ARACAS, Venezuela -- The United States will play Argentina, Paraguay and Colombia in the first round of this summer's Copa America, soccer's championship of South America.
The Americans, invited as a guest, are in Group C and open June 28 against Argentina in Maracaibo. The United States plays Paraguay on July 2 in Barinas and Colombia on July 5 in Barquisimeto, according to Wednesday's draw.

"Quite obviously we have been put in a very competitive group," U.S. interim coach Bob Bradley said during a telephone conference call.

The U.S. opener comes just four days after the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean, which will be played in Chicago. The U.S. team figures to make several roster changes between tournaments.

"The Gold Cup still is the most important event for us," Bradley said. "Obviously, it's our confederation championship. But the main reason that I think it's extra important is because winning the Gold Cup will earn us three games -- three very, very good games --in South Africa in 2009."

The Gold Cup champion advances to the eight-nation FIFA Confederations Cup, which will be played a year ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The United States, trying to rebound from its first-round elimination in last year's World Cup, is appearing in the Copa America for the first time since 1995, when it beat Argentina 3-0 in its final first-round game and finished fourth in the tournament.

Bradley is not sure he will even be around to coach the team. He was hired on an interim basis after former Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann withdrew and has led the Americans to exhibition victories over Denmark and Mexico.

He was happy to open against what appears to be the toughest team in the group.

"Oftentimes when you can play that team first, it gives you the ability to really prepare well for the first game," he said.

Defending champion Brazil is in Group B of the 12-nation tournament along with Chile, Ecuador and Mexico. Host Venezuela was drawn into Group A with Bolivia, Peru and Uruguay. The top two teams in each group and the best two third-place teams advance to the quarterfinals.

Venezuela plays on the opening day against Bolivia on June 26 at Merida. The tournament will be played in nine cities, with the final July 15 in Maracaibo.

Because of the two tournaments, some players will be missing from Major League Soccer for extended periods.

"I know that there's always been discussions, and we will work together, as we always do," Bradley said. "Everybody understands that both events are important for U.S. Soccer."

Very much looking forward to watching this tourney. :) I'm happy with the draw for the Argies. Brasil has a harder group, we are in the middle, with group A being the weakest(imo). Not so sure if we'll win it, but i believe we have as good a chance as any.

Group A Is Too Easy While Group C Seems To Be The Group Of Death

I Think Venezuela And Uruguay Will Dominate Group A But The Other Two Groups Are Too Hard To Really Pick A Favorite Altough Ecuador Will Most Likely Lost All Threee Matches In Group B

Mexico vs Brazil, this is going to be good. I still think Mexico is not good enough to be considered Brazil's rival. Its still very interesting though.

Group C, its really hard seeing USA make it through.

2 groups have 3 WC teams ... the other group has ... the local team.

First 2 of each group go thru, plus the best 2 3rds.

C'mon now, it's obvious Group B is the group of death. 3 out of the 4 teams made it to the Round of 16 in the World Cup. Only one other team in the other two groups combined made it at least that far.

Wonder what kind of team Brasil will call up. In any case, can't wait for the tournament! And I love US vs ARG - BRA vs MEX 1st matches lol. Little swapping of rivals there.

Bob Bradley announced that the US will be sending a "B" team to the Copa America. He prefers to put his emphasis on the CONCACAF Gold Cup which ends on June 24. The Copa America begins in June 28. It seems that all of our European-based players will not take part.

Just as well I guess, because it is doubtful we would make it through Group C with our "A" team. Perhaps if we drew into Group A it would be a different story. But having to play through Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay under what will be extremely hostile conditions, we might just be set up for failure here. I guess it is a better move to down play it and not try at all than potentially get embarassed.

We have traditionally had a lot of difficulty playing away in our region. We have only managed two draws since 1980 at Costa Rica for example. And the last time we managed a point there was 1992. Then of course there is our record at Azteca and our single point in a goalless draw in 1997.

With all that said though, our past experience in the Copa America was actually extremely positive. We participated in 1995 tournament hosted by Uruguay and won our group, beating Chile (2-1) and Argentina (3-0) and losing to Bolivia (0-1). We went on to beat Mexico (0-0:4-2pens) in the quarters and were then knocked out in the semifinal by Brazil (0-1). And then we went on to lose to Colombia in the 3rd place match. Not a bad tournament at all. So we have had success. But this time around it feels a bit different.

I don't understand the logic of bringing our "B Team". If we want to improve our "A Team" for the next World Cup, it's better to throw them in deep water and let them learn how to swim in a hostile environment. It will only make them better. Beating up on crappy CONCACAF opponents in Gold Cup isn't going to make the first team better.

Who cares if we are a failure in Copa America? I would rather get embarrassed now than in 2010.

i don't think our team will have that bad of a "b" team but we will see. I think of course some of our big MLS names wont be there, but there will be multiple European based players, and some obscure unsung hero type players from the MLS.

Either way B team or not i cant wait until this summer. With the Gold Cup and Copa America, and don't forget the u-20 world cup i think USA can make another big splash...fingers crossed.
