Yea, I don't think many people liked the commercials last year with the colors of passion theme, or whatever.
I don't know what MLS team I should support.
I used to support the Tampa Bay Mutiny (because they were only 25 minutes away from me), but they have folded since...
Is there any team that straight-up plays attack football? Always tries to scores a bunch of goals even when they're winning by several goals?
I've narrowed down the teams to these three:
- D.C United (my grandparents live in Maryland, so they're kind of close. And they sometimes play attractive football)
- F.C Dallas (I liked their grit, and entertaining play in the few games I saw them play)
- Colorado Rapids (because of Clint Dempsey [who was sold to Fulham], can because they seemed to score a lot of late goals last year)
Could anyone help me?

Wow... ABC just ran a "Famous Freds" graphic after Fred came on for DC United. Apparently pictures of Fred Flintstone and Right Said Fred set to the music "I'm Too Sexy" is more important than showing what is happening on the field. I had such high hopes for this MLS season too...

The state of MLS is sad if ESPN keeps this crap up. From the Fred clip to the ball tracks and the ticker at the bottom of the screen. The commentary was awful as usual. I want to jump into the tv and tell them to shut the f up! Meaningless chatter! And don't even mention the frickin' banners of the upcoming episodes of Lost and some other bullshit show. ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!
How are FSC games? I don't get FSC now and I can't get dish.

They mentioned like 100 times that it was a sold out game but it looked like 75% of the seats were empty. What gives? Watching Columbus and New York on HDNET now, yep the commentary sucks as well. The stadium is empty as hell. How will MLS grow let alone survive with this kind of attendance. This game sounds like the stands at a high school match.

Yea they sold out but I imagine many people didn't show because of the weather. Also the stadium was decently full for the first half but after the second half many people went home. It was in the 20's with a brisk wind and snow. The stadium is located in the middle of nowhere so the wind really picks up. I couldn't feel my feet or my hands for most of the game and I was wearing long johns, jeans, 2 shirts, a fleece, and a big coat and I was still frozen.

Thanks CRef ...
Three things of note:
1. Gerry Dobson is just terrible - I never thought I'd be able to hear someone's eyes rolling but somehow Craig Forrest's mic picked it up on several occasions. Calling Toronto FC, "Canada" four or five times screams, "can't we hire someone else for footy in this country?"
2. It's too bad Sportsnet couldn't get their cameras inside the stadium. I could have gotten tighter camera angles watching the stadium on Google satellite maps!
3. Guzan (I think that's the keeper's name) was just fantastic, and Toronto deserved much better.

We are a young team, with a great style, and even though we are only in our third season we already get more support from our fans then that of our in town rival Galaxy.

The Red Bulls have traded former No. 1 overall MLS draft pick Marvell Wynne to the Toronto FC for a second round pick in the 2008 MLS Draft and a partial allocation, multiple sources within MLS confirmed on Tuesday.
The deal reunites Wynne with former Red Bulls coach Mo Johnston, who traded up in the 2006 MLS Draft to make Wynne the first player chosen.
A former standout right back at UCLA and for the U.S. Under-20 national team, Wynne started 23 games for the Red Bulls last season, impressing with his blazing speed and imposing strength.
His poor touch and raw technical ability made him a work in progress, which may have made him expendable in the eyes of Red Bulls coach Bruce Arena, who started Hunter Freeman in his place on Sunday against FC Dallas.
The Red Bulls, known as the MetroStars at the time, traded defender Jason Hernandez and the No. 5 overall pick to Chivas USA for the No. 1 overall selection in the 2006 draft, which it used to select Wynne, widely regarded as the best prospect in that year's draft.
The trade makes sense for a Toronto FC squad that has struggled mightily in its first two game as an MLS expansion team. The Canadian club has surrendered seven goals in two matches, including four in Saturday's 4-0 loss to New England.
The move also frees up a senior roster spot the Red Bulls needed for newly-acquired Colombian forward Juan Pablo Angel, who is joining the New York club from Aston Villa.
I thought Wynne was class when he played in the WYC in 2005, but I haven't seen him since. Hopefully he can get some PT and be ready for the NT sometime.

I rate him too, but New York's management has forever been a joke. They have no patience with their draft picks.
Faria, Davis, Clark, Gaven, Ward, Bradley, and now Wynne...
They love those allocations for museum pieces, though.

Wynalda just said in his halftime segment(Red card, game ball, etc) that Roger Clemens deserves a red card for coming back to the Yankees.
Now hasn't Wynalda been in trouble for opening his mouth before or does my memory deceive to me?why does he need to say these things? In my opinion it'll only lead to more negative reflections on the MLS.

I don't think Becks will play in the All Star game. Galaxy will be hosting a tournament which will be when becks makes his debut. I just did a google search (http://www.google.com/search?q=beckham%2C+mls+all+star+game&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_enMY177MY215), and I didn't find anything definitive, but I did find a bunch of articles from January that speculated about whether he would play in it or not and a wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLS_All-Star_2007) that suggested that the MLS All Star game would be the first game that he would be available for (not that he would necessarily play in it).....

Well, the All star games is based on fan voting, if I'm correct so we'd have to put Becks on the team not even knowing if heel be a humongous success his first year in the League.
If the All Star game is chosen by a certain coach I don't think Becks would be chosen because he would not have played at all in the league.

If you click on one of those articles from January (on the google search page I linked to) you'll see quotes from Don Garber talking about how as commissioner he gets 2 picks of his own and Beckham will be one of those picks if he's available.
Edit....here's a direct link (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/soccer/mls/2007-01-25-all-star-site_x.htm) to one of the articles
"If he's available, he will be available to be selected" for the All-Star game, said Ivan Gazidis, the MLS deputy commissioner. "There's two commissioner's picks. I leave you to speculate whether he'll get selected."
Apparently it was Gazidis, not Garber, who the quotes were from...
Edit 2....just as a bit of info, Freddy Adu was selected to the All Star team his first year as a commissioner's pick...

Its a shame because my seat is in the corner and I was looking forward to getting some heckling in.
On one hand I want soccer to succeed...on the other I want LA to fail miserably.

Beckham trains alone due to sore ankle
AFP
July 17, 2007
LOS ANGELES (AFP) - David Beckham suited up Monday but chose to work out alone during his first training session with the Los Angeles Galaxy as he rehabs a sore ankle.
The 32-year-old former England captain was limited to light exercises and ball work with the injury originally sustained on England duty back in June continuing to bother him.
Beckham is still hoping to be able to make his Major League Soccer debut in Saturday's friendly against English Premier League giant Chelsea, but his new employers will not want to risk their multi-million dollar signing in an exhibition game unless they are sure he is healthy enough to play.
Beckham was officially unveiled as a Galaxy player on Friday as he begins a five-year contract with Los Angeles.

Looks like Johnson doesn't have the bottle to play in the Premiership. He turned down the offer for Derby. What is he thinking? Does he think the big 4 are going to come after him? I believe Derby offered $3.6m for Johnson.
He should have taken the spot, most likely he'll get a good amount of playing time and precious Premiership experience. Even if Derby go right back down he'll have that exposure and get to showcase his skills, then maybe a bigger club would go after him.
Simon323says
26-07-2007, 12:40 AM
I'm not sure that he has what it takes to play in the Premiership. His performance so far this year in MLS closely mirrors that of Juan Pablo Angel, who couldn't hold down a roster spot at Aston Villa. Tearing up the MLS isn't necessarily enough.
That said, he is tearing up MLS, so unless he's coming to New York, let's get him off to England.

Personal man of the match is Mark Burch he's just exploded on to the United roster, LA and Columbus are certainly sorry they pitched him like a sack of potatoes. DA BOZ Bobby Boswell had an amazing save the one time Perkins made a mistake tonight that denied FCD their best chance at goal.
Sidenote: Rest of the season is looking good, if we beat Chivas we meet New England the new sole leaders of the league, and then the rest of the regular season schedule is pracitcally a vacation: RSL at home, Chicago away, TFC at home, KC away, then Chicago at home and Columbus at home. We clearly have a shot at running away with the Supporter's Shield given the schedule.

An exciting fast paced match D.C. was looking invincible, and then that fuckin perkins own goal slowed things down considerably. Screw the ESPN2 commentators though for acting like Perkins is a blunder machine, the guys the best keeper in the league he just had a horrible moment here and before the season even began. The only guy who seems to be keeping form is Marc Burch.
Team was way confident, shooting from the halfway (and damn near scoring) and all sorts of stuff. Just get your heads back in the game guys. I think Emilio still has a good shot at a hat trick tonight though.

The two MLS games I have my eye on are the one against Chicago as we return from the break. We'll be missing Fred, Christian, and Ben Olsen, so that one might not be pretty. The other is against Kansas City who's just outside of a chance for the playoffs.

We dominate the top teams in MLS and international teams like CD Guadalajara and Chelsea when we're in form, but we piddle around to teams like LA RSL and TO. The race for the last 2 playoff spots is still pretty interesting.
With one game left to play:
Chicago: 37 pts, next game vs LA
KC: 37 pts (but lost twice to CHI this season), next game vs Dallas
Colorado: 35 pts, next game vs RSL
Columbus: 34 pts but already eliminated.
LA: 33 pts, game thursday vs RBNY and sunday against CHI
For Chicago, a tie vs LA will guarantee them a spot, and a win guarantees 7th seed.
For KC, a win guarantees a spot, a tie will do so only with some other results.
Beyond that, all the other possible results depend on each other, especially since there are a lot of possible scenarios that tie in points.

I agree with you (of course), although Perkins certainly seems to have Chad Barrett's number...
However it's unlikely that DC would play either of them anytime before the MLS cup final itself, since whoever holds the 8th spot would be put into the western conference bracket. (although if Chicago wins and KC doesn't, then Chicago would be 4th in the eastern bracket and play DC again right away).

Just in case that question hasn't been answered, it was Blanco (and of course the rest of the Fire). It could have been 3-0 or worse if Barrett and Wanchope (and Rolfe, but mostly Barrett and Wanchope) hadn't wasted so many great chances. (and to be fair, Cannon had a spectacular day).
I was at the game and it was awfully frustrating to watch that.
As for Beckham, he was clearly not at 100% in his 30 minutes. He had some dangerous crosses, but he looked a little sluggish in his movement. And fortunately the Fire didn't give up any fouls in very dangerous spots.

Of course you want your team to win but I was actually hoping for a tie because I think I would rather play Chivas (especially without Razov and now Lawson Vaughn) than DC, who have looked better in the past few games.

The past few games have been our worse, and Luciano and Jaime were injured last game, not to mention we never seem to beat Chicago in the playoffs. :(
D.C. United has officially pulled off both back to back MLS Cup victories and now back to back Supporters' Shield victories, and I still think the Supporters' Shield is a much sweeter victory. Being champion of 30 games vs. being champion of 3 hmm... which is better?
Anywho I'm still going to make play off predictions (winners bolded):
Eastern Conference Title: D.C. United vs. New England Revolution
Western Conference Title: Chivas USA vs. Houston Dynamo
MLS Cup: D.C. United vs. Houston Dynamo
Being from D.C. obviously this is horribly biased. If I weren't from here then Chicago vs. New England for the eastern conference, and The Revs for the Cup. The playoffs just always put a bad taste in my mouth, that you do all the HARD work, and some yokels who win 3 games get to call themselves champions. Even the worse teams can pull out a 3 game winning streak.

Neither is better, they are just 2 different things. One is a sprint, and the other a marathon. The MLS cup playoffs are a tournament, just like the world cup. I do kind of wish the conference finals were a home-and-home though.

I pretty much agree with your picks. And for sure the hardest one to call is DC vs Chicago (i guess I'm biased too). Chicago are definitely on form lately. If only they could finish.... I would say they should bench wanchope but I dont know who they would replace him with... It's a damn shame that Mapp is still hurt because then i would put him in the midfield and push Rolfe back up top in place of Wanchope.
I don't know if ESPN got lucky on which of the first-round playoffs they got, or if they got to pick, but they got the right one for national coverage.

Crying shame they didn't give him a fair shot at TFC, as he was a real asset for them during his time there, and they SORELY needed him during that scoring drought. So what do you think are the odds on Moreno and/or Gomez being there next year?
Gomez I think depends on 2 factors, 1) if the second DP rule is enacted, as he's making max non-DP dollars right now 2) If Veron is signed, a deal which has recently come back on the table.
As for Jaime, I'd love to see him back but if the money is right elsewhere it seems sort of natural that he'd go. His ability to hold the ball is much touted, but one thing he doesn't get much credit for his simply how he lifts this team up. Everyone seems to rally and play their ass off when he shows up, and for a team that seems to take no interest in MLS beyond securing the Supporters' Shield lately, thats an asset that will be missed. He's becoming horribly injury prone though, and may have at most 1 or 2 seasons of play in him anywhere.
Gun to my head? Probably both go and collect paychecks in Saudi Arabia. Alecko Eskandarian is back, probably meaning the office already knows Jaime is taking off, and the Veron deal is perhaps in its final stages (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2007/11/mls_and_more.html).

"taking no interest in MLS beyond securing the supporters shield" ??
Firstly, I call securing the supporters shield taking a pretty significant interest. As you so bitterly pointed out a couple of weeks ago, it's significant and takes more investment and overall success than the MLS cup.
Secondly, just because they didn't win in the first round of the playoffs hardly means they didn't take any interest. You sound just like Hugo Sanchez bitching that the better team didn't win the Gold Cup. The better team in a season is the one that wins the most games. The better team in a game is the one that scores more goals. The better team in the playoffs is the one that's still there at the end. That's how playoffs work. Besides, in the MLS cup we have 2 of the best 4 teams in the league. If you factor in the fact that Chivas lost both of their strikers and never really had a chance in the playoffs, then 2 of the best 3 teams. I don't call that a failure of the playoff system. Anyway, I'm digressing, and it doesnt matter. Don Garber loves the playoffs, and realistically any league in this country will almost certainly have them, so they aren't going anywhere.
Anyway, I hope Gomez and Moreno stick around, they are awfully fun to watch.

When I made that statement I wasn't thinking playoffs, I was thinking about the period the past two years when the Supporters' Shield was all but assured and United took its foot off the gas, leading to a complacent team in the first round of the playoffs. I mean the team practically had the Shield won by the All-Star break in '06, and proceeded to piss away the rest of the season until the playoffs.
Anyway without Jaime and the presence he brings to this team would we have even won the Shield? Nope. During that really shaky period early in the season when no one was sure if this team was D.C. United or a group of pretenders, a Jaime Moreno being injured or away with the Bolivian National Team was the difference between a win or a loss. Once he returned from the Gold Cup especially he really turned this team around.
About the cup, if I had to pick 2 non-DC United teams to contend in the cup match, who better than Houston and New England? When D.C. United was busy pissing around the bottom of the league making RSL and TFC almost look like serious competition, Houston and New England were THE teams to beat. What two teams better deserve a shot at the second place cup!

Interesting question. I'm actually surprised he was fired. I mean, I wouldn't exactly call his first season a big success, but it was certainly better than last, and I think Redbull's stated goals of winning the championship after 1 season are pretty unrealistic, especially given that the salary cap keeps you from just throwing money at it.

just thought it was worth noting Alecko Eskandarian has returned home to D.C. United. Crying shame they didn't give him a fair shot at TFC, as he was a real asset for them during his time there, and they SORELY needed him during that scoring drought. RSL is just a train wreck though, no matter how much D.C. United they rip off they just can't duplicate the success. Hell, they were a few players off from our entire 2004 championship team.
he didn't want to be in TO until the very end.... during the first 4 game losing streak, he was a sour character in the locker room, and was always questioning management's decisions (not that he was wrong to do so.. but do it between u and the coach, and not in front of the rest of the team... )

If thats true thats a real shame, he was always a fan favorite here, but yeah if you're in the midst of a losing streak Alecko's not the type of guy who's going to let anything slide. He's not a graceful loser.
As an aside he seemed glowing about Toronto itself in videos and blogs, if not with management however. Have any sources (or atleast the paper or blog) where you read about Esky's conflicts? I'd love to read up on that stuff.

about the New York coaching situation, I'm reading via Goff (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2007/11/what_offseason.html) that New York is attempting to get Peter Nowak.
Why not try for Thomas Rongen too? You can bring back Bruce Arena and have a trifecta of D.C. United MLS Cup winning coaches. All that, and you'll only be marginally better. Or hell why not combine with RSL and become a SuperClub composed of the D.C. United coaching and playing graveyard. It can be the Premier Club in Mediocrity. "Straw Graspers F.C." hows that for a club name? Might as well, theres no way LA and TFC don't greatly improve this year, and it'll be lonely at the bottom without some friends!

If it is PG County, then it would likely be College Park/Hyattsville. Which is better than say Laurel or Bowie or New Carrolton or some such other crap. But leaving DC would suck because of the Metro situation.
If Fenty fucks this up, I am seriously going to dedicate myself to ensuring that he is not reelected. The whole situation is disturbing. And it makes me particularly pissed because he supported public funds for the baseball stadium bamboozle/money pit, but he won't just give over the property (which came free from the Federal government) to allow United to develop Poplar Point at their own expense. Instead, development at Poplar Point sits at a standstill and what ever does happen there will be a traditional DC piece of crap office project thing that will turn the area into a new Crystal City. If fucking hate all the corruption around developers in DC. It is disgusting.

looks like the MLS is having a good off-season. Seattle making good strides and may look like a contender out the box, if the swede is healthy. beckham might be lost to milan but there are stars in waiting to see if they want to dip their toes in the MLS. i heard that korean star ahn jung-hwan is looking for a suitor and bobby convey, fresh off this contract ending with reading, is looking at teams in the MLS. kinda excited about the upcoming season. with expansions coming in the future and the distraction of beckham hopefully gone, we should see better quality from the fellas.

Everyone is saying Portland and Vancouver only because they are financially ready. That would be three Western Conference clubs in a span of 3 years. If that's the case, then St. Louis, Atlanta, a second club in New York, and Ottawa will be favorites next time expansion come around.

I don't know how real Vancouver would be. They used to have the 86ers up there and they were poorly supported. Portland seems to make a lot of sense because the Timbers are already well supported and Portland does not have many professional teams. Basically, they have the Blazers and their minor league hockey team and both are heavily supported. I think they also have a minor league baseball team as well. The problem with a Portland team is TV. There is just no way that they can bring in the kind of dollars from a regional sports network like DC, Houston, Dallas, LA or NY. I personally would not be surprised to see another team in Texas in San Antonio before too long. And there has been some debate about a San Diego team too.
Miami dropping out does not surprise me because they don't support sports down there. Only American Football, nothing else. No one watches the Marlins or the Heat or whatever else they've got. And their last team went under because no one went to that either. Cities that I think have a chance to support a team profitably are:
- Another NYC/LI team
- Rochester
- Hartford
- Raleigh
- San Antonio
- San Diego
- Portland
- SF/Oakland
- Vancouver
- Montreal
- Ottawa
- St. Louis
Put a team anywhere else and it will probably fail.

i doubt atlanta can support a club. i'v been to many silverback games up there. the stadium they play in is like a very expensive high school field. holds max 2000 people and they never were packed when i went. its best that they just bring back the silverbacks and keep them in the usl. the only thing that matters in atlanta is the braves. thrashers get ok attendance and the hawks get ok (they still have problems filling seats even with the team playing well this season).

There is an inside source that's confirming it's Portland and Vancouver
So MLS is down to 4 expansion bids. 2 of which, Portland and Vancouver, already have a solid fanbase, an intense rivalry against Seattle and each other spanning over 30 years, and a growing approval by the city for stadium renovations. Those two just sound like the most logical picks.
I never understood the significance of Ottawa and poor St. Louis just lack more financial investments. But I'm sure STL will have a better shot in MLS in the future when the league reopens expansion talks. Montreal, too.

their next home matches against san jose and los angeles have sold out and with fewer than a 1,000 more tickets left for the columbus game. i wonder if there would have been a significant decrease in numbers if sounders were to start out their season terribly. i doubt it tho since their fans are well in tuned w/ the game. chivas are doing great, i'll also be looking out for RSL to make the playoffs. and to think they were once off the map of title contenders. their FO have shown their commitment to the club and there are promotion advertisement of the team circulating since they moved into their new stadium so i gotta give kudos to salt lake.

What can be said about the Sounders that hasn't been said already? Totally exceeded expectations, even this early on. I'm not positive they will be able to maintain this level of success, much like Hull City in the EPL. They dropped off quite a bit during the second half of the season.

I know the history of the name, but it is also a stupid play off United. I have a feeling that this is intentional to stoke a Philly-DC rivalry since our rivalry with NY/NJ died because they suck so hard it wasn't even fun anymore. It is only a couple hour drive afterall.

LOL @ NY/NJ suckage. A Union/United rivalry will be intense for sure. The league is definitely pushing towards a policy of proximity rivalries.
While we're sort of on the topic of expansion, seems Joey Saputo of Montreal de Impact is getting close to finally obtaining a franchise after a May 7th meeting with Garber and Abbott in New York. Although he has a realistic chance of joining in 2012, this man is confident we'll see a team in 2011! Adding to the total number of expansion teams in 2011 to 3 (Vanc, PDX, now Montreal). Only time will tell how valid his claims will be. Remember, his team drew about 55,000 to this year's Champion's League match.

Twas a great match.
All the buzz about MLS expansion is great by the way, especially with the way Seattle came out swinging, it only makes things better for the state of the league.
Have any of you guys thought about how sick it would be if the league actually swelled to 20 teams and we could actually have a relegation/promotion system where the USL was the 2nd tier...

Things are starting to look a bit more interesting. Im hoping for strong competition between the clubs in the northwest and then also between canadian clubs. I dont know how things work now with the MLS basically taking teams from USL. I really really wish we had relegation and promotion between the MLS and USL first and second division. It would make things 10x more interesting. I understand some clubs may be in financially sensitive positions but if you have an established fan base you should be able to survive. I dont think we will ever see relegation and promotion in north america though.

Probably not, mainly because of the foundations of how MLS was set up aka east and west conferences and playoffs etc. But it would be sick if there was promotion/relegation. I kinda get the sense that a promotion/relegation system would intensify the fanbase for teams. You'd really have something to root for whether it was your team fighting to fend off relegation or battling for promotion etc.

Houston Dynamo forward Brian Ching has been fined $500 by Major League Soccer for criticizing the officiating in a recent game through his Twitter account.
Ching didn't play in Houston's 2-1 loss in Seattle on Saturday because he was playing for the United States later that night in a Gold Cup match in Foxborough, Mass. Ching watched the Dynamo on television.
Houston led 1-0 when Seattle's Fredy Montero fired a shot in the 32nd minute. Dynamo defender Mike Chabala kicked the ball away near the goal line, but linesman Emiliano Monje said the ball crossed the line and awarded the goal, tying the game at 1-1.
Within minutes, Ching posted his reaction on Twitter.
"Ref in seattle just cheated the dynamo," Ching tweeted. "What a joke. Not even close. Ref is a cheat."
He apologized in two Twitter posts the next morning, blaming "the heat of the moment."

Don't know who's watching this Sounders/Fire game but it's been pretty exciting all match. Ljunberg just got sent off after receiving a yellow for diving and then getting a second one not 20 seconds later for dissent. Fuckin' ridiculous...
Maybe it's my hatred for El Tri but I really don't think Blanco is that good anymore, and he's fuckin' old too yet the commentators keep jerkin' him off all the time even though his moves never come off like they're supposed to.

Agree with you on all points.
This referee, Baldomero Toledo, is the biggest Douchebag in MLS. He ALWAYS sends people off (and often for stupid reasons). I lost a very important bet with my girlfriend because of him sending of a New England player the season before last ;).
It was a great game with great atmosphere, Im getting ready to watch KC-LA now.

many of you know how i feel about MLS already, but contrary to those who just opine about it without any basis...i do watch games. especially during the summer as there isnt any football on really.
furthermore, i watch almost all NYRB matches, simply because they are on local TV here. certainly not a fan.
anyway- i was watching yesterdays match v Colorado and my brother who isnt a big or knowledgeable soccer fan at all was with me for a bit.
he was asking about the quality of MLS, recognizable players, etc. and i told him in the years since the league has been formed, there has been a vast improvement in quality.
now, all this happened right as Ubiparapovic was sent off for his tackle on a Colorado player. at which point i went off about how the league isnt terrible, but when there is officiating such as this, it makes the league worse off. NY played a long while down a man, after a challenge that was simply a YC, but the ref already was moving to the back pocket. after being positioned quite well too, so he basically thought it was a red offense straight out. awful.
ive seen many terrible officiated matches from MLS referees in the league, friendlies, like recently, GOLD Cup matches i think, on and on.
fix the referees, let the game be decided by the players, the league will improve more, no?

Are there any Chicago Fire fans on these boards? Some friends and I are thinking of heading to a match in the coming weeks and had questions about best ticket options/where to sit/where to tailgate. Tickets are still available for the Galaxy match, so we may opt to go heckle Becks. :D

MLS to break during 1st-round Cup games
Major League Soccer will take a two-week break during the group phase of the World Cup for the first time next summer.
MLS announced Wednesday that it will not play any games from June 11-25. The league also does not plan to schedule games on the days of the World Cup semifinal and final.
"The league has changed; the country has changed," MLS president Mark Abbott said. "There's a large and growing fan base for professional soccer."
The length of the MLS season will not change. Each team will probably play an additional midweek game to make up for the missed time.

Columbus, LA, Houston, Chivas, and Seattle are all in. 3 spots remain. Who's getting in?
Chicago play tonight against Chivas. Anything but a loss and they'll be in. I like Toronto's chances. They play the abysmal Red Bulls. After that there's a handful of teams who could get in.
Yes their are the most of the matches which are going to be
more and more exciting one and more and more important one.
The MLS are going to be more man to make the marketing
and really to get in to it so that they are going to have
lots of competition.
Thanks

I think Paul Mariner will be even better. He and Nicol have been excellent and picking draft talent for the revs, and you really need someone with MLS experience, either as coach or technical director, just to have the experience with all the weird unique things about MLS (salary caps, drafts, allocations, trade rules, etc)

It is sort of like they intentionally made it complicated just because. And I think each year they create a new contract category just for sh*ts and giggles. Worst of all, I have a sneaking feeling that current Arsenal CEO Ivan Gazidis was probably the most responsible for these shambles, since he was in the founding management team of MLS, the former Deputy Commish and also President of Soccer United Marketing. Thankfully, I have no love for the man and will just say that I am sorry he is affiliated with my club.

Watching the Colorado/Portland replay on tv.
**SPOILERS**
The Timers definitely have their work cut out for them. Based on the first half-got of play, they are being completely outclassed. Midfield gives away possession entirely too easy, and defense is slow to react. Can't really say anything about their offense, since they haven't done squat at that end.

Red Bulls acquire De Rosario from Toronto FC (http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/red-bulls-acquire-de-rosario-toronto-fc)
NEW YORK – Dwayne De Rosario has a new home, and the New York Red Bulls have a new engine for their offense.
The Red Bulls acquired the five-time MLS Best XI selection via a trade with Toronto FC for two players and a future draft pick on Friday, giving New York head coach Hans Backe the playmaker he’s sought since taking the reins in the Big Apple last season.
The Red Bulls shipped talented young defensive midfielder and 2010 MLS SuperDraft pick Tony Tchani and South African midfielder Danleigh Borman to Toronto, along with their first-round pick in the 2012 SuperDraft.
De Rosario is eligible to play in New York’s matchup against the Houston Dynamo on Saturday (7:30 pm ET, Matchday Live, Direct Kick), while Tchani and Borman are eligible to play when Toronto host Chivas USA (1 pm ET, TSN).
Agudelo and Henry should be pleased with this acquisition.

Good read, DD. Amazing story, and here's hoping Omphroy's successful in continuing to manage the condition.
I'm not the biggest TFC supporter but I'm sure glad DeRo is gone. Any player who celebrates a goal by pretending to sign checks is pathetic.
I went to the TFC v Portland game a few weeks ago and I never realized how little DeRo does in games. He just sat on the touchline waiting for the ball, did nothing defensively, didn't make any real effort, and had a go at teammates who didn't pass him the ball. Obviously he must have just been disinterested with the whole contract/trade fiasco going on but still. He's a local lad playing for the local pro footy team. So now he goes to New York expecting to be the star guy again, but problem is there are two widely respected international players already occupying the DP spots. Maybe he'll win a "championship" but in doing so he's made Toronto much better for the future. Despite that it seems like most local support are furious at him, for being a primadonna money-grabbing whore.
Sort of off topic but its awesome to see the league is slowly picking up steam and becoming more and more respected. Full-internationals are speaking of it with admiration and maybe some will come over before their 30's eventually. I think the league needs to re-design some aspects (financial, "trade" system like other North American sports). It sucks too that the league has to operate outside the typical season window, and run through the summer.

He really didn't play much defense here in Houston, especially the last two years he was here, and constantly killed attacks by either not passing the ball or just stoped playing because he wasn't passed to. In the end he wore out his welcome with Kinnear due to his attitude and complaining about not being the highest paid on the team and was shipped to Toronto for basically nothing while Holden is seen as the key lose out of the two amongst most fans because of his willingest to due the things DeRo wouldn't. He has the ability to pull off something game changing but you have to put up with 89 minutes of his crap just to get it.
