It's about time!
The whole franchise has been dragging the league down :(

I would prefer another australian team, myself - I really just don't think it's a sport that the kiwis will get behind.
Leave them to their rugby :)

thats good news.

it doesn't mean that they'll get rid of the knights but at the very least someone is going to make them into a decent team.

why are you calling them "franchises" like american sports?

Because, they ARE franchises..

(It seems the article has been updated since i started the thread)

Perth has gone through very troubling time and has managed to maintain crowds between 6 - 10 thousand (albeit on the back of a strong nsl fan base).
In these past two seasons NZ hasn't managed to create something that even partially resembles a good crowd, nor did they manage that in the NSL as Football Kingz (if memory serves correct).
As said previously, New Zealand is not australia, and i think it is wrong to push the game in a country, that by and large, doesnt want to take to it.

BUT, if somehow the nz public was won over by a decent team then i would certainly be all for it :)

well I just want to distance football from other american sports, where their "franchises" can just pack up shop and leave a city!

here in the UK we prefer loyalties to local clubs. the "roots" of the club matter. (or does roots mean something else in Aussie? )

yeah the franchises (as far as i know) are bound to their city and location etc. but the difference is that if a club isn't performing in terms of publicity and crowd figures then the FFA (or A-league) have the right to revoke licences.

the reasons behind this is because all the clubs have to work together to build the sport over here, that and there is no promotion/relegation system to punish poorly competing teams. they wanted to avoid any situations of any 1 club dragging down the rest of them and at the moment (well for the last two seasons) the knights have been doing just that.

good news for everyone who wants New Zealand out of the A-League! An offer to leave the A-League!

FFA propose contingency plan for troubled Knights
5:20 PM December 14

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has offered New Zealand Knights chairman Anthony Lee an immediate exit from the A-League.

Lee recently advised the FFA that Knights owners wished to surrender their five-year licence to field a team in the A-League at the conclusion of the current season as they do not have the capacity to run the club.

The current offer by the FFA could see the last-placed Knights relinquish control of the club to the game's governing body for the remainder of the season after this Sunday afternoon's match against Melbourne Victory.

It'll be good cause New Zealand were just dreadful both on and off the field. I say put a 2nd melbourne team in or Victorian team in cause then I'll support them instead of Victory and I reckon teh whole South End/SDC crew would as well just to have some banter against the North.

Wrong. The FFA is taking control of the Knights and they will continue, just under new ownership.

The Kiwi's aren't going anywhere you prats!

Note: Not going anywhere for the remainder of the 2006 season. Couldn't give a fuck what happens to them after that to be honest. They are truly shit.

FFA plans contingency for New Zealand Knights
Thursday, 14 December 2006

Football Federation Australia (FFA) was recently advised by Anthony Lee, the New Zealand Knights Chairman, that the owners of the New Zealand Knights wished to surrender their 5-year licence to field a team in the Hyundai A-League at the conclusion of the 2006/07 season as they do not have the capacity to run the Club.

FFA considered this request, but in the interest of continuity and football, the FFA made Mr Lee an offer to relinquish the licence after this Sunday’s match (Sun 17 Dec).

The current offer by the FFA also includes the Australian governing body wearing a substantial debt owed to it by the club.

As yet there has been no formal response to the FFA offer from Mr Lee.

Therefore, FFA has needed to put in place contingency plans, with the support of New Zealand Soccer, to ensure that the players are looked after and they play their remaining matches.

FFA drive sword into Knights - Football Federation Australia

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has determined that Octagon Sports Limited, owners of the New Zealand Knights Football Club, had breached their Club Participation Agreement for the A-League and as a result have had their licence revoked.

The breach was due to an insolvency event as defined in the Club Participation Agreement.

The licence has now been returned to the FFA who have reached agreement with New Zealand Soccer to manage the football team's operations for the remainder of the 2006-07 A-League season.

This will ensure that the New Zealand Knights will play all their scheduled matches for the remainder of the season.

The FFA has been in contact with the Knights players and ensured them of their contracts until the end of the current season.

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert will assume the head coach position at the Knights immediately.

"The action that we had to take today is disappointing as the FFA has gone to great lengths since the commencement of the league to support Octagon Sports Limited who currently owe the FFA in excess of $AUS800,000," said FFA Head of Operations Matt Carroll.

"In this context, it is disappointing that Octagon Sports Limited should suggest today (Thursday) that their viability is dependant on a relatively small scheduled grant being withheld by the FFA as a result of Octagon Sports Limited's long-term, multiple, serious Participation Agreement breaches."

"The action that the FFA has taken is in the best interests of the Hyundai A-League, the team, the players and football in New Zealand."

Well I'm underage so I'm not in the pubbing/clubbing scene yet so can't advise you on that. But I'd advise seeing the real parts of our state.

Margaret River (for the wine/beaches)
Rottnest Island (don't think there is anywhere more relaxing)

See more @ www.westernaustralia.com (I pulled this off the telly during the cricket yesterday :))

EDIT: I don't really recommend coming to Perth for the city. There isn't much to see that isn't already in other cities. I could lie, but I'd rather not make you waste your money. Seriously go see our beaches, etc.

Things are maybe a little clearer now.

If by next season NZ has no new owners, and another club offers to take the license we will possibly have a new team in the league.

If nobody buys up the knights and nobody offers to take the license, for next year at least, we will have more of the knights, under FFA or NZS control. (though i can't imagine the FFA wanting to control 1/4 of teams in the league)

If knights find new buyers, things continue as normal.

How does that sound?
