Espanyol want to be awarded the Spanish Super Cup after Carles Puyol and Xavi played for Barcelona against them only days after claiming that they were unfit to play for Spain.

The Parakeets explained that they wrote to Fifa, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and Barca to state their objection to the inclusion of the two players and demanded that they be made winners by default.

"In the case of ineligible players being fielded the innocent club, in this case Espanyol, has to be declared as the winner of the tie," Espanyol's director general, Pedro Tomas said.

He then explained that his club were launching the complaint because under Fifa regulations any player that pulls out of an international match through injury cannot play for their club for the next five days.

Puyol and Xavi underwent tests in Madrid with the national team doctor and both were told that they were not fit enough to play and were sent back to Barcelona.

Spain played Iceland in Reykjavik on Tuesday without the duo, but 48 hours later the two players started for Frank Rijkaard's team against Espanyol.

The complaint is due to be heard at 4pm (CET) on Sunday, just six hours before the second leg is due to be played, but Tomas insists that the game will still go ahead.

A solitary goal from Ludovic Giuly won the first leg of the Super Cup for the Blaugrana between the Spanish league winners and the Copa del Rey champions at Montjuic.

if aragones had bloody listened to the club, xavi and puyol wouldnt have been included in the spanish squad to begin with. since they are both recovering from either slight injuries, illness, knee operations or lack of fitness. barca requested they not be included so they had enough time to recover and prepare for the supercopa. but aragones didnt listen and instead, 2 days before the match they were declared unfit by spain's doctors. why bother with all this shit if he wasnt going to use them anyway? they clearly didnt want to risk themselves over a meaningless friendly, so they could play in a match that has immediate silverware on the line.

both players were substituted, as clearly rijkaard didnt want to strain them too badly but definitely needed their presence. they probably would have been fit to play for spain, but who knows? maybe those 2 days of rest were essential in allowing them to be ready for the 1st leg of the supercopa?

overturning this result would be ridiculous and is a pathetic ploy be espanyol who clearly dont care how they win and want that trophy any way they can get it. i wasnt aware of this rule regarding international players who are declared unfit to play not being able to play for 5 days for their club, seems a bit silly to me. the club pays them, they are their players. they should be able to do what they want with them.

The fact is that we all know the innocence of what barca did. But pleading ignorance here cannot save them. If what the guy said was true, that he told them before the match and also faxed Fifa before the match, then yes he has every right to moan. I can imagine if they said that they wouldn't play, they would have been fined. I understand that they lost but let us know what happened behind the scenes before we cast judgements. If there is a rule, then the rule should be followed. That is all that is really needed. If one breaks the rule, then they have to be punished as it is seen fit.

If barca knew before the match that they should not have fielded the players, then they shouldn't have. There is nothing hard there for them to know. However, if this is just a ploy by Espanyol with no credibility to the claim, then they should be punished as seen fit for bringing the game into dispute.

There should be nothing there hard to understand. Hopefully the more light can be shed on the case and on how the laws are really written. For all we know he might be misinterpreting it. But if he is not, the barca ahs a big question to answer.

Edit: Hey barca has nothing to worry about. This just came in.

So I think barca are going to win this one now. Espanyol has no excuse.

The only way to beat Barca this year is to take the games to the court.
And even there it will fail to do any harm. :D

So I guess that settles that... I was worried until the point where it said that espnayol informed the players before the match and yet they played...I figured that Barca must've consulted their legal team and they gave the OK. And now the verdict is in our favor...case closed. :)

this was utter shite..talk about trying to rob a spectacle
reminds me of alaves trying to impugn messi's perfectly legal incorporation to the team last year
this kind of thing has become all too common in la liga and I think penalties should be brought to teams that baselessly try to rob others by creating controversy off the pitch
