Dont chicken out
The United States will receive a formal invitation to Copa America within 24 hours and will decide by the end of the month whether to play in South America's nations championship, U.S. Soccer Federation president Sunil Gulati said Monday.
Gulati, speaking at the ninth annual Honda Symposium, also said he has four to five serious candidates for the U.S. national team coaching job, and that announcement should be made within 30-to-60 days.
"We were looking to name a coach in the fall, and I think that is still on target," Gulati said. "Sometime in the November period we expect to name a coach."
Gulati decided not to renew manager Bruce Arena's contract, which expires at the end of the year, after the United States was eliminated in the first round of the World Cup in June. Arena has since taken over the New York Red Bulls.
The candidates for the job are based both in the United States and overseas, Gulati said. Published reports have mentioned that among the candidates are former German national team manager Juergen Klinsmann, former Argentine national coach Jose Pekerman, former English national team manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, D.C. United coach Peter Nowak and Los Angeles Galaxy coach Frank Yallop.
Gulati said he has discussed playing in the Copa America with each of the candidates.
The United States twice before played in the Copa America, in 1993 and 1995. It has avoided the tournament since the 1996 start of Major League Soccer, which has a season that runs from April to November.
The CONCACAF Gold Cup is set for June 6-24, with the Copa America scheduled for June 26-July 15 in Venezuela.

If they don't take this invitation, they are wussies.
I think they could do reasonably well, better than Ecuador, probably on par with Paraguay.

Jose Pekerman for USA coach?!?! man...i wouldnt know what to think. He's a fantastic coach...I had just hoped to see him stick with the south american teams, or perhaps...dare i dream...a hard working african squad?
But the USA going to the Copa...They might do ok if they play the previous month together in the Gold Cup. But we'll see...good luck to them. I hope they get alot from the experience if they go.

dude, did you watch the qualifying or the WC? Ecuador is good.
I think they have to accept. How stupid can they continue to be? Plus, a fair number of players are in Europe now and have a season different from the MLS.
Klinsi, Pekerman and Nowak (he's done a great job at DC) are all decent candidates in that order. I'm glad they're considereing non-US candidates finally. Too bad there are no available Dutch mercenary coaches when you need one.
Why on earth anyone would consider Eriksson is beyond me. Not just because England did so poorly, but the guy is one scandal after another. He should stay in club footie.

People shouldn't complain if the US doesn't accept the invitation. If the South American nations don't take the Copa America seriously, why should anyone else?
If every team were to send their stongest squads the tournament would be so much better.

We get invited to the Copa every time, but we have rejected the invitations because of the MLS season.
Personally, I think we should take it: any extra competition would be good for us and the new coach.

last time we went (Uruguay) I recall doing quite well, getting tossed by Brasil 1-0
I've always wondered why we don't do it every time, assumed we weren't invited. I'd love to see it become a regular thing

I guess they feel that the Gold Cup and Copa in the same summer would hurt the MLS season too much.

You beat Argentina 5-0 last time in 1995 and they had a bunch of great players including Batistuta!!! Btw, I have US's last match in the Copa America against Brasil. I could put it up if anyone's interested.

I don't think it's about that necessarily. It's a competition that's still pretty important and I think the main thing would be for the US players to gain experience in tournaments like this. It would be worth it for the US even if they sent younger players.
If every team were to send their stongest squads the tournament would be so much better.
Yeah, that's how it was a while ago and it was great. Obviously much better then it is now.

Some of the world's greatest players emerged from the Copa America in 04 I dont know where your getting that they dont take it seriously. Players like Fabiano, Adriano, Alex, Mashcherano, Tevez, Heinze and so on.

But would you rather have a developement tournament, or one that involves the best players possible?

Lets hope USA does accept. I dont understand why they wouldnt? Scared to be embarrassed? They need to play on the top levels of competition if they ever want football to be big.

I have to agree. I watched most of the last tournament while I was in S. America at the time and the only thing disappointing was the stupid theme song. I wanted strangle the tv set everytime that girl was singing.
Hopefully they'll get an actual star to sing it this time, don't think that Shakira is into footie, but perhaps Paulina Rubio is available? She can't sing either, but I have my reasons;)

wrong tournament buddy :p
Thething I want to know is how USA will do In Gold CUp. I don't think the U.S.S.F want to bring all their big guns to two tournaments in two months. And If usa gets knocked out of the gold cup, there wil be hell to pay. With teams like South Africa, Honduras, and panama USA should win every time(Mexico always takes a yung team, with no vets), even if they are only starting 6 out of 11 starters...

it help Mexico when they joined the cup since 93 why wouldn't the United States go for this opportunity. the decision hasn't been reached though.
The US has accepted the invitation. Spanish link (http://www.ole.clarin.com/jsp/v4/pagina.jsp?pagId=01300142&fecha=20061030) :)
PS: Rmagia9 ... didn't the US beat Pasarellas' NT 3-0? It was a shocker for them, even playing with subs ... as the end result was playing Brazil in 4ters and losing in PKs after Tulio tying it in the 85th in his Maradonian impersonation.
PS2: Please ... u/l all and any game you have from past Copa Americas. :D

I think we have a chance if Brazil and Argentina bring weak u-23 teams like they have in the past.

i said maybe not ;)
I think Mexico could do it.. but realistically USA has no chance, hopefully they at least get to the second round :o
Good luck to USA. It can only mean that they get better ;)

I don't like your winking face. Because your statement is totaly true. Realistically US chance has about as much chance of Levski Sofia winning their group in this years Champions League.
Don't get me wrong I love the US, but They most likely wont get past the semis(if they missed Bra & Arg in the knockout phase they could get to the final). But Jurgen is pretty much all but signed, and after a Gold CUp championship they could put together a nice little run.
I'm very eager to see how Klinsmanns first summer with the US MNT turns out. We'll have the Gold Cup & Copa America. As well as the World Youth Championship.
