Must be too many complications involving a straight transfer, loaned until summer then complete then transfer if he turns out well :)

Rangers have signed Andy Webster on loan from Wigan Athletic until the end of the season.

Former Hearts defender Webster, 24, has made just four starts and one substitute appearance since signing for the Premiership side in September.

However, the Scotland international will not be eligible to make his debut against Dunfermline Athletic in Sunday's third-round Scottish Cup tie.

"I can't wait to play for 50,000 fans at Ibrox," he told the club website.

The Scot, who invoked the help of Fifa to leave Hearts following disagreements, added: "I am delighted to return to Scotland with Rangers.

"I have agreed to join on loan until the end of the season, and hopefully I can extend my stay beyond that."

Ian Durrant, who is in temporary charge of first team affairs at Ibrox, said: "Andy will be a great acquisition for the club."

Wigan boss Paul Jewell reluctantly allowed Webster to move north.

"Webby's a good pro, and he's a good defender who has never given me less than a 100%, in training, or on the field of play," he said.

"What he needs is first team games and hopefully he will get those at Ibrox, which is a great move for him.

"We will review the situation in the summer, but he goes to Scotland with the good wishes of everyone at Wigan Athletic, because he's a lovely lad who has given his all to us while he's been here."

Awe, I was hoping "Webster" meant I would see a photo Emmanuel Lewis in a Rangers kit :D

a good move to sure up the defence a bit, better than a 33 yr old Elvis me thinks.

if Webster turns out good, he can be signed long term :)

but tbh, I know the lure of the Premiership is very strong, but playing for a club like Wigan, or playing for Rangers, I know who I'd pick ;)

Yes Yes ,Yes , can i say yes Again ? Great signing by the Teddy bears , saddened to see its only for the end of the season.

Good enough tho to secure 2nd place at least, i do hope he's still got that cool looking mullet.:)

Its all true about that story Nelly , Webster never unhitched his Caravan in Wigan I'm sure he will in Govan tho.

Nice loan. I hope he stays and it drives mad vlad up the wall. You can almost guarantee he'll be going nuts to the SFA at the first opportunity.

aye whit yi smokin min, rangers couldnae afford a straight oot purchase, probably winaet peruse interest if they nae get champions league qualification, cud rangers really financially handle anither year weeout champions league fitba? ada ken lyke... although like seany said (aff a forums) wigan'll probably let him go for cheap, although i hope this isnt the case and hope he gets dragged back their for next season,

pmsl 4 every 5iver my arse!!! (LOAN DEALS DO NOT CONSTITUTE TRANSFER FEES, well not down payment.. in this case anyway.. most likely) 18 points clear pmsl:)

Out for 4 weeks damn unlucky, hope the scan goes well. I had one of these when I was playing for Morton Boys. 4 bigs needles of puss they took out my knee missed the trip to butlins for a national tournament. Absolutely gutted

But the 24-year-old is believed to have suffered medial ligament damage during training on Saturday.

And, as the rest of the squad face Dunfermline on Sunday, he will undergo a scan to assess the full damage.
