The 20th edition of the South American U-20 Championship will begin on January 7th in Paraguay. Colombia are the defending champions.

Group A
Bolivia
Brazil
Chile
Paraguay
Peru

Group B
Argentina
Colombia
Ecuador
Uruguay
Venezuela

Anybody as excited about this tournament as I am? As many of you know there are always tons of talented players in these kinds of Youth Championship. Top scorers in this competition have included players like Fernando Cavenaghi, Adriano, Romário and Enzo Francescoli.

Who are some players to look out for from your country? For Brasil unfortunately Marcelo and Anderson will not play for different reasons (R.Madrid didn't let Marcelo go and Anderson from Porto is injured) but that opens up space for other talented players. Players to look out for on the Seleção:

Carlinhos Left-Back (Santos), Lucas (Brasileirão player of the year according to PLACAR) Midfielder (Gremio), Thiago Heleno CB (Cruzeiro) and of course Alexandre Pato (Internacional) who most of you may know from the World Club Cup. There are also many others who have the talent to surprise like Danilinho (Patetico MG) and F.Oliveira (Flamengo).

Interested to hear about some younsters to look out for from your country...

The 20th edition of the South American U-20 Championship will begin on January 7th in Paraguay. Colombia are the defending champions.

They beat Brasil in the final.

Total Wins

* Brazil 1974 1983 1985 1988 1991 1992 1995 2001 - 8 titles (7 since 1977)
* Uruguay 1954 1958 1964 1975 1977 1979 1981 - 7 titles (3 since 1977)
* Argentina 1967 1997 1999 2003 - 4 titles (3 since 1977)
* Colombia 1987 2005 - 2 titles (2 since 1977)
* Paraguay 1971 - 1 title (none since 1977)

The reason the year 1977 is mentioned in parenthesis is because that was the year the age was raised from 19 to 20 years old.

My bad, anyway, seems Brazil or Argentina would be heavily favored.:)

Anyway, luckily ilovecolombia is not around anymore to heckle because that could have been an ugly. Thanks for being polite. Speaking of which, how could I have forgotten it was Colombia? He would repeat that over and over again. It was a big year for Colombian football, because Once Caldas won the Copa Libertadores either that year or the year before.

But I got my money this time around on Argentina. They seem to have young talent falling out of their ass*s nowadays.

Well Argentina has a lot of important absences. If they took their best team, we would be seeing Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Mauro Zarate, Gonzalo Higuain, Fernando Gago (?), and many others. Unfortunately, none of the previously mentioned players form part of the squad.

yeah you talk about a quintet of wonderkids missing from our team..don't think we'll win this..brazil can crush us
brazil's coach has had the opposite situation and has pretty much all of the local talent to choose from..looking forward to see more of pato (never thought that nickname would be associated with anything positive)
though if even 2-3 of those missing 5 (gago will be told by then won't he?) show up in canada this summer we may be able to defend the youthWC title
that said we do have some talented players on there right now..moralez has the 10
this is the among the purest competitive international football these days
no bullshit..these kids are usually no names in the way foreign players were before the 'information age' and really play their hearts out
as always, look for the number 10's and those subs who win a starting spot during the tournament

I don't know about "brazil can crush us".
Those are some big names missing for Argentina. There are of course many, many other players from Brasil that won't be able to participate either though besides the ones I mentioned(not comparing it to your loses), they are just not as known but are incredible talents at that age. Let's not forget that although Brasil can count on much of the local talent, in todays football players are leaving Brasil younger and younger everyday so a player like, Denilson from Arsenal, is another that won't be able to participate even though he's only 18. Kerlon is another. Ramon (the next Rivaldo as they call him) who won the U-17 South American Championship with Brasil in 2005 is another. Not sure why they couldn't be called up.

I hope everyone is available for the World Championship.

Well, next week starts the qualifier tournament for the WC. There is no Aguero, Messi nor Mauro Zarate. But that doesn't mean that if Argentina makes it to the WC, they wouldn't go.

For the Sudamerican U-20, qualifier to the WC, the top 4 teams go to the WC AND the top 2 go to the Olympic Games 2008. This is Argentina's list for the Sudamericano:

Sergio Germán Romero (Racing), Federico Julián Fazio (Ferro), Emiliano Adrián Insúa (Boca), Miguel Ángel Torren (Newell's Old Boys), Claudio Ariel Yacob (Racing), Matías Cahais (Boca) , Matías Ariel Sánchez (Racing), Ever Maximiliano David Banega (Boca), Gonzalo Abán (Argentinos Juniors), Maximiliano Nicolás Moralez (Racing), Pablo Nicolás Mouche (Boca), Bruno Emiliano Centeno (San Lorenzo), Gonzalo Sebastián García (Racing), Gabriel Iván Mercado (Racing), Leonardo Morales (Estudiantes de La Plata), Franco Matías Di Santo (Audax - Chile), Alejandro Darío Gómez (Arsenal), Víctor Ismael Sosa (Independiente), Ángel Fabián Di Maria (Rosario Central) & Lautaro Germán Acosta (Lanús).

It is not clear the starting line-up ... as only 2 weeks ago did Tocalli (the coach) discover that the 2 Velez stars (Zarate and Escudero) wouldn't be given to the YNT.

Still, there are some very talented youngsters. From the ones I know: Cahais (capt.) , Acosta, Banega, Morales, Sosa, Di Maria. Di Santo is very young (17?), and super tall (Crouchy style) ... will be interesting to see him play.

very much looking forward to watching the team's that i'll be seeing live this summer in Canada. :) As it is, i'm interested to see Di Santo, because Argentina hasnt been known for its tall forwards, and I'm also interested in seeing Columbia play of all teams, because they gave Argentina the biggest scare in 2005WYC. They played really well, and worked hard. Had it not been for one Leonel Messi, we would have lost.

Recommend the Brasil x Chile game today. Great stuff. And Chile has a gem, I think his name is Alexi Sanchez. One of those players you can just tell is special although he holds the ball too much and tries way too many individual plays. He's still young though and can improve that easily with time. Skillwise he's clearly a special player.

They call him "Maravilla" (Marvelous) Sanchez. He is 17, plays at Colo Colo but was already bought by Udinese and lend to Colo Colo. He played at a very high level this past semester, winning the Chilean tournament and being finalist of the Sudamericana.

Along Matias Fernandez and Suazo is the future of the Chilean NT.

In Brazil, really liked Leandro Lima (7) and William (10), even though William "disappears" for passages of the game. He has things of Anderson (Porto). And well, Alexandre Pato (11) is outstanding for his age. Impressive height in some of Brazil's players ... every set piece was 1/2 a goal. The defense was shaky thou, should get better with the games.

Thanks for the info.

Yeah Brasil's defense looked horrific. The players on the field are very offensive. As you can see Leandro Lima is very offensive and Lucas isn't a true defensive midfielder but more of a terceiro volante as we call it. And the two backs (both from Cruzeiro :o) had a terrible game. I can assure you they're better than that though. Thiago Heleno has already started many games for Cruzeiro in the 1st division. I really hope this first game was just a matter of nerves for them. Since they made this competition a Olympic qualifier Brasil is under incredible pressure. The Olympics, for Brasil, is even more important than the Youth World Cup as crazy as that may sound.

Imagine if they were to make it out of the group, and eventually qualify to the U-20 World Cup :eek:.. It would be an embarrassment to have them represent South America internationally.

Anyway, I'm glad to see Argentina win, especially in the way they did tonight. Great game for several players, and what a goal by Mouche (his 3rd one, although the 1st one was nice too). Too bad he's a Boca player. Hopefully he does great throughout this tournament, and then becomes one of those forgotten players.. :D

whats this all about

Three Brazilian players were banned on Monday after their team attacked the referee following a stormy 2-2 draw with Chile in the South American under-20 championship.

Referee Albert Duarte of Colombia needed a police escort off the field after Sunday's game which produced five red cards, two of them after the final whistle.

At one stage, Duarte fell to the ground holding his red card after being pushed by a Brazilian player following his decision to award Chile two penalties in the closing minutes of the game.

The South American Football Confederation (CSF) said on its Web site (www.crwflags.com) that midfielder Fernando was suspended for the rest of the tournament in which Brazil have three matches left to play.

Defender Thiago Heleno and left back Carlinhos, sent off in the melee after the final whistle, were each given two-match bans.

The CSF also said it had decided to move Thursday's matches from Luque, venue for Sunday's game, due to Asuncion for security reasons after fans hurled bottles onto the field.

Chile had Nicolas Larrondo sent off for a late tackle in the 58th minute while Hans Martinez of Chile and Luiz Adriano of Brazil were dismissed for fighting in the 74th.

The tournament is a qualifier for both the World under-20 championships to be held this year in Canada and next year's Olympic Games in China.

whats this all about
To put it mindly, the referee is a thief.

First off let me say that Brasil sucked and I think Chile was the better team. Chile deserved the 3 points, there's no argument about that, but they couldn't make the best of their chances.

Anyway, the problem was mainly because the Colombian referee awarded Chile two illegitimate penalties.

The first one was given 15 minutes after Brasil scored their first goal. It was a foul but it was outside of the box.

The second one was 8 minutes after Brasil scored their second goal and in the 5th minute of the added time he had given (50 minutes of the second have to be exact). It was called because the brazilian defender lifted his foot too high going after the ball. Two problems with that: #1 It was a really ticky tacky foul and you almost never see those called in the box, let alone in the dying seconds of a game. #2 A high kick like that is a dangerous play - which means that it should have been an indirect kick, not a penalty. Right after Chile's 2nd penalty (which tied the game at 2-2) the Ref ended the match. After that is when all the troubles started.

Also a telling statement was made by Albert Luque (the doctor in charge of looking after the referee in the event of an injury) who claimed in a complaint filed by the CBF that the Colombian Referee said to a member of the Conmebol at one point, " Brazil is strong, we have to be careful" :confused:. Whether that's true or not I don't know, but the ref definitely made strange calls.

For the record, I checked and he won't be reffing any games in the next round. Don't know if any further punishment will be made though.

west501
23-01-2007, 03:54 AM
I tuned into the match just as the second penalty was called and I have to say that (judging solely on that play) they were robbed
clumsy defending to be sure, but the defender didn't see the chilean and the chilean practically ran into his leg
with a penalty kick the ref has the right and the responsibility to properly judge intention
was it a foul? yes, anywhere on the pitch
was it intentional? I don't think so
harsh call cos it could have been whistled for an indirect

dunno about the rest of the match, but the brazilians couldn't have only been reacting to that one tough call
then I learned there had been another penalty and accusations of bias and things fell into place

Ohh, brazilian fan coming through, coming through :P
I gotta say, I was a bit nervous after those first 2 games in the second round, specially the one against Chile, where the ref robbed us blind. I thought we would be out of the Olympics for the second time in a row.
But thankfully, the boys picked it up, we had some lucky results (lots of ties), and now we're in a good place.
Let's go Brazil against Colombia tomorrow, on the road to Beijing!

unbelievable, see you in canada AND china
the latter was completely undeserved..and if you didn't see the game, don't!
in argentina there's an expression 'que culo' which doesn't translate well at all :rolleyes: , it essentially means 'what extreme luck' ;)
but it serves uruguay right for playing for the tie..even if they deserved the win
if colombia, who are currently playing brazil (in their second 'faux france' uniforms) can pull off a win, argentina win the tournament :o
that much luck is impossible, but vamos pino, vamos colombia :cool:

Haha, yeah, I was watching the Argentina-Uruguay game and I was amazed by those last seconds. Uruguay gambled way too much for that tie, and it bit their asses on the end.

Brazil played enough for the win against Colombia, 2-0. I don't think the championship is that great of a deal, but I'm glad we're going to the Olympics. After that whole fiasco last time, it's the least we could do.

See you argies in Canada? ;)
