Ok, so how ARE Selangor and Kuala Lumpur or DBKL doing nowadays? It's been far too long. Chow Kwai Lam still coaching?

if you ask me, kuala lumpur is one of the weakest state teams right now. they didnt even qualify for the malaysian cup group stage. selangor is still competing in the malaysian cup. they need some help if they want to make it to the last eight. currently, they are third in the group, just behind my team ;) this saturday will decide which team go further.
chow kwai lam, i dont know where is he now. you might know mat zan mat aris, i think he is the current coach of kuala lumpur. KL have not been doing good for several years now, even some other club teams are doing much better than them.

with all the bad press going around the MLeague, who cares anymore..
even the great chelsea-wanna-be MPPJ has been withdrawn from all competition, with Khir Toyo said it's enough with the football, stating that Selangor shold be the only team that comes out from the state...
my concern is, WHY does malaysia football wants to copy the acts of the EPL ? i mean, why not keep it simple and interesting, like it was before..?
remember the semi-pro time before ? now THAT was football, seeing the rivals between kedah and singapore, pahang and johor, selangor and everyone else....where simplicity was implimented...the time where the football was so fun to watch, so exciting to follow....
for those kedah fans, being one that is, i remember the runs of Mohd Nidzam Adzha(dubbed as Ryan Giggs by some), the tall nature of Kamal Idris Ali in defence, the maestro performance from el-kapiten Radhi Mat Din, the huge Azmi Mahmud in goal, and of course the talented brazilian Andrei Luis Nascimento....and of course the old goat Hashim Mustafa up front
kinda sad to see malaysia football really sinking into non-existence....the league is rubbish, the national team is a disgrace, even MyTeam was a flop if u ask me....
can anyone out there suggest how to be supportive, where all u can see is just excuses to complain ??

You just have to look at the youth set-up in Malaysia and mindset of every Malaysian towards being a professional football player. If you tell your parents you wanna be a football player when you grow up, they'll whack you over the head and send you to extra classes. How is the M-League suppose to survive when there is now inflow of good young players?

well, if mentality's the blame, then it's ALMOST impossible to even think about having a 'good' national team....
i admit, there are alot of talents out there which has not been discovered yet...but what's wrong with the team that we have already ? not looking into 30 years in the future, but now...the asian cup is just around the corner, being one of the host this time around, i honestly don't think that we can go far...i'm afraid later that everyone's gonna say that 'malaysia organises sports event first class-but the team that they sent was mediocre...'
is it in the coaches? or maybe the players ?

Is it in the coaches? or maybe the players ?
It's in the leadership structure--too many people who have zero playing and coaching experience running things, and the only reason they're in those positions is because they know some member of royalty who ensures they have a high position in the state FA, or the FAM.
Datuk Paul Mony was a member at my church when I was growing up, when Malaysia last had a league and a national team to be proud of (1988-1990, my young friends)--I enjoyed talking to him about how the league was coming along (yes, the Dunhill Semi-Pro league), and I pretty much owed him everything for setting me up to try out for DBKL and then KL.
Unfortunately, it all fell apart after 1992, for whatever reason. Maybe the high of the 1989 SEA Games finally wore off (what a tournament--simply glorious), maybe the dependence on overrated foreigners stymied the development of domestic talent, maybe the gambling scandal had such far-reaching consequences it ruined the domestic game, maybe the failed "Barcelona Babes" experiment set the game back 5 steps after taking 3 steps forward by the late 1980s.
In any case, it's dark days now. And it's a shame, really. I still get a chill when I remember the glory days of Zainal, Dollah, Rashid Hassan, Chow Siew Yai, Lim Teong Kim, Lee Kin Hong, Nidzam, Azman Adnan, etc. They could've been a great generation of players like Mokhtar (rest in peace, you legend), Santokh, James Wong, and Chin Aun.

surprised noone has talked about it yet but here's some of the articles from the star.
Former Malaysian national football coach Chow Kwai Lam has been fined S$50,000 (RM114,000) in default four months' jail for attempted bribery involving a Singapore League (S-League) match here two years ago.
Subordinate Court Judge Jasvender Kaur handed down the sentence yesterday after finding Chow guilty last week.
She said she had considered Chow's long involvement in football as well as his achievements in the sport and the circumstances he now faces.
“What rests heavily on my mind is (the plea) that you are not in any way connected to or involved with any betting or gambling syndicate and that you did not place any wager or bet on the game itself,” she added.
However, she said that Chow's behaviour was inexcusable.
Under Section 6(b) of Singapore’s Prevention of Corruption Act, Chow faced a maximum of five years in
jail, a fine of up to S$100,000 (RM230,000), or both.
Chow’s counsel Lim Khoon, Hamidul Haq and Intekhab Khan said they had not decided whether to appeal against the sentence.
Hamidul said there was a lack of motive for his client to commit the offence.
Chow was charged on Aug 16 last year with corruptly offering between S$200 (RM460) and S$300 (RM690) and a further unspecified amount of cash to Zulkifli Zainolabidin, who was then the first-choice goalkeeper of the Paya Lebar-Punggol Football Club.
The money was to induce Zulkifli to intentionally allow the opposing team, Home United, to score two or three goals in the match against Paya Lebar-Punggol on June 16, 2005.
Chow appeared shocked when the judge meted out the fine but quickly composed himself.
He later told reporters that it would be tough for him to continue life without football.
“I have been involved in football for so long. My life is football.
“In my heart, I know I am not involved (in match-fixing). I think 80% of the people in Malaysia know I am not involved,” he added.
Chow said he regretted testing the goalkeeper.
“It was a bad move,” he added.

The Singaporean goalkeeper asked by former Malaysia coach Chow Kwai Lam to fix a domestic soccer match said it had been a mistake to attempt to bribe him.
Kwai Lam, 64, was found guilty by a Singapore court last week of offering a bribe to former Paya Lebar Punggol goalkeeper Zulkifli Zainolabidin to let the opposition score two or three goals in a match in 2005.
Kwai Lam, who received a life ban from football in Singapore and Malaysia, was fined S$50,000 (RM114,000) by the court on Tuesday.
“He should have known that I was a former police officer and I would never do things to bring shame to my family,” Zulkifli, 28, told Today newspaper.
“I never meant to cause anyone any problems but it was my duty as a professional footballer and as a police officer to report the matter to the club management.”
Kwai Lam continues to deny attempting to bribe Zulkifli and insists the approach was aimed at testing the goalkeeper’s integrity.
Zulkifli, who now plays for S-League club Balestier Khalsa, said that he wanted to put the incident behind him but that he would never be able to fully forget about it.

It's really hard for me to believe, because he not only coached us as players, but he also taught his young ones how to act with dignity and class both on and off the field.
I want to believe where he says he was just testing the player's integrity, but surely there was a better way to do it? :(

we fail to pass the first qualify for the WC, that's to be expected, at least they gave a good fight at the 2nd Leg at home with a draw at 0 -0 against Bahrain, pretty well done i should say, with the team consisting of U-23 players with only just a few senior player losing an aggregate of 4 -1, they restructure FAM..just hope things will be better from now on. its great that we didn't look for a foreign with a given nationality to play for us
still i can't understand the need of splitting the league into two (Super league n Premier League) it'll just make the number of matches they'll play for a season much lesser..if they were gonna make it that way..they should allow more clubs to enter the league, this will give more chances of new players to emerge as well as having more matches to play keeps the player to always keep their concetration n fitness throughout the season. still..i would really love to see our flag in the WC some day :D :D

Malaysia call on Rush to solve striking woes
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Malaysian soccer chiefs are hoping to inject some Anfield magic into their forward line after recruiting Liverpool great Ian Rush to help solve the country's goalscoring problems.
The country's soccer federation is planning an upheaval of its national team after their embarrassing performance as co-hosts of last year's Asian Cup.
Malaysia suffered humiliating defeats in all three of their group matches and scored only one goal.
As part of the revamp, national team coach B. Sathianathan will spend three weeks with English Premier League champions Manchester United, working alongside former Real Madrid coach Carlos Queiroz, Alex Ferguson's number two.
Khairy Jamaluddin, deputy president of the Football Association of Malaysia, told local media that Malaysia were struggling because of their poor quality strikers.
'Rush will be here in March... we know that our strikers are not doing very well so they should learn from him,' Khairy said.
'It is important that our coaches get experience with an international team. Sathianathan will be shadowing Carlos Queiroz for the three weeks.'
Sathianathan, who replaced Norizan Bakar last August, told Tuesday's Star Newspaper: 'This a great chance for me to learn from the best.
'The national team will not be in training during that period and I can spend time learning and looking at ways to further improve our team.
Malaysia were eliminated in the first round of qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in November and have never gone beyond the group stages of the Asian Cup.

Watching on stream?
It's fantastic how disciplined we are defensively. Sure there are gaps in midfield and we could release the ball faster and improve our first touch etc. etc. but that was a fantastic performance at the back. We've actually been playing like that for awhile now, great to see us finally reaping rewards. We're improving, slowly but surely. Clean sheets win you games, no doubt about it.
Can't wait for the 2nd leg this weekend. I think we should be able to hold them off and make it to our first final since 96.
the first match defeat against Indonesia really gave a lesson, and how they improved since then...
the Khairul Fahmi is certainly a better choice between the sticks than Sharbinee (surely after letting 5 goals in, his morale went downward) putting Amar as a defensive midfielder in fornt of the 2 center-backs really help strengthen the defence and kept the Vietnamese striker quiet for most part of the game..
hopefully they will polish up their passing and movement in particular for the next leg on away ground. we have a 2 goal advantage but anything could happen in football and they should be careful...
it was a great atmosphere in Bukit Jalil, its been a while since we last see those passion for our beloved country from such a large crowd (est. over 50,000?) the singing, the cheering, the flares...wish i was there. :p its great to see our national team get the recognition and they delivered the goods last wednesday...

We've only gone and done it! Fantastic defending throughout! First AFF final since 1996! I still can't believe how amazing our backline is. Only complaint is that we have got to play a better final ball and be less hesitant with the finishing. But it's good that we're improving the team from the back. Brilliant stuff. I can't wait to head to Bukit Jalil for the final. Bring on Indonesia/Philippines!
the defence did well throughout the match, there are few mistake here and there...but we can clearly see the game plan was to defend our lead on away ground...some might find it an unpretty sight but in football "beautiful play doesn't win u matches, results do..."
Bukit Jalil will be packed, and the Ultras Malaya will surely will sing their heart out at the final...

Ehhh, Indonesian crowds have always done that when up against Malaysia in anything. I was at the Thomas Cup final in '92 in Stadium Negara and even there, the couple hundred Indonesian migrant workers were loud enough to be heard booing our national anthem and players during the games.

The Senayan or whatever they call that stadium now has always been a bogey venue for Malaysia. A 3-goal lead should be enough of a cushion now. I hope Rajagopal doesn't decide to fix what's not broken and adopt a defensive posture to protect the lead.

Good read. I felt like I was there. Sent you a friend request too, in case you're trying to figure out whom that's from.
Add August 31, 1989, by the way. :)
I've heard a couple of friends from back home who are my age or slightly older refer to Safee as very Mokhtar-ish the way he plays. That would be simply brilliant.
And you really don't know Malaysia Berjaya? That doesn't get played/sung anymore? :o
If anybody has a cap...........I would be willing to pay for this!
EDIT: DUDE! The giant flag was upside down during the national anthem!!!! WTF?

Oh that song was sung plenty of times last night. I just didn't know the lyrics.
And yes, papers and other people call Safee the new age Mokhtar. I don't know how he compares but his finishing is deadly when he's on form. I've had to read/hear for years about Mokhtar Dahari, Santokh Singh, Soh Chin Aun etc. I will now be telling future generations about Norsharul, Safee et al.
As for a cap I think there's a Malaysian torrent tracker that usually caps some games. I managed to get our SEA Games victory last year from there. I'll see if they have it and let you know.

I totally get that. For me, I caught the tail-end of the Golden Age with those guys and the next generation with Serbegeth, Teong Kim, Siew Yai, Zainal, Dollah, etc. They weren't as good, but they gave me August 31, 1989, and getting to play with some of them was awesome as well :D

As for the game, what the hell was the Indonesian defender thinking on the first goal? Still, great work by Norshahrul to get in there and he played it perfectly when he could so easily have gone for goal himself. The buildup to the second goal was almost identical, wasn't it? Nice finish. Third one was breathtaking in its simplicity, and executed to perfection.

Maybe, but if you look at the seedings for the Olympic qualifying tournament, we're still very low down and there are plenty of other countries ahead of us the in the pecking order.
We'll have to play Pakistan first, before another knockout qualifier before we get down to the group stage. If we get a bit of luck with the draw, I think we can spring an upset or two and make it to the playoffs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_AFC_Men%27s_Pre-Olympic_Tournament
But as for the World Cup, I think 2018 is more realistic but I would be loved to be proved wrong. After all, if North Korea can park the bus all the way to the World Cup, so can we :D
Fans here are also clamouring for Aussie-born Brendan Gan, whose parents are Malaysian, to be called up into the national setup. I've seen him play in the A-league for Sydney FC and he could definitely be an asset. We'd be stupid not to give him a trial at least.

But as for the World Cup, I think 2018 is more realistic but I would be loved to be proved wrong. After all, if North Korea can park the bus all the way to the World Cup, so can we :D
We won't need to park the bus. The best thing that can happen to any Malaysian squad is to get over the mental hump that has always come into play whenever a Malaysian team has stepped out onto the field. It's almost as if in their minds, they have already lost, and they play like they're already defeated. Wins like this one and in the SEA Games give the players the confidence they need to get it in their heads that they have a fighting chance.
There was once a time when we beat the likes of South Korea and Japan with ease. "It can't be done" is no excuse, because it's already been done.
The next most important thing that needs to happen is Rajagopal needs to be left the fuck alone. Sooner or later, some Raja Muda or whatever is going to have his feelings hurt because Rajagopal didn't field his favorite player or doesn't have enough Malays in the starting lineup or whatever. The man has already shown results. Leave him be and let him continue to develop things. I don't remember too much about him from my playing days back home since he was at PKNS and I was with DBKL, so I hope he's strong-willed enough to stand up to any potential interference and does his thing without being afraid of the politics that are behind it all.
agreed...definitely things can only be worsened when politics is involved...

Own-goal hands fortunate Blues win
Chelsea stumbled to another fortunate win in their second pre-season friendly under Andre Villas-Boas against a Malaysian XI on Thursday.
The Blues won the first match of their far east tour in Kuala Lumpur but, as in their victory at Portsmouth just over a week earlier, they were far from convincing.
And, like at Fratton Park, they needed an own goal to avoid a goalless draw in a match that saw new manager Villas-Boas again play two entirely different XIs in each half.
The winner arrived 12 minutes from time when Didier Drogba won a free-kick, which he took and smashed against the post, only for the ball to hit goalkeeper Mohd Izham Tarmizi and spin back towards the line.
The substitute thought he had retrieved the ball in time but the goal was controversially awarded.
Otherwise, Chelsea struggled against a side who conceded 10 times against recent tourists Arsenal and Liverpool.
Playing in what was extreme heat in front of a packed 84,980, the visitors began the match with captain John Terry, Drogba and Ashley Cole on the bench, and Fernando Torres spearheading a 4-3-3 formation.
The Spaniard missed an early chance, while Frank Lampard could easily have opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he was gifted the ball 10 yards out and stabbed wide.
Ryan Bertrand was forced off with a knock after 38 minutes before Lampard sent another shot wide and Yossi Benayoun and substitute Patrick van Aanholt also went close.
Chelsea's second-half team did not fare much better and were fortunate not to fall behind with a quarter of the game remaining when Syahrul Azwari blazed over after being played through.
Terry twice headed off target from a Drogba free-kick and Yury Zhirkov corner, moments which sandwiched a good chance for Daniel Sturridge, whose left-foot curler was palmed away by Mohd Farizal Marlias.
Drogba then looked to have spared any blushes Chelsea might have had, but the hosts should have levelled with six minutes left, Thamil Arasu wasting the chance to his and his team-mates disbelief.
Villas-Boas will be hoping for an improved performance in Sunday's game with Thailand All Stars in Bangkok, before heading to Hong Kong for the Barclays Asia Trophy.
Villas-Boas admitted he had hoped for more goals from his team.
"It was a difficult game with the heat and the amount of training we have been doing," he told Chelsea TV.
"The players felt it a little bit and I think the most important thing is for us to get fitness conclusions at the moment.
"We had a couple of chances, we cannot deny that, it's a pity that the result went short a little bit on our expectations.
"But some good combinations and some good levels of fitness were shown."
Drogba admitted he did not know whether he had scored.
"I couldn't see from where I was whether the ball was in or not," he said.
And the Ivorian revealed he was relishing the competition for places the Blues have up front.
"Every team would live to have five centre forwards like we have, it's fantastic for Chelsea and fantastic for us," he added.
Israeli Benayoun was booed in the first half, but Chelsea denied the crowd's reaction was anti-semitic.

Singapore keeper goes down for about two minutes during injury time, but the ref doesn't add any further time. Nice. Oh well, the immigrants help them through.

red card was harsh to be fair, however, singapore should've finished the game off with the one on one towards the end, good recovery save by the keeper - awful lot of time wasting throughout (from what i saw)
i guess the tiger cup champions won't be going on to the world cup, i'm guessing this'll go down as a shock result in asia? so many chinese and european players for the singapore team, not sure if this is why there's a lot of distain towards the singapore nt in singapore or not but hey, they progress so congratulations to them

Malaysia was the lower-ranked team coming into the qualifying rounds. They've never made it past the 2nd round of Asian qualifying in almost 40 years. Why on earth would this be a shock result?

Winning the Suzuki Cup doesn't exactly make one a powerhouse in Asia.i'm not disputing that, but it still would go down as an upset considering both these teams were involved in it, and singapore didn't make it out of the group stages while malay went on to lift the trophy (considering both these teams are south east asian) i'd put this down as a turn up for the books

Once again - Singapore was the higher-ranked team going into this round. That's why we had to play a prior round. Anyway, upset or not, whatever.
6 goals for Singapore, every single one of them scored by an immigrant player. This isn't even close to how the US uses immigrants. Heck, Qatar's team probably has more locals playing for them. Yeah, I'm a little disgusted.

Disgusted doesn't even begin to describe how I'm feeling. Ugh. We could've scored more though, passing was very wayward and the pressure told on the less experienced players. Better decision-making needed. Missed a lot of gaps to thread through balls, missed a lot of runs onto through balls, missed a lot of basic passes and a continued tendency to play the long ball forward even though Singapore were larger than us. But all in all, we had our chances and we could've made it through, foreigners or not.
Hopefully we can learn from this and push on to defend the Suzuki Cup and qualify for the next Asian Cup.
Fantastic atmosphere at the stadium though; we continue to show why we are among the most passionate football fans anywhere in the world :).

Story of Malaysian football, isn't it? Almost like England.
Anyhow, I enjoyed catching what little bit of it I could. I'm just glad that the FAM has shown plenty of patience with Rajagopal. We're never going to become world-beaters, but with the right moves and investment rather than the politics of favoritism that has plagued Malaysia in general, let alone in football, for decades, I hang on to the hope that we'll see Malaysia back at the Olympics someday, and perhaps even at a World Cup.
Until then, may whomever's drawn with Singapore thump the shit out of them in the next round. :D And begrudgingly, I have to say congrats to the Thais as well.
EDIT: Ignorance, huh, jimmy? Sometimes I wonder if you intentionally misread things.
went to the stadium last thursday, was jam packed by Malaysian supporters with number of attendance reported aroung 90k+....quite a record for a Malaysian national team match...that showed how passionate and supportive our local supporters nowadays...
with Safiq Rahim suspended...our midfield seemed lack of idea and further trouble when Aidil had to be subbed due to injury...Singaporean team did everything to make sure they wasted every seconds they can, by falling on the pitch and crying like a baby wanting the stretcher to take them off...and all we got is just 5min of xtra time???
respect goes to the supporters who never gave up their supports and chants even when there seems to be no hope left for us....they stayed on their seats until the final whistle....and the players applauded to us after the game together with apologizing gestures towards the fans for their support...it was a sad night but we should be proud of them...they worked hard but luck wasn't on their side....
at least our players are 100% Malaysian, born and raised here...unlike them who had no trust in their own local player, relying heavily on foreigner PR instead...good luck with that...

Time to reignite this place! Malaysia about to play Singapore in a few minutes in the first game of the SEA Games. We're defending champions and hopefully we'll put up a good show in this year's edition. Doesn't help that we have Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand in our group! Vietnam have practically got a cakewalk in Group B!

Well, a point's better than a loss.
Really don't like the current national team jersey. It makes the players look like they've been run over by a truck.

May be better than a loss but that was painful to watch. No creativity or cutting edge whatsoever. Need a massive improvement against Thailand tomorrow.
Picked up a good win over Thailand; some good finishing when it mattered most. Squandered a lot of chances though but I thought we definitely had the upper hand in that game. Victory over Cambodia on Sunday should see us through to the semis.

My god it's been almost a year now since I posted anything here. So, yeay for me I guess? :p
Anyway, it's been hitam kuning, hitam kuning, hitam kuning, hitam kuning here in Malaysia!
We played well, although could've won without even going into the extra time if the strikers managed to do their job right. But still in the end, we are the ASEAN champions yet again. So, yeay again I guess? :D
So anyway, will try to be more active here again. And nice to see you still alive and kickin' May!

And then we turn around and lose to Syria in the Olympic qualifier.......

Heh. I guess we are not at that level yet, then?
Maybe after ASEAN we should slowly try Asian region first and see how far we could go. Plus I think the youngsters need more exposure to outside football. As Kim Swee said, we need so send the whole team, rather than just a few, to gain experience outside.
It'll take time, but I can see some light. :)

That's the problem that's been plaguing Malaysian football for as far back as I can remember, though - we embarrass ourselves, then start making progress, then pick up a signature win or two somewhere, and then inevitably regress. Rinse and repeat - story of the FAM and the national team.

There is definite improvement. I'm seeing it firsthand.
But last night's result against Bahrain was terribly disappointing. Leading 2-0 with 10 minutes to go, we somehow threw it all away against the 10 men of Bahrain. Stunned. We played very well throughout the game up until the 80th minute, and all the best chances and openings were created by us. We should've won that game but to be fair, our keeper couldn't do much about their first two goals. The third goal was a mistake but also all the momentum was with Bahrain by then.
The definite bright spot is the emergence of Nazmi Faiz; the kid is only 17 and is very comfortable and composed on the ball. Hopefully he'll go from strength to strength.
