Since I'll be getting a number of Bundesliga matches on GolTV this season I figure I should pick a club to support. I have never really watched much Bundesliga and have no ties to any club.

If 1860 Munich was in the top division I'd support them as their supporters have some link with Chelsea

For excitement,it was great watching Werder Bremens game's last season.Very high scoring side and involved in some real thrillers.

If you like clubs with lots of fans Dortmund and Schalke are good.

If you like clubs with history Hamburg and Bayern.

Basically what I would suggest is just watch the games and let the team pick you.:D

Either way, it is a fun league with lots of goals.

I generally dont support any teams in Germany, just lots of players I like.

indomitable_lion
12-08-2006, 06:42 PM
I would recommend you look at Schalke, Hamburg, and Weder Bremen. My recommendation is Hamburg. This is a stretch but they're like the Spurs or Hammers of German football. They play a fast paced game with the ball on the ground and when they have they full squad, they're very rarely boring.

I think you capped the end of season game between bremen and hamburg for a champions league spot last season. That should tell you the kind of football both teams are known for. I recommend Hamburg because I support them but if you don't choose Hamburg, try Bremen.

Frankfurt are one of the best teams in the lower half. They were the surprise package last year, beating Schalke 6-0 in the German cup. They went all the way to the final and lost to Bayern (as expected ;) ). Since you're a Chelsea supporter I'm not sure you can handle their roller coaster ride of wins and losses. ;)

with bayern you either like them or hate them. and since you would support 1860 then i would suggest you not support bayern.

I'm in the same situation. Never really watched the Bundesliga consistently like I do with other leagues but now that it's on GolTv I will be. First couple of games have been fantastic. Personally I just like watching the matches and I look out for certain players to see how they're doing. Other than Cruzeiro there is no other team in the world I root for or support, I just like watching football from all over the world.

Do you really need a team to support or do you just think it would be more fun that way? Never really thought about it like that.

Do you really need a team to support or do you just think it would be more fun that way? Never really thought about it like that.

Don't need a club to support, but I usually have one or two clubs that I like in each league I follow.

For example I've been following Ligue 1 since the mid 90's and PSG was the side I payed the most attention to. Can't even rememeber why now, but for whatever reason I root for them.

However when they played Chelsea in the CL I obviously supported Chelsea, I'm a True Blue and not about to switch :D

I see. Well obviously the teams to look out for are Munich, Leverkusen, Shalke04 and Werder Bremen. Werder has a tremendous team, Klose, Zidan (Egyptian), Diego, Wome, Frings  Should be fun.

Yesss Hans Meyer is a genius!
You can compare him with Otto Rehagel or Brian Clough,
he`s winning alot of matches with small teams.
Great Coach, great person!
I hope he gets the chance to become champion one day, so he would realy get in the line with those 2 great coaches i mentioned above.

Everyone please concider Werder Bremen as a club that operates very different in many ways compared to clubs like Bayern München, Schalke04 or Hamburg. Those clubs are controlled by very arrogant managements (okay maybe not the HSV) with a total different background of money.

Bremen is a very small town (pop. ~500 000) with a bad infrastructure for a football club but they always managed to stay in a good position.

While other clubs switch coach after coach, Werder Bremen gives the coaches a chance to realize their work in a long term.
Werder is really something different!

If you like understatement more than bragging, then Werder should be your no. 1 :)

Yeah. That has to be one of the stories of last season.

Another team that hasn't been mentioned is VFB Stuttgart. They were disappointing last season finishing 9th but have quitely added some talented players;notably the Mexican duo of Ricardo Osorio and Pavel Pardo. Attacking midfielder Alexander Farnerud has joined from Strausborg and Ljuboja has made his loan move permanent.
Some other 'famous' players are Meira (played in WC for Portugal), Thomas Hitzlsperger and Markus Babbel.

i do agree that bremen do handle things a lot differently but bayern are stingy bastards when it comes to money. we do have money but we dont spend it freely and we arent very arrogant. there is some arrogance yes, but we are the best :p ;)

Well, my favourite would be Borussia Dortmund, a team full of youngsters, that are keen to play good and successful football. After the mid90's, where the club bought a lot of arrogant players, that only cost money but played awful football the club went insolvent. However, this fault won't be made a second time. I'd also vote for them because the fans of BVB 09 are the best in the whole wide country, friendly, imaginative and loud.

If you prefer such clubs, you could also support Mainz 05, who recently beat the CL Winners of 05 with ... 5:0 :(
They are quite similar to Borussia Dortmund imo, especially when it comes to friendly fans and a young and hungry team.

Borussia Dortmund have been at or near the top of Europe for the last few seasons in average attendence figures.
They're a club for the working class man, as the local area used to be a coal mining area back in the day. They've suffered from poor management of late, but seem to be righting the ship.
My 2nd favourite team is 1. FC Koln.
Strangely enough, I've never been to Dortmund, my folks are from Koln & Hannover.

I would say go with Hamburg. They are a great club who are starting to come back into power in the Bundesliga. They are fun to watch and have very good fans. Plus if you want to go see a game the town is a very fun place. I spent 2 weeks there for an exchange last summer and plan to go back next summer as well and hopefully will get to see a game there :D

Or if you would like a smaller club to root for you can follow a team called FC St Pauli. They are a team in the Regional Nord division which is the third division basically. They are a very small club in Hamburg with fans that are very passionate for their team.

These are the 2 teams that i support from germany because of my friends in germany.

You could call the club VFL Volkswagen instead of VFL Wolfsburg *g*
Volkswagen is pumping so much money into this club for years now, but as most of you know they hardly avoided 2nd League last season.
They´ll have success one day, no question. They have the money but its still not fitting. But the time will come sooner or later.
Btw the new player Santana from Argentina is very interesting!

After watching a little of them in the Bundesliga last season, as well as the Champions League, Werder Bremen are the team I'm rooting for. I enjoyed watching them and after two games this season, they are even better. The signing of Diego from Porto is probably one of the most overlooked buys of the summer. He's such an incredible talent, I still can't believe he was left to rot on the Porto bench last year. This guy has the ability to really carry this team. He's played a part in all of Werder's goals this season after two rounds. With him, Klasnic, and Klose, Werder have a deadly triple-threat.
I'm so glad GolTv picked up the Bundesliga, looks like its going to be a very competitive season.

If you want to always be on the winning side of the scale as a fan, then you should go with Bayern because they seem to be winning everything this year.

I for one am always an underdog guy because it makes me more excited...Hamburg SV, Werder Bremen, or Schalke are all strong candidates for the league championship usually. They are also the main teams that pose threats to Bayern.

I follow Bundesliga for only one reason, a lot of Iranian internationals play there (Hamburg, Hannover96, Bayern). So just mainly to follow up on my national team players.

Bundesliga had filled up my time last year, I didn't get a chance to follow any other leagues. This year it's different, I'm less concerned about it and am concentrating more on EPL and La Liga.

Just wondering, why is there a "1." in front of the name?

It means "First/1st" in German. "Second/2nd" would be "2.", "third/3rd" would be "3." and so on.
Quite a number of Football Clubs have that in Germany. (1. FC Köln, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, 1. FC Dynamo Dresden....)

I am not sure though if it shall state that they are superior to other Football Clubs in that city or that they wanted to state tat they were the first Football Club in that city (1. FC Nürnberg was founded in May 1900).

Maybe somebody has more background info on the mysterious "1. FC *****" thing with our German clubs :)

jak914

the "1." does mean that this club is the first club in the city.
to jak:
the second team of 1.fc nürnberg is the 1.fc nürnberg II.
btw, the second teams of the professional teams in germany are now called u23 because in these teams only 3 (i think) players above 23 are allowed, the teams are used to form the youth.

I'd like to know just one thing what the hell happened to Hamburg???

How about Energie Cottbus? Not only a quality name, but the captain is a Canadian...

Yup, and they played a good game against Werder Bremen today. :)

St Pauli (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_St._Pauli) are a nice interesting club to support, though they are in the 2. Bundesliga at the moment IIRC.

They played saturday against Werder, today Werder is playing Nurnberg.

St. Pauli are in 3rd division: Regionala Nord.
