I don't understand rules at Argentina league. I know about Apertura, Clausura. But don't understand about relegation and promotion. Anybody could help me? Give me explanations or links about rules at Argentina, Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, please.

Lets see.

First of, there are 2 tournaments, Apertura and Clausura. For example, for this year's tournament, it is:

Apertura 06: Aug-Dec 2006
Clausura 07: Feb-June 2007

At the end of the Clausura 2007 you will have the representatives for the Libertadores 2008 and the the Sudamericana Cup 2008.

How do they qualify?
The champ of the Apertura -> qualifies to both cups
The chanp of the Clausura -> qualifies to both cups

For the Libertadores ... the 3 other teams (that are not the 2 champs) that have the most points adding Apertura and Clausura. If the Libertadores champ of the previous year is Argentine, he would be qualified automatically, and an extra spot would open if that Libertadores champ is one of the 5 teams described in this paragraph.

For the Sudamericana ... the 4 other teams (that are not the 2 champs) that have the most points adding Apertura and Clausura. If the Sudamericana champ of the previous year is Argentine, he would be qualified automatically, and an extra spot would open if that Sudamericana champ is one of the 6 teams described in this paragraph. Note: Boca and River are invited to the Sudamericana Cup every year ... so, if they are not one of the 6 teams described above, they would take the spot of them.

As to the relegation ... it is a bit more complicated.

The 2 teams that have the lowest ratio:
total points/games played in the last 3 years
are relegated. Note that a newly promoted team would only have 1 year in the top flight. Some other teams could be in their 2nd year. That is why they use the # of games played and the # of points gained in those games.

The 3rd and 4th worst ratios have to play playoffs with the 3rd and 4th from the 2nd Division, out of which 2 clubs would play the following years top flight.

Hope it was clear enuff. :o
