Some might not be familiar with the name. This tourney use to be called the Tiger Cup but Tiger Beer has pulled out as the main sponsor so they changed the name.
The tournament was almost going to be moved to another host country after the bombings in Thai Lan during new years, but the Thai officials say that security will be beefed up so the AFC allowed the tournament to go on as planned.

ASEAN is the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. It is a regional trading block similar to NAFTA for North America or MERCUSOR for South America. It is different from the AFC or Asian Football Confederation, which is similar to UEFA, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, which are the regional football confederations. AFC includes all of Asia and the Middle East. ASEAN only includes the 10 members of that organization. Sport competitions are used within this organization/region to facilitate closer relationships among the members. And of course all football within this area is regulated by the AFC, then FIFA.

ASEAN wasn't originally set up as a trading block--it was a regional security organization, more akin to NATO than the EU, if that makes sense.
Just for the record, I hate the new name, cos there's already the SEA Games, which is for ASEAN nations. Shame about Tiger pulling out. I'll laugh my ass off if it becomes the EON Cup or the Petronas Cup.

I remember the 7-0 thumping Iran gave Laos. It was the game where Ali Daei crossed the 100 international goals mark. It was also a high quality cap so I remember that one.
I kept thinking, these guys from Laos (Laosans?) are all so short, how are they going to compete? They'd have to all be Maradonas. I just can't see Laos being a success anytime soon.

Malaysia are in a good spot right now. if they get a draw with the Thai's, they should be on there way to the second round. As for Viet Nam, we are going to have to fight for that second round birth. We had the win, but a questionable call pulled it back. We have had a good run against Indonesia lately and Laos should not be that be that big of a tough match. But you never know in football

We had the match but we let it slip away in extra time in the 2nd half. Man, we really needed the win. As of right now, no Vietnamese player has scored in the AFF Cup. Phan Thanh Binh had a disallowed goal in the Singapore match. Hopefully, Laos will help us out by holding Singapore later today.

i am very disappointed with the way Vietnam played in the first 2 matches. They just keep putting the long ball to the box when they do not have any player with good heading ability, or at least tall.

have you seen the matches? Viet Nam played well in the first 2 matches. Yeah they haven't scored but they have had great chances. The long ball situation, Viet Nam is playing with 3 of their 4 strikers injuried. Cong Vinh hurried back from a knee injury to help. Phuong Nam is our tallest guy but he's still struggling with an injury. You also have to remember that Viet Nam is in the toughest group of the Tourney. Malaysia and Thai Lan are clear winners in their group. Group b is the group where no one was sure who would be the 2 teams to advance.
Thanh Binh did score against Singapore but the damn ref called it back for a foul that even newswriters in Singapore said was not a foul. So sure there is a lack of goals but Viet Nam is not struggling. Our weakest part was Defense but Mr. Riedl has seemed to fixed that problem.

i did not see much of the creativity from the Vietnam's midfield. The good thing is that the defense has been very good.

yeah i hate that policy. it's ok if people come to Singapore, live here, are eligible, good enough for the team and then play.
But when we actively seek out good foreigners and bring them here for no reason other than they are good at sport, i don't like it. It's not just football though. Other sports are doing it too. There must be better ways to raise the sporting performance of a nation.
But i guess their philosophy would be, "if you can't beat them, join them". We are certainly not the first that do this. Even much more powerful nations are doing this.

For me Malaysia was the better team. Certainly in the first half. 2nd half was was more balanced.
You will have to see Malaysia's first goal, and i am waiting for the first Malaysian to tell me that Hardi meant it as a shot. For me, it was a typical Zamora/ Konchesky special.
Not a great deal of great chances. Kind of a boring game. Things got silly at the end when Aide decided to take a little nap on the pitch and the referee decided he was time-wasting and sent him off for a second bookable. So he will likely miss the return leg. Hope Subramani is back by then. Really missed his stability in defence.
Atmospehere at Shah Alam was fantastic. Mostly full apart from the seats behind the goals. Some big patches were visible. It's 80,000 i think at capacity. My guess would be in excess of 60,000 turned up.
Anyway, it is all set for the second leg.

Yeah only about a section of the stadium was filled but everytime your players got the ball, the fans were very loud.As for the game, very very poor first half.Crosses not met, intercepted passes, lazy players..but the 2nd half was far more interesting, danger at every corner. Now thats the game which is supposed to be "standard". Hardi's goal was unbelievable man..it dipped at the last few seconds..i think most keepers can't save that.Noh Alam Shah's goal was pretty simple...a cross met him and no defenders marked him..got his head to the ball, keeper couldn't save it.And also the ref had to sent off Aide Iskandar, our captain.I'm not sure what he did though to warrant it..Looking forward to the next leg!

great game i must say, worth my rm10...haha.... compare to previous home match (vs thai/myanmar) at bukit jalil, this one is much better from malaysia side..... midfield works well, & theres less long pass straight to hairuddin, .hahaha.... good overlapping but bad cross, i actually sit behind Hardi, & its look like a cross for me......hilang suara dah ni...:(

i am looking forward to the Vietnam v Thailand game. The last time i watched them play, they were coached by Peter Withe and they played some really fantastic football. Will be interesting to see how they have progressed.
Atmospehere at Shah Alam was fantastic. Mostly full apart from the seats behind the goals. Some big patches were visible. It's 80,000 i think at capacity. My guess would be in excess of 60,000 turned up.
Got that very wrong.:o reports say a crowd of 30,000. anyway reckon there will be a better turnout in the return leg.

think it's gonna be a good game between those 2....but on paper it shows that the thais have an advantage, even if they're playing in vietnam...

You know what's going to happen, right? If this team is true to Malaysian form, it'll just be another case of giving us something to be hopeful about, and then falling flat on their faces yet again. With that in mind, I'll regrettably have to say 3-0 Singapore in the 2nd leg. :( Hopefully, my cynical self will end up being proven wrong.

not a great deal in the game. Vietnam had a lot more of the ball, but seem to want too many touches in attacking areas. Thailand defended well. Scored their first goal from a fantastic free kick, which maybe the keeper should have saved.
Towards the end, Vietnam had a lot of the ball. Thailand did a lot of blatant time wasting. And while all this time wasting was going on, they actually managed to sucker punch Vietnam and got the second goal.
Thailand were not that much better than Vietnam. They defended better and were able to score. I guess they managed to get the result without playing too well at all. it will be a difficult second leg for vietnam now.

I watched the game. Vietnam dominated the game in term of possession, and that's about it. I did not see any creativity from the midfield. I think Vietnam need to have a player who can hold and pass the ball through.
I don't know why Duc Duong has always been the first option off the bench.
Do you know why the coach did not play Huu Thang at the beginning?

There were a lot of OTT tackles in the 2nd half from Vietnam but he key point was a weak penalty missed just before half time and a superb save from a freekick otherwise it would have been 2-1 at HT.
The Thai keeper was going down and wasted about 6 mins of playing time with only 4 added at the end. There were also other wasted time after Thai players took some heavy tackles.
The 2nd goal was bad defending and Vietnam had a good chance to level before that.

ok probably a match no one really cares about, but...
SINGAPORE : Singapore beat Thailand 2-1 on Wednesday but the first leg of the Asean football final was overshadowed by shambolic scenes when the Thai team walked off the pitch for 15 minutes.
In a fiery contest, a dubious penalty decision eight minutes from time sparked the walkout that showcased the worst of Southeast Asian football.
Noh Alam Shah was adjudged by Malaysian referee C. Ravichandran to have been pulled down by Thai centre-back Niweat Siriwong but the Thais were not ready to accept the decision.
After manhandling the referee the team stormed off the pitch and refused to return until Asean football officials persuaded them to get on with the match after holding it up for 15 minutes.
Mustafic Fahrudin calmly converted the spot kick to hand the defending champions their first victory over Thailand on home soil for almost 30 years and a psychological boost ahead of the return leg in Bangkok on Sunday.
