Villarreal have signed the Chilean youngster for 9 million Euros from Colo Colo and will arrive in the transfer window in January. It is no surprise that Pellegrini has bet on him, as the Villarreal coach is also Chilean ... but it goes way beyond that. Fernandez is rapidly becoming Chile's biggest hopes for the future, where they already estimate that Fernandez will surpass with time the international performances of their 2 biggest football stars, Zamorano and Salas.

Villarreal have in him a player that can be a playmaker or 2nd forward ... fast, amazing technique and very good shot in set pieces. Many, including some of the most respected footy journalists don't hesitate to place him in the levels of Messi and Aguero. His performances in the present Sudamericana Cup only ratify these views.

Keep an eye on him ... he is trully a pleasure to watch. And will add tons to Villarreal.

Matigol made his debut this afternoon in the 0-1 defeat at home to Valencia.

Matias showed a pretty decent showing ... but, damn! Guille Franco is certainly useless upfront. Villarreal should sell him back to a Mexican club and put a few extra $$ and bring Pavone. They need a goalscorer upfront.

Or see if Riquelme can get along with Pellegrini again and play a 4-5-1 with only Forlan upfront but with Matias and Cani arriving from behind. And leave Roman to place the thru balls.

A 7/10 for Matias today, by far Villarreal's best player ... and it was only his first game with his new team mates. ;)

These are really good news. Looking forward to see him playing for Villareal.

Mati Fernandez has a great year with Colo Colo along with Humberto Suazo. They won both Apertura and Clausura and reached the final of Sudamericana. He was voted player of the year in South America surpassing players like Palacio.
His first performance against Valencia was decent and he has the biggest chance for Villareal after hitting the post.

Caught a bit of the Villarreal - Levante game and saw him make some good powerful runs. Gonna try and catch more of him in the coming weeks.

He is playing every game and is doing good. Villarreal are not having a good campaign even before he arrived.

As to his nationality, he has a Chilean mother and moved to Chile as a small kid. He is Chilean in every sense, as he grew up there. The most important thing is that he developed his football skills in Chile, not Argentina.

But he was born in Argentina, right? Therefore his nationality is Argentinean ;)
