should be one of many mouth-watering friendlies this week :)
Admittedly, Australia will be more keen (than Denmark) to get a good result this Tuesday. After all, Socceroo boss Graham Arnold's job is under threat following the federation's announcement to find a more seasoned manager to lead them in the Asian Cup later this year. Jurgen Klinsmann is the latest candidate.
However, Arnold will be without several key players for the clash at Loftus Rd, London. Lucas Neill (West Ham), Craig Moore (Newcastle), Luke Wilkshire (Twente), Michael Beauchamp (Nurnberg) & keeper Mark Schwarzer (Middlesbrough) – the entire Australia backline are out through injury. Central midfielders Jason Culina (PSV) & Mark Bresciano (Palermo) will also miss the match as their wives are expected to give birth this week. Finally, skipper Mark Viduka is a serious doubt after suffering a strain in the 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Saturday. I don't see him playing the full 90 (if any at all) as he had just returned from a 2-week hamstring layoff.
This means that there will be a number of new faces on Tuesday. Jacob Burns (Wisla Krakow), Jon McKain (FCU Politechnica Timisoara), Shane Stefanutto (Lillestrom), Brad Jones (Middlesbrough), Michael Petkovic (Perth Glory), Neil Kilkenny (Birmingham), Nick Ward (Brighton) & James Wesolowski (Leicester) have been drafted into the squad.
With this fixture held in London, Denmark will have a full strength squad as they prepare for a crucial Euro2008 qualifier with Spain next month. Regulars like Thomas Sorensen (Aston Villa), Daniel Agger (Liverpool), Per Kroeldrup (Fiorentina), Claus Jensen (Fulham), Christian Poulsen (Sevilla), Daniel Jensen (Werder Bremen), Dennis Rommedahl (Charlton), Jon Dahl Tomasson (Villarreal) & Martin Jorgensen (Fiorentina) will be available for selection. This is in stark contrast to the Danish squad – comprising of Scandinavian-based players – that recently finished touring America in January. Nevertheless, the month-long tour will work to Denmark's advantage since Australia's last get-together was back in mid-November.
FOX SPORTS (http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,,21134225-23215,00.html?from=public_rss) will start its broadcast deal with Football Federation Australia by featuring injured star Harry Kewell in its commentary team for the Australia friendly against Denmark in London on February 7.
The Liverpool midfield player will join regular FOX SPORTS commentator Simon Hill for its first broadcast of a Socceroos match under the new seven-year partnership...
Tony Sinclair, Director, Fox Sports Channels, described Kewell’s role as an indication of FOX SPORTS' plan to unite the sport and take the fans closer to the true heroes, the players.
The Australia v Denmark clash will be screened on FOX SPORTS 3 on Wednesday February 7 from 6.30am.*ouch*... a slap in the face for SBS?!
more like distance the fans from the sport & players .
I jus hope Harry doesn't find a way to injure his throat or something...
... squad updates to follow...
Come on Bruun - let's see what U Danes got :D
