Good to hear, this corruption needs to stop and as bad as it sounds, this is the only resolution.

oK..Now how is FIFA stop supposed to stop corruption or teach iran a lesson about government interferrece if they 'temporarily' end the ban before they could feel the punishment. According to FIFA they stopped it 'temporarily' so that Iran could compete in the 2007 Asian Cup. But my question is so you are making this 'exception' for them just because they have to compete in the Asian Cup but then how are they supposed to learn their lesson when FIFA makes an exception like this. I bet after the iranian lose to the AUSTRALIANS: GO SOCCEROOS:D FIFA will then reinstate the ban, only to lift it when World Cup qualifying starts.

The point is that they broke the rules, so they should be punished as such and not reprieved until they have fixed this problem

Temporary reprieve for the Iranians

DOHA: Iran will be allowed to compete in the Asian Games soccer tournament after FIFA provisionally lifted an international ban, organisers said yesterday.

FIFA had suspended Iran, who won the Asian Games title in 1974, 1990, 1998 and 2002, from all international competition last Thursday because of what they cited as government interference in the sport.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter told reporters at a soccer and business conference in Dubai that the world football’s governing body had received “alarming phone calls” from Iran over the past 24 hours.

“We have agreed with Iran a route that needs to be respected. We are going to give them until Dec 5 to do so,” he said.

“The ban is provisionally lifted. The Iranian team can participate at the Asian Games. If they fully agree to our roadmap .... we will lift the ban. But if the plans are not applied, then the ban will remain effective.”

FIFA’s emergency committee, composed of Blatter and one representative of each of the six FIFA confederations, suspended Iran’s football federation (IRIFF) from international activity “due to government interference in football matters”.

Asian Games organisers said with the lifting of the suspension, Sunday’s draw for the second round was void and that Iran would resume their place as the seeded team in Group D.

Iraq had replaced their neighbours as the seeded team in the group but will now return to their original position in Group E.

Tajikistan, who had sneaked into the main draw with Iran’s suspension, were dumped out of the competition.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said they had visited Tajikistan officials in Doha to give them the news.

The final 24 teams in the soccer tournament are split into six groups of four, with the group winners and two top runners-up going through to the quarter-finals. – Reuters
