb back up.
I'm obviously not going to get into a Mackem-Toon arguement, it's too boring and hard to bring you guys down to earth :)

yes - when was the last time the season has been coming to an end and they've had something to play for?
at least we have something to play for from time to time!
