View Full Version : Why Is Italian Football So Boring?

Seriously, why would you all want to watch such a boring game?
Slow paced, teams too scared to try and score, EMPTY SEATS EVERYWHERE, diving, and cheating everywhere.
No wonder why so many Americans have such a negative view of soccer. Probably saw a Serie A game and fell asleep.
Perfect example: Lazio vs Sampdoria
There was more attacking football in the first 10 minutes of the Watford-Charlton game than the whole 90 minutes of the Lazio-Sampdoria
Attendence levels are their worst since 1970- an average of just 19,511 after seven games. That's barely half the Premiership average of 34,084 so far this season, and only marginally better than the Championship's 17,368.
Perhaps you all can enlighten me on this?
Perhaps drugs liven the Serie A?

first question you should ask yourself before claiming serie A as being a "boring" league of football: how long have you been following the league? last couple of weeks? :p

I guess it's a matter of taste. I love serie A and always has because of the passion, the game (yes I love tactics) and everything calcio represents. This year hasn't been on top (becuase of the scandals) but everything in life has its ups and downs.
I hope you watched Serie A during the early 90s, daaaem it was so good back them!
This year has been relatively poor, for several reasons, but I still enjoy this type of football, tactics especially, over EPL, which I simply can't stand.
No wonder why so many Americans have such a negative view of soccer. Probably saw a Serie A game and fell asleep.
Do you try being ignorant, or does it simply come natural to you?
Diff'rent strokes for different folks, pal.

Well, i'm English and the Premier League bores the shit out of me! I'd much rather watch Serie A, even though my favourite team Juve aren't in it this season.

I don't think it's boring at all, it's the most skillful league with some of the best players in the world playing in it. Who could say the last Milan derby was boring? Also Juve vs Milan is always good, or Roma vs Lazio, Sicilian derbies; none of these games are ever boring.

it is a bit slower paced but that doesnt mean that it is boring. you probably just caught a bad match. i watched ronaldo's first game for AC and it was probably the best match i have seen this season. and even in la liga and the EPL, you get more than your fair share of crap games during the season.

I've been watching a few games on and off the past few months; whatever FSC throws at me, lol. I keep trying to get myself to like it because I hear its such a good league (many say it's the #1 in the world), but just doesnt click.
the game (yes I love tactics)
touche' It's very much like a chess game
Though one can argue that playing in the EPL would have to think faster and be more on their feet due to it's quicker pace.

That's why you have "West Ham, Barcelona" as your fav clubs in your profiles

i think Fac1 has pointed out that this year has been a real mess for serie A. try a couple years back. or even further back. i've been following serie A since 1999 when i still didnt have my fav team. i already hated inter at that time for no reason and still hate them for no real reason. i just do. :D

Why because it's not boring enough for you?
I guess you must also enjoy watching wallpaper dry. :)
I have the right to my opinions and to voice such opinions. :o
Count the number of goals scored in Serie A compared to the goals scored in the other major leagues and then come back and tell us Serie A is boring and teams are too afraid to attack(this must be a joke, right:rolleyes: ).
Do you remember all the goalless draws and wins by 1 goal in the EPL last year?
I guess you forgot Siena - Milan 3-4.Another boring game in Serie A:rolleyes:

Doesn't matter about # of goals scored, i'm talking about fun to watch.
But I guess Serie A is perhaps more the thinking man's game.
Why because it's not boring enough for you?
Probably because you're basing your knowledge of the league on "a few games on and off." Watch the Milan derby on Sunday, its first leg was the best match I've seen, in any league, since the 90s.
But I guess Serie A is perhaps more the thinking man's game.
Ok, i'll take that;)
There's not one size that fits all.Whatever rocks anyone's boat, be it Serie A, EPL, La Liga or any other league in the world:)

I'd agree with that. Like others in the thread, I like the tactical aspect of Italian football. I also enjoy the more fast-paced action in the Premiership, but, for me, nothing can beat good tactical buildup culminating in a great goal.

You probably just need to watch more games. Despite the fact you don't appreciate this style of football, it isn't always the same and believe me it can be very entertaining. Besides, there are tons of boring games in every league, including the EPL, and Serie A is no different, but there are also tons of great games and teams that play beautiful football. Who can deny that Roma is one of the best passing sides in Europe or that Palermo is one of the best and quickest counter-attacking teams in the world when they're firing on all cylinders? I just wish you were watching Serie A in the 90s...what a league it was.

Serie A is amazing and home to some of the most talented players in the world, when Italy won the World Cup every player played there trade in Serie A. Serie A is amazing, and i love it. Watch it over any league any day tbh :D

I've been watching a few games on and off the past few months; whatever FSC throws at me,
FSC has the TV rights to 4 of the crappiest clubs in Serie A and what they air is not at all representative of the league in general. Judging a whole league based on the play of the relegation bound clubs is downright comical and casts a serous doubt on anything you have to say.
Given the level of ignorance you routinely display it's not surprising that you couldn't be bothered to actually watch some of the good clubs, derbies or rivalries before arriving at your "conclusion".

I find it ridiculous how anyone can label a whole league as being "boring"
It doesn't make any sense. Yeah, individual games can be "boring" but to label a whole league as "boring"? How can you possibly come up with this idea?
It's not as if every team in Serie A plays the same way. Roma are perhaps playing the best football in Europe, Palermo at the start of the season were playing with beatiful counter-attacking football with Corini spreading the ball about like fun - Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio also are all playing very attacking football, scoring plenty of goals. Catania for example went a man down against Roma, yet they didn't try and defend instead they stuck to an attacking philosophy.
I understand that the Italian style of play generally is a little slower in tempo than some of the rest of the leagues but for me this is how football is meant to be played. This is the sort of football Argentina played to much acclaim in the world cup, this is the sort of football that seen Milan destroy Barcelona 4-0 and saw Milan destroy Liverpool 3-0 in 45 mins.
And you can also mention the fact that there's always (bar this season ;)) a competitive league. Over the last 5 years, the title hasn't been decided until the last game of the season on 3 occasions. There's always an exciting race for the 4th CL spot and the relegation battle is always tense and exciting.
Of course, there's been a lot of problems recently regarding Italian football but that doesn't take away from the quality of the league. It's still a very high quality league and next season it will regain it's spot as the best league in the world because next season we may see the return of Italian giants like Juve, Genoa and Napoli ;)
In the end it's all down to personal preference. I find the Italian approach to the game the most fascinating and the most enthralling, the most dramatic and the most beautiful, the most artistic and the smartest. I find La Liga to rely to much on individual brilliance, whilst EPL is too fast and furios and isn't beatiful on the eye at all but I'd never call either of those leagues boring, they always fascinate me and I watch both regularly - they sometimes provide great games and great drama but never at the same level as Serie A;)
Anyway if you find Serie A boring, perhaps you should try and watch Milan - Roma, Milan - Inter and Fiorentina - Palermo from earlier on in the season. Probably the 3 best games I've seen this season :)

Football is a great game and now when almost all games are televised I am watching many games in a week.I don`t have time to watch them all so I watch less and less of Serie A. I don`t find it as entertaining as La Liga, EPL and French League. 5-6 seasons ago I loved to watch Serie A games, but I think the league has declined since then.Slow pace, diving, too many freekicks and very tactical.( I do enjoy the tactics part of the game though). Even if the game is good I find myself loosing interest after half the game.So at the moment I just watch the Palermo games and the top games.
I think all the cheating and violence have made me get tired of the Italian game as well.
La Liga is what I like most at the moment.I have seen some fantastic games this season.I also like the fast speed of english football even if the football is crap at times.
I will give Serie a chance again next season when Napoli is back up.

the glory days of Serie A in the 90s, when Channel 4 in the UK showed it, every Sunday afteroon, it really was quite the best, but now, it has gone down hill a bit... (Football Italia, Channel 4 -> Eurosport -> Bravo -> and now canned, smaller & smaller audience in the UK...)
hope it'll get better tho', more quality football for football fans to watch, it can only be a good thing.

Supposely, a lot of people like the slow pace and defensive style of Serie A.That isn't the case for all Serie A matches.I don't think it is good to generalize. You do have a few really exciting and interesting Serie A matches, but the norm in Serie A does seem to be more defense oriented and slow paced compared to the action in the EPL or La Liga.

I don't think you can ever take the moral high ground when it comes to diving. Nearly every nationality, every league and every club has a diver amongst them. The only reason some nationalities, clubs and players have a worse reputation for it, is because you're always looking out for a dive so everytime a player hits a floor it's automatically assumed it's a dive. Often it's because of the way they fall and maybe stay down longer.
I don't think you can factually state that one league is worse than another for diving. You may have experienced more dives in one league than the other because of certain games you've watched but I don't see how you can justify dismissing a whole league for a couple of players who dive. I really don't think there's as big a problem with divers in Serie A as some people would like to think, there's obviously certain players who are pretty notorious for it - Gilardino ;)
If you are suggesting that there are no divers in La Liga, may I point out to you the following players - Jose Mari, Savio, Ronaldinho, Guti for example ;)
gmyrek
08-03-2007, 06:45 PM
I never said that Serie A has more divers. The word diving was taken out of context.I would never stop watching a League because of some diving. All Leagues has divers.Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the "best".Deco, Guti and Robben are also great divers.
I am looking forward to Inter - Milan on Sunday.

That's something else Beckham will bring to the US. I'm sure he's learned a few tricks in La Liga ;) :p.
A lot of people in this thread are saying that this year has been a very poor season I will agree to a certain extent mainly because Juve are missing and all the point deductions. However I will say that the way Roma, Atalanta, Catania and Palermo have been playing has made the league somewhat interesting. If they stay contenders, next year when Juve are back and battling to get to the top we may see some great matches. I also predict some BIG summer moves in Serie A so were in for a great 2007-2008 season.
If Serie A is so great then why has their fan attendance been plummeting for years? Why do so many Serie A supporters in this thread feel the need to bring up the '90s? That just proves the point if you say, "Well it was great ten years ago!" Good for ten years ago, what about now?
Sorry, Serie A has fallen far behind EPL and La Liga, and, imo, it is behind the Bundesliga as well. No matter what crappy obscure clubs are playing, every Bundesliga game I have turned on this season has been great! So far I haven't been able to find a Serie A game this season that I could watch for more than ten minutes, although I'm sure there have been a few scorchers that I missed out on. If you have to say - "Oh, well you should have seen this ONE game," then that proves the point that the league overall is pretty boring when compared to other top leagues. It should be better next season, but there's one thing that has to be said --
If your game is played in a culture of corruption, then the quality of the non-corrupt aspect of the game will gradually deteriorate. If honest hard working players and teams are not fairly rewarded for their efforts, then those efforts are going to gradually dry up. In the wake of the big corruption scandal last year, it seemed like Serie A was going to get cleaned up, but then, at the end of the day all the punishments were cut by 50% or more and it is an open quesiton whether any underlying problems were resolved....
This year has been the league's all-time low-point in its entire history. It's not fair to compare it to the rest of Europe when two of its most successful clubs are in Serie B. Anyways, the league can only go up from here, and with clubs like Napoli and Genoa ready to make it back, along with the resurgence of Palermo, Lazio, and Fiorentina, the league will be back to the top in a few years.
The attendance issue is mainly due to the Calciopoli. Just 2 years ago the average attendance was at ~27k per game. Safety is another factor that has caused the decline.
R9magia

^^And to add to that just a few weeks ago there was, what I think could be, one of the games of the season in any league between Milan and Siena. Certainly rivaled the West Ham - Tottenham match as far as drama. Again, even this season with Serie A at it's all-time low like Fac mentioned, there have been a number of great games. Next year it will only get better.
Fair points. Italy still provides some of the greatest rivalries from anywhere in the world, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Serie A eventually get back to the top of the dogpile.
What do you mean by Calciopoli?

Following that logic the present english league must be shit and boring compared to the leagues of the 1970, which would have been shit compared to the league of the 1960's. Since fan attendance in the english league has dwindled through the decades from over 100,000 being packed in stadiums like wembley to now 20-30,000 for most teams bar the top 4 or so.
Are you so blind that you cant see that their might be other reason why attendance falls. italian people are more money savers, and don't like to have their money ripped of by them , by the clubs with extortionate ticket prices, same in spain (proof of that is most italian men live with their parents till they are in their 30's). So when prices went up fan attendance went down, just as it did in the english leagues. In spain they really have'nt bothered to increase the prices as much, hence the above average attendance, and heck in germany they have actually cut the prices which has caused more fans to attend. It is now the most attended league in europe.
Sorry, Serie A has fallen far behind EPL and La Liga, and, imo, it is behind the Bundesliga as well. No matter what crappy obscure clubs are playing, every Bundesliga game I have turned on this season has been great! that is cause you have no attachesments, nothign riding on the matches. When you have an attachement to a club or to a league, then that attachement makes the matches more exciting. Frankly some of the best games are so boring to the neautral fan, becuase he doesn't give two hoots who wins or loses, all he wants to see is either pretty tricks like in la liga, or physical emotion as in bundesliga.
So with seria a which lacks the fancy flicks compared to la liga, and the physical style of play compared to the bundesliga, and EPL, then obviously to someon like you who does not appreciate the other aspects of football will not enjoy the matches, especially when you don't support a team or the league at all.
Frankly scandal is hiding in every league, the bung stuff in england, the liverpool goalkeeper cheating of the 90's, german betting scandals just a few months back etc. The only difference is becuase italy is so passionate about football and becuase seria a was the biggest and best league in the world for over a decade (all of the 90's) the media spot light on them and the scrutiny is higher. The italians are also very shit at covering up their scandals, unlike in britain and germany. Compared to the seria a scandal and thee bung scandal or britain, i'd say the bung scandal is worse. It just wasn't as sensationalised or handled that well.
P.S. the scandal was about getting ref's they like and refs they don't like in matches changed. Their was no bribery of refs, their was no blackmail of refs. The same thing happens in england, where a lot of team refused to have graham poll be in charge of their matchs and other refs. What do the FA do, they change the refs for them indirectly. I'm sure shit like this is happening in england, hell everyone complained about dein getting arsenal preferential treatment, teams and mamangers complained all the time about man u gettint more penalties called in their favour than they should incorrectly. Like i said it just is handled badly by the italian's, due to their crazy press over their, but shit like this is happening in every league.

nice post :D
at the end of the day, it is down to personal preferences...
i like to see technical players who can pass the ball around and make excellent movements off the ball e.t.c.
this is why i like the serie A because even the players from the "crappier" teams have excellent technical abilities and can do these things..
bar the top 4 epl teams, the rest of players have below average technical abilities, they can't pass the ball around well and retain possession hence results in a faster paced game as the teams just kick the ball towards the goal...
how can a league be exciting if every year the team that wins the league does so with more than 5 games left, sometimes even more???
how can a league be exciting when one team has won the damn league 8 out of 13 times (since EPL was formed), and before the Chlesea revolution, two teams have been trading first and second place for the last 6-7 years??
is that excitement for you??
whatever floats your boat...
bar this year, serie a has ALWAYS gone down to the wire..hell, Inter has lost out on two scudetti on the last matchday...
Not to mention Italian team performances in CL and the fact that the national just won the WC...

Well that is a very naive and simplistic view to have.
There are many factors which inflluence the attendance.
- Economic depression - high unemployment. There's some things more important than football.
- The off field problems of calciopoli, fan violence and the derelict stadiums.
- Every game now being on TV
- The fact that there's a number of teams who just constantly achieve mid table medicority
- A number of big teams are in the lower leagues - Juve, Bolonga, Napoli, Genoa, etc. Whilst a number of small teams are in Serie A - Empoli, Siena, Chievo, Ascoli, etc
The decline in quality since the early 00's is also a factor but you can't use it to argue that it proves that Serie A is behind any league. In it's heyday, Serie A was vastly superior to the EPL and also La Liga, nowadays whatever way you look at it there isn't too much difference between the leagues. You could Serie A is behind these two leagues but citing attendance numbers is not the way to go around saying that.
It should be better next season, but there's one thing that has to be said --
I could say the same for La Liga, EPL and the Bundesliga. Neither league has really featured any games I've been overly impressed with bar the odd game here and there. Whilst I find Serie A usually features at least one great game a week. It just comes down to preference...
That's a good point and I see where you are coming from. However, I don't think you can say certain players are not putting in the effort :)

well dbz has a point honestly...something is wrong about the serie A.
espically this season..last season was good and it was enjoyable.
but still something is wrong about it, usually the games that i watch this season have a sucky commentator and the audio quality sux just like the video quality. which sux, because its serie A one of the three biggest leagues in the world.
and its true the last couple of games that i watched had alot fo empty seats.
but i cant wait till juve and ac come back from their recent struggles, they light things up in serie A...i personnaly think if inter dont up their game next season they are going down.

I will agree that the camera angles and the English commentary is awfull. (I watch the Italian version as much as possible) They need to adopt some of the latest techology available and move the camera's closer to the pitch. Good time to go HDTV!

I'll admit, I'm one of those who doesn't watch a Serie A game unless it's a derby or has a good rating. So at the start of the season I was really happy to discover all this amazing Serie A action when I watched Gazetta Football Italia. I really started to like the league.
That show is now gone so Serie A has fallen off my radar. So everyone please click my sig! ;)
I didn't get to watch Serie A in the 90s. Maybe those of you with some classic games from the 90s can share some of that Serie A magic with us. Maybe Ronaldo or George Weah in their prime. Or maybe even a Maradona game.

Maybe italian fotball will be less boring now when the 52 year old comedian Gene Gnocchi has been signed by Parma. Maybe he'll help the club to stay in Serie A :D

you can say italian football is boring but a world cup and a champions league winners (ac milan) under their belts is undeniable.

there's too much negativity in italian football. Focus too much on destroying and the opportunism approaches. Offensive football that concentrates on creating instead of destroying is obviously more exciting to watch... maybe not as practical, flexible or effective as the trenching and counter attacks, but pleases the eyes more.
