Boca Juniors president Mauricio Macri has announced that the Argentine club have agreed a deal with Villarreal to take Juan Roman Riquelme on loan for the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old has suffered a dramatic fall from grace at Villarreal having seemingly lost the confidence of coach Manuel Pellegrini.

The Argentine schemer had been seen as the club's talisman and helped guide them to the semi-finals of last season's UEFA Champions League where he was widely regarded as one of the tournament's outstanding performers.

However, having returned from the World Cup, he endured a slow start to this season as both he and Villarreal struggled for form.

A 4-1 home defeat against Osasuna on 17th December proved to be the final straw for Pellegrini who has subsequently omitted Riquelme from all match-day squads since, leaving the player kicking his heels in the stands.

Villarreal president Fernando Roig has expressed his unhappiness at the player's attitude and it was expected that the South American would move on in the January transfer window.

Boca made clear their interest in re-signing a player who made his name with them, but neither club could agree on the permanent deal Riquelme desired.

In the end the move did not materialise, but the player has now relented and agreed to accept a six-month loan deal to return to his native Argentina, as confirmed by Macri.

"I am happy because we have finalised the return of Riquelme to the club," the Boca supremo stated.

Riquelme won six Argentine championship titles during his first spell with the Buenos Aires-based club before moving to Barcelona in the summer of 2002.

Will we be seeing Riquelme play for Boca tonight? :)

edit: no we won't... lol... Boca played last night.

Riquelme will play next week... looking forward to it.

He trained with the entire squad for the first time yesterday ... he has just been confirmed in the 1st team by coach Russo for the game against Central this Sunday.

At a salary rate of US$ 15,000 per day, you bet we will be seeing a lot of him this semester. :D

He came for US$ 2'000,000 until June 30th ... but the 2 tournaments that Boca is playing end around mid June.

Between 125 and 140 days ... 14,000 to 16,000 US$ a day.

The whole team was mediocre today against Rosario Central at home. I thought Riquelme didn't do badly considering he hasn't played a match in 2 months. But his lack of match fitness was very evident, he was even slower than usual and didn't move around enough. He will get better in the next couple of weeks I think.

It was awesome to hear La Bombonera in the beginning of the game though when he walked out...first a big cheer and then you can see all the posters "Gracias Roman para volver a Boca", and then "Riqueeeelmee....Riqueeeeelmee". And then the first time he touched the ball the whole stadium went "OLE!" and then the second time he touched it, again "OLE!" and then he was fouled and then all the cheering and whistling. What a sight and sound. :D

I only saw the last 25 mins and he hardly touched the ball much during that time. He will be back in full swing by a couple weeks time. I didn't remember the match was on in fact, so when i switched to FSC i cracked a blush and a smile when realizing he was on the field.....god i love to see him play.

Yeah eventually he pretty much ran out of energy because of his lack of match fitness, so the Rosarinos were able to mark him out of the game towards the end. The only problem is physical...I think that goes for the entire team. Give it a couple of weeks and Boca should be back to top form after they've gotten back into the rhythm of matches every week.

Independiente took the lead in the 22nd minute through Emiliano Armenteros before star Boca midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme, on-loan from Spanish outfit Villarreal, took control of the game and set-up Neri Cardozo and Rodrigo Palacio to score twice in a minute just before half-time.

que bueno

All it needed was patience. He played a good game yesterday. Still not his best, nowhere near, but he did provide two awesome assists and played pretty well.

Mariano Closs interviewed Riquelme in his show "Un Buen Momento" on La Red, yesterday. It was 30 minutes in which he talked about Boca, Spain, the NT and football in general.
