Manchester United, Benfica and FC Copenhagen...

Should have a decent chance to qualify for the next round, don't you think? Or at least continue in the UEFA cup.

Btw... if any of you lads come to Copenhagen, be sure to let me know. I would be more than happy to buy you a pint :)

They should come second at the very least, and at the very max.

Most Celtic Fans that I have met seems to be wonderful and positive people.

When they go to Sweden they sing songs praising Henrik Larsson in the pubs.
And there is never any trouble, only smiles. I hope the danish fans will be the same.

Okay... but what do the Celtic fans think? ;)

I don't give a toss about the rock, PortGlasgow is a bit biased and DanneS just wants to rave about Henke :)

PS:

I know it's a bit of a longshot, but do any of you Celts know this lad?

His name is Steve. Met him and some of his friends at Stansted. We both had to spend the night there and it was funny as fuck. We had been to Barcelona and Celtic had played some Eastern European team... Steve got pissed out of his fucking head! He couldn't even walk!!

i seem to have a soft corner for Celtic but i don't see them getting past the group stage UEFA cup at the most.

But i have been proven wrong by them before, holding upto the likes of Barca and Juve in crazy situations :)

I will be absolutely astonished if Celtic qualify for the last 16.Much better Celtic sides have failed to do so in groups of 'equal' strength and they still haven't won a CL game away from Parkhead.

Saying that, the worst Rangers team in 20 odd years manged to do it last season,so anything is possible.

Looking at a few Man Utd boards and it seems the 'shpeshal relationship' between the two teams is all but gone. There may be a bit of an atmosphere and possible trouble when these two meet again.:(

We will qualify from this group no bother , take a draw 1st game at old trafford then 2 home wins on the trot vs Benfica & Copenhagen, ill not be going to any games as of yet since im piss poor :D

Falling back into the Uefa cup is the least we should expect from this group as Copenhagen should be just happy to be there lol.

adammac_19
25-08-2006, 12:19 PM
Well I think Celtic whole chance of Qualifying depends on who they do vs Benfica becasue more than likely the mank will be there. But then again I thought the same last season but they were knocked out and Benfica got through so it really is hard to predict things but I think this could be a interesting group

PortGlasgow
25-08-2006, 12:25 PM
Benfica is a tough side, didnt they top Man Utd's group and put them out. Copenhagen knocked out Ajax in Amsterdam.

Fenian a draw at old trafford? c'mon mate :D

/sounds a bit arrogant pal but I think after last season the standard of football in the SPL is at an all time low. Just looking at the Hibs, Gretna & Hearts performances theyve been torn apart by mediocre teams

The signing of Hesselink has added a lot to the team, he's exactly what we need. Our strongest team atm in my opinion is:

-----------Hesselink-------------
Maloney----------------McGeady
-----------Nakamura------------
-------Petrov---Jarosik----------
--------------------------------
Naylor--Balde--McManus--Wilson
-----------Boruc---------------

I don't think Naylor is anything above average and McManus isn't the greatest either. Other than that it's a very good team imo.

I can't wait to see Nakamura in the Champions league. He struggles at away grounds in the SPL but is always superb at Celtic park and the style of play of European teams will suit him. He's probably the best passer I've ever seen play for Celtic. He's also hugely intelligient football wise. When he moves into the centre he controls our play.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Maloney. He hasn't really had much Champions league experience but he won SPL young player and senior player of the year last season after coming back from a long term injury. He got 16 goals and 23 assists last season and would probably be our Farfan for Hesselink to work with.
McGeady has played in the CL a few times despite being the youngest player in the team. He is in the form of his life atm and hopefully it continues. Petrov and Jarosik are well established at Champions league level, as is Balde. Wilson has been one of Strachan's best buys. Probably his best considering the price. Boruc is excellent too.
Then there's Zurawski, Miller, Riordan and Beattie who won't be happy to sit on the bench.

According to reports today Celtic and Newcastle have agreed personal terms with Graveson so that would be a superb signing.

I'd put us the 3rd best team in the group. I don't think we'll be beaten at home though. We should beat Copenhagen at home and hopefully Benfica. Maybe a draw against Man Utd at home will suffice. It could boil down to the last game in Copenhagen.

DanneS

And there in Copenhagen Bruun will be waiting for y'all with plenty of booze and pretty ladies to make you feel at home. :D

I hope seriously for either Celtic or FC Copenhagen to get a second place in the group.
That last game in Copenhagen could be a thriller.

Good post Eirebhoy nice to see more hoops fans on here, your definetly right about the midfield, options galore, defence & keeper on its day could keep anyone out, jst hoping Hesselink, Zurawski, Millar, and my favourite Beattie the beast start putting the ball in the net.

Definetly have to have McGeady in there , but for every game this season ive seen with Jarosik , hes the laziest bas ive ever seen in the hoops , must take a while for all those bad habits he learnt in England to vanish , Maloney too i'm sure with that formation wgs would give Zurawski the shout before Shaun.

anyway my opinion on the groups is EASY EASY EASY.

If Celtic dont beat Copenhagen twice, we should withdraw from European football for the foreseable future.

In the world cup he always kept the ball for Japan...hardly ever gave it away, even against brazil (I know they were crap but still better that Benfica!!)

Fenianbhoy

Yeh Nakamura is a wonderfull passer of the ball , but for all the times he has the ball at his feet with only 1 man in front of him, and passes it to the opposite side of the park (albeit to a players toes), if he could drive forward with the ball and learn to dribble he'd be a world beater.

People thought Nakamura would be a bit of a lightweight in the Scottish league, hes shown he can take a kick or two , but still alot of character to been seen in him whether he can get fired up an dig when the going gets tough.

There's no doubt he will make some folk look silly in the Cl but that wont be too hard, Man U & Benfica already booking QF tickets & Copenhagen looking forward to the Uefa cup ;).

In the confederations cup last year he got man of the match against Brazil and Greece. Along with Riquelme was regarded as player of the tournament. Just a crazy fact but Nakamura and Riquelme were born on the exact same day. Messi also has the same birthday but is 9 years younger than both. :)

No WGS would have prefered Real madrid or Barca as would have Lennon and a Few of us fans, Even tho Celtic has Played Man U loads of time's in friendlys galore and wgs has came up against Man Utd as a manager in his Career enough times for him.

Its enough times to be bored with it. Real would have been great we have played all the other big teams over the years.

Looking at a few Man Utd boards and it seems the 'shpeshal relationship' between the two teams is all but gone. There may be a bit of an atmosphere and possible trouble when these two meet again.:(

Unlike Rangers, Celtic have never had to have a pre-season FRIENDLY cancelled down in England on the advice of the local constabulary through fear of supporter trouble. Every pub in Manchester was shut for the day when Rangers travelled down there for the CL a few years ago as well for the same reason if i remember right.

Celtic have been welcomed down in England for matches for years without any hint of trouble, so there's no reason to think that our visit to Manchester will be anything out of the ordinary.

As far as the actual football is concerned, our home form in the CL over the past few years has been up there with the best. I believe that we've got a style of play under Strachan that will improve our prospects in away games this time as well, plus the big signings of Vennegoor of Hesselink and Gravesen have given everyone a big boost ahead of the CL campaign.

We're definitely capable of getting through this group as far as i'm concerned.

Unlike Rangers, Celtic have never had to have a pre-season FRIENDLY cancelled down in England on the advice of the local constabulary through fear of supporter trouble.Wrong.A pre season friendly arranged at short notice.BotlonFC seriously underestimated the number of travelling fans.........when they took their revised numbers to the Police a few days before the game, after seeing ticket sales, the Police decided they didn't have the manpower to cover the event since there were other major events in Manchester that night.
Not one single press release from the Police suggested they were expecting bother.........they just didn't plan for so many to be travelling.

Every pub in Manchester was shut for the day when Rangers travelled down there for the CL a few years ago as well for the same reason if i remember right.Aye,right.

No one in Manchester got a pint that day.

There was a total over reaction as usual........Newcastle,Derby etc No problems

Celtic have been welcomed down in England for matches for years without any hint of trouble, so there's no reason to think that our visit to Manchester will be anything out of the ordinary.Aherm......Chelsea a few weeks ago.

The last game at OT there was trouble in the stands.

If yer gonna sing about terrorists in a city thats centre was majorly atacked by those same folk, killing children, you're gotta expect a bit of a backlash. There was one and there will be one next time.

Yep, Hartson is another Celtic player who has improved 100% since leaving Celtic through those of the blue-tinted glasses persuasion. ;)

Our signings from the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and PSV Eindhoven are all duds apparently - we'd have been far better off taking the biscuit tin approach of Le Revolution and raiding the dizzy heights of Austrian football and that world superpower Austria Vienna for new players instead i'm sure. :D

Every pub within a certain, and lengthy, radius within Old Trafford was ordered to be closed by local plod because Rangers fans were travelling down - and the chief of police responsible for what would have been a Bolton - Rangers match is on record as saying that they feared crowd trouble if Rangers fans visited, hence why it was cancelled.

Those two are 100% fact.

Sorry, but Nelly has already admitted that there were orders from police in Manchester to close down pubs when he admitted to there being a so-called "over-reaction" to Rangers fans travelling down, so he must be making it up too.

By the way, Vennegoor of Hesselink is also 4 years younger than Hartson and is now an integral part of the Dutch International squad - to say that Celtic's move in replacing the two is anything but a good piece of business are the utterances of someone who has no idea of what they're talking about, or a Rangers fan living in denial after false dreams of a big-spending revolution turned to dust over the summer. :D

I don't know where you get your information but there was never any promises of big money made available.........£4-5M was what I,and many others, were expecting.I think it's been spent reasonably well.

Clement.......captained the U21 French team the other night. The same team that ran poor Mark Wilson ragged.Sebo.........4 goals in his last 2 internationals, although I've yet to be convinced about him.Sionko.......set up 2 and scored 2 in his last 2 internationals. Not too shabby if you ask me.

I think Benfica will be a strong team at home, but looking at their qualifying results i noticed they only managed to draw with Austria Vienna away from home, who are a poor side (although improving thanks to PLG taking some of their dross :D), so i'm not sure how well they're capable of playing away from Da Luz - if they've got a weakness there then it's the sort of thing we have to take advantage of to progress.

Jesus, no offense but that is the biggest load of rubbish I've read on this forum. :) McGeady was absolutely terrible. He couldn't find a teammate all night. It was 100% down to nerves though as he's quality on his day. Nakamura put in an average performance by his standards and I thought he was our best player after Boruc. He's just so classy and that goal will do his confidence the world of good. I was certain he'd score that freekick, it couldn't have been placed better for him.

80,000 travelled to Seville, 7 arrests. There's as much trouble with Celtic travelling support as their is with Ireland's, ie. very little. I've been the many Celtic and Ireland games. I'd like you to provide links to your claims. I have registered at Celtic minded and redcafe so either will do. Cheers.

As for the Chelsea game, 100's of Chelsea fans attacked Celtic fans and Celtic fans didn't even retaliate. Hooligans were out to cause trouble that day and Celtic fans are the last fans in the world to cause trouble.

If you are registered then there should be no problem for you or anyone else to find them.
Redcafe:

"Bit of trouble before the game, right near Red Star.
Was all going fine until Celtic started singing YNWA and obviously some United fans reacted, throwing glass bottles and cans and a Celtic fan got punched. Police got involved and went away.
Sad end to a great 15 mins of taking it in turns of singing. "

Is that the trouble you're talking about?

"Best game I've been at in a long time. Both sets of fans were amazing and I saw no trouble at all. Roll on the next one."

Celtic fans don't start fights. Do not accuse us of doing so as it's abolute crap. Of course there'll be fights if opposing fans bloody start them.

Celtic fans don't start fights. Do not accuse us of doing so as it's abolute crap. I didn't.I said there was trouble,I made no mention of instigators.Another 'fact'?

I've been to enough Cel-Ran games, and got a few bruises,to know what I'm talking about.I got chased by 4 adults when I was 14yo,down Craigton Road in Govan for no reason other than being a Rangers fan on my way home from Ibrox.Ask the poster PortGlasgow about his run ins with TGFINW.

The 'shpeshul' relationship is well and truly over, that's for sure.If there ever was one. Various threads on celtic boards with "ManU are scum","Fuck ManU" as titles would testify to that. There's no harm in that as ManUtd are scum.;)

Hey,Lions.......I notice how you just deny everything without acually having a reason other than saying I'm talking shit. How many banning orders were enforced after the battle of Blackburn?;) :D

If you still don't believe me.........try getting a copy of John O'kanes autobiography. The well know Celtic hooligan loves to brag about all the fights he's started at Celtic games,home/abroad.You can usually find him propping up the bars of the vile slophouses around the Gallowgate. He got knocked out twice in one day in different parts of Glasgow.Surely that's impressive?:p

If your referring to the Toll Gate pub or whatever it was you never saw the fact that the neds who glassed some other guy in hoops and then kicked off the skirmish got away with it? Did you see they were then walking down the street abusing anyone that was vaguley related to Man United? They were an embarrassment..........but of course, that never happened.;) :p

tbh, we are "peace loving jolly craicsters" when it comes to European games. Almost every city we travel there ends up being a csc been set up. If people want to start fights because Celtic fans cheer a goal or sing ynwa then so be it.

Pretty pathetic attitude to take Nelly that you appear to be so delighted about there being a wee bit of bother at Old Trafford last week, where's your dignity? The phrase "people in glass houses..." springs to mind here after the disgraceful scenes when the Rangers support visited Vila-Real last season.

Anyway, away from the juvenile conversation and onto what really matters. Celtic showed with their performance last week that we're definitely good enough to get through the group, if it wasn't for a couple of errors on our part then we could have taken at least a point from one of the tournament favourites on their own ground. It was also nice to disappoint the huns who were desperate for the Mancs to give us a hammering. :)

3 points against Copenhagen next week are an absolute must now.

Gronkjaer is out for the match next week. Even though he's not the greatest of players, it can only be good news that he's out. I'd worry about any winger of his pace against our full backs.

Balde is back but I think Strachan will stick with Caldwell and McManus unless he plays Caldwell at right back.
It's great to see Maloney back but where does he fit in? McGeady was very poor against Man U but I don't think he'll be dropped for the next match. Maloney might have to sit it out on the bench for a while.

I don't know how good Copenhagen are but I do know that we've beaten better teams at Celtic park. I can't see anything but a win tbh. Only the Pot 1 teams would I not expect to beat at home.

Dear God mate, cheer up. You'd think we'd been gubbed 7-0 or something!

It was always gonna be an awkward match with the physical way FCK play their football, and it was made all the tougher considering the fact we'd ran ourselves into the ground only a few days earlier in the Old Firm win, you could see in the last 20 mins that the players were dead on their feet and just had to grind out the win.

I'll take another one or two ugly 1-0 grinding wins if it means we're into the knockout stages thanks very much!

Good win last night against Benfica, their biggest defeat in 2 years. Miller was fantastic.
Correction:
Celtic were fantastic great performance by the team tonight, glad to see pearson getting on and scoring! not to mention all the great performances of players we have at our disposal here and now.

things we should take from this game, is our midfield which despite the loss of petrov is in place and able to take on whomever is in their way, solid centre backs who're strong and rise to the ocassion, a great striker who just seems on top of his game at the moment (kenny miller!)

let's not get ahead of ourselves, but i reckon we're on course for the knockout rounds, beating both man utd and benfica isn't that mad of an idea, topping the group would be good, worst comes to worst safe enough for uefa cup (not likely to happen!!! champions league here we are (to stay!))

on a sidenote, hope this aston villa/o'neil/maloney bullshit would be swept under the carpet and a new contract negotiated, would be very sad if he leaves us!

only saw short highlights... (i.e. the Maloney shot and the second half :) ) Celtic looked good going forward but didn't look like benfica offered much, don't know if that was because the were rubbish or if because Celtic played a good containing game... Miller looked good and according to a few of the radio phone ins so did Sno...

As for Maloney, it sounds like his management have persuaded him that he's worth more than Celtic are willing to pay.. would be a shame if he was to move from a Celtic POV BUT there is still McGeady AND if he was to play regularly down south and be successful it would be good for the national team

The Celtic fans had a tribute for Miklos Feher, the former Benfica player who died on the pitch two years ago, before the match last night. Here's the story from the official UEFA website.

Celtic stage Fehér tribute

http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Photo/competitions/UCL/475077_MEDIUMSQUARE.jpg

Their team may have lost - but Celtic FC's supporters left Lisbon with the praise and admiration of their Portuguese hosts after making a "wonderful gesture" in honour of former SL Benfica player Miklós Fehér.

'You'll never walk alone'
Fehér died in January 2004 after suffering a heart attack during a match between Benfica and Vitória SC, and the Celtic fans honoured his memory during last night's Group F game by displaying a banner bearing the Hungarian's name, shirt number and the words "Nunca caminharás sozinho" (You'll never walk alone).

Presentation
Following Benfica's 3-0 victory, captain Simão and striker Nuno Gomes were presented with the banner by Celtic supporters Roddy Mackay, Ritchie Feenie and David McAnsh. The trio helped raise around €1,500 in four days to pay for the banner – and handed the funds left over to Benfica, to be donated to a cardiac unit in Lisbon.

'Unique moment'
"It was a unique moment and a wonderful gesture and we want to say thank you," Nuno Gomes told uefa.com. "You don't see this often and fans around the world can learn a lot from these British supporters. We are very glad because every day we remember our friend Miki Fehér. He is always with us. This is a great display of fair play from an opposition club."

Lennon praise
Celtic captain Neil Lennon said: "You know how passionate these fans are, not just about their own club but about football worldwide. It's a tremendous gesture and they make us very proud.

Best of luck in your campaign in the Champion's League. You won, end off. Better game, more possession, whatever, it's the goals that matter, and you surely got a peach of a goal via Nakamura.

I hope you advance further, knocking out Chelsea, Arsenal and/or that gutter full of shit of a team Liverpool. I have always been a fan of teams who win with their team, for example Arsenal (I will deny this if it is ever mentioned again  ), rather than like Chelsea/ Real Madrid (who I will still support because of Ruud van Nistelrooy, call me a hypocrite, I don't give a fuck).

But, B.U.T but, if Manchester United meet you again, don't expect anything less than venom from me.

Best of luck Bhoys.

the two out that group i really worry about would be lyon and chelsea. at least we cant get barcelona or real madrid so its not all bad mate. like you said good luck trying to keep the score down lol

what you have to take into consideration bud is that we are dreadful away from home in the CL and you lot had to rely on a more than dodgy penalty ( well you got one in both matches actually) to beat us so you have to assume that anyone you get in the next round will be much stiffer oposition. thought you lot had a cheek complaining about our free kick at parkhead after giggs shocking dive in the first match. although i forgot no one dives in the english game thats just johnny foreigner that does that isnt it lol. lighten up mate
