Maradona says time for Hugo Sanchez to coach Mexico
MEXICO CITY, Nov 10 (Reuters) - Former Argentina captain Diego Maradona said on Friday it was time for former Real Madrid striker Hugo Sanchez, considered Mexico's best-ever player, to coach the national team.
On a visit to Mexico 20 years after lifting the World Cup there, Maradona said Sanchez was the ideal candidate to put together a Mexican squad capable of succeeding on the world stage, where they have been constant under performers.
"The time has come for Hugo," Maradona said. "For me, in my way of seeing things, he is the number one candidate."
Mexico's soccer federation is only days away from picking a new coach to replace Argentine Ricardo La Volpe, who stood down after the World Cup in Germany.
Americo Gallego, another Argentine and currently the coach of Mexican club Toluca, and Sanchez are the favourites for the job.
Sanchez, who won five consecutive league titles with Real Madrid in the 1980s alongside the likes of Emilio Butragueno and Michel, currently coaches Necaxa.
Sanchez, who was five times the top scorer in Spain's Primera Liga, and La Volpe often traded barbs when the Argentine headed Mexico's national team, with the outspoken striker openly saying he wanted La Volpe's job.

Well...Wayne Gretzkey got Canada a few Gold medals as a manager(though not as a coach), why not give him a shot. If he's proven at the club level that is.

So I have a question for you. Is Jorge Campos a good coach? I ask because he's one of the guys FC Dallas is going after to get as their new coach and I know he's one of the assistants for the Mexican team right now.

oh and
Hugo Sanchez, a former Real Madrid striker who is widely considered Mexico's best-ever player, was named national team coach on Thursday.
Sanchez, who won five consecutive league titles with Real Madrid in the 1980s alongside the likes of Emilio Butragueno, had been coach of Necaxa in Mexico's club championship.
Sanchez, 48, was five times the top scorer in Spain's Primera Liga He replaces Ricardo La Volpe, now manager at Argentina's Boca Juniors, as Mexican coach.
Known as "Hugol", a combination of his name and the word for "goal" in Spanish, Sanchez had long been tipped to coach Mexico.
"The time has come for Hugo," former Argentina captain Diego Maradona said last week.
Sanchez's outspoken nature and ranting about refereeing decisions had previously prompted the Mexican Football Federation to hand the job to other candidates.
As a player at club level, he won trophies galore. But his biggest soccer disappointment was at national level, with Mexico a constant underperformer in major championships.

I've been very busy with big life change stuff, not enough time in the day anymore.
This is good I guess, I hope Hugo can do well, I have my doubts, the article touches on what I'd fear, his temperament. He was a great player but as a player and a coach I've always felt he whines waaaay too much, he'll win no friends of refs or opponents, he doesn't appear to be capable of playing any mind games, or of controlling himself when even slightly provoked. He's been an easy target for winding up in the past.
Of course would love to see him reverse this trend/behavior and do well.

I think Campos should have gotten the coaching job. He was a great assistant, and was a great leader on the pitch. And Keepers are always vocal. Its also a plus that he dresses well.
Too bad he will be remembered for this

Want me to keep going? :p
But anybody could coach the Mexican national team to the world cup, hell I could, as long as I could get the players respect. Hugo is a little too dramatic in my opinion , but iI'm intrested to see how this will end up.
