"I'm leaving"

After 10 + years with Real Madrid, Roberto Carlos announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season. "It's time for a change, I spoke to Mijatovic, with the president and I'm leaving. I will not renew my contract. It's my decision to leave just like it was my decision to stay this year. I have three or four more years left of football and I want to play at a top level, I don't know if I will go back to Brasil, or Qatar, or some place else. I don't want to fool the madridistas. It's better that I leave Real Madrid now and think about my life a little more", said RC.

The player was blamed by many fans for the elimination at the hands of Bayern Munich. "I'm 33 years old and I don't deserve to suffer. I've been at this club for 11 years in which we won everything there was to win during 7 of them, but you lose a match and all the blame has fallen on my shoulders. I don't accept that", he said.

Well, the way I see it is that he was very solid during long parts of the season but injuries took it's toll. The best thing is probably for him to leave. He's already done it all with Madrid and there's nothing to gain by him staying, especially since it seems that in recent years he has been the go-to guy whenever a Madrid fan has needed a player to 'throw under the bus'.

When thing I'm sure all Madrid fans and fans of football in general will agree with is that he has been the best left-back in Real Madrid history and probably the best left-back in football history along with Maldini (completely different players impossible to compare). If anything I give Maldini the edge because of his consistency for so long, but RC is the best attacking fullback ever. In his prime he was unstoppable.

i would highly doubt that he would consider a move to the EPL considering his struggles with fitness for the past few years.

my guess that he is going to take the money somewhere before retiring rich and happy.

real's website has yet to comment but i could have sworn he signed an extension for next year, earlier this year.

if he is indeed finished, he had an incredible run for real. in spite of his mental laps against bayern, he has been terrific this year when he has been healthy. i would hate for the bayern match to be his last since he is out for another month.

oh dear,, what a legend.. me respect him a lot :)

his last blunder against bayern perhaps finalize his decision...

well, marcelo will come next season, it's a good decision for him to move, instead of warming the bench :o

No, if Carlos decide to stay, I would think the next coach will still prefer Carlos over Marcelo. Carlos is much more experienced than Marcelo and knows what European football is like, I'm sure Carlos can still cut it, for at least 2 more years at Real, given if he is fit. Usually, when someone grows old, first thing that goes is usually speed, then injuries will pick up, the former isn't really a big problem for Roberto because he is still fast even for his age but I can't say the same for the latter. It's really injuries thats hampering his season at Real. I would welcome him with open arms if he decides to stay as I don't believe Marcelo have what it takes to cut it just yet.

r.carlos's decision is also like zidane's decision to retire...they both said that they want to retire becouse they have not won any trophies and want the youngsters to take their place.

so sad he was truly an icon of madrid his goal scoring record also says something whens he is a defender.

R.CARLOS i will remember you for ever just like zidane and rivaldo.

a true Real Madrid legend. if it was up to me, i'd say just retire from football completely. i cant imagine him in another shirt.Im glad hes leaving with dignity and giving us Madridstas all he could. possibly one of the greatest left-backs of all time. atleast hes leaving the right way and not leaving the decision up the club.
damn im sad.

I have nothing but respect for him. Just like Zidane, it was an honor to watch him in Real Madrid shirt. But I guess it's time to move on.

Good decision, he's already done a lot, he doesn't have to prove anything. All the pressure by the fans and the media are surely annoying him more than he's willing to take, so it's time to go.

I know he said he's still got "3 or 4 years" left to play, but if I were him, I'd just retire and go behind the scenes or something.
