D.C. United to play in South American club tournament
May 21, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Four-time MLS champion D.C. United will play in the Copa Sudamericana, a prestigious South American club tournament this fall.

United was invited to the event after a third-place finish in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup this year.

"Everyone in our organization is thrilled to be a part of Copa Sudamericana for a second time," said United president/CEO Kevin Payne. "This is a great opportunity for us to compete with the best teams in our hemisphere, and for our fans to support us as we play in a very important international competition."

D.C. United was the first team from Major League Soccer to participate in the tournament when it was invited to play in the 2005 edition. That year, D.C. faced Universidad Catolica of Chile in a two-game aggregate goal series. United tied 1-1 at RFK Stadium, then lost 3-2 at Santiago, Chile, blowing a 2-0 lead.

United won the MLS Cup in 1996, '97, '99 and 2004.

Lately international play has meant a great performance from D.C. in the international games whether it be CONCACAF/Chelsea/Celtic, but then a return and some shoddy performances in MLS so I'm a bit mixed. Still proud of United though for continuing to post up for everyone who supports MLS not just United fans.

EDIT: AHHH FUCK, HOW DO YOU EDIT THE TITLE OF THE TREAD?

good for D.C. though. Let's hope they start to turn things around.

It will be played sometime between 9/11 and 10/4 (or maybe on those dates, nobody is really sure), which means I'll be able to go to the home leg :).

Depending on the outcome of SuperLiga this might actually be the third encounter between the two sides this year.

DCU Draws Chivas

For the second time this year, United will face Mexican club Chivas on the international stage, this time in the Copa Sudamericana. The first match will be played in Washington, the return leg in Guadalajara, beginning in mid-September. As you recall, United lost to the Goats in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup semifinals on a 3-2 aggregate last month.

Tom Soehn's reaction? "We just can't get away from 'em!"

On a more serious note, he added: "I truly wanted to see them in the tournament, but probably not this early. There's some unfinished business on our side."

Will United fair better this time around? Or will the wear and tear of the MLS season hurt their chances?

Not to mention this comes in the middle of the season, and the three amigos Bofo, Bravo, and Medina are taking a hike, revenge is looking pretty sweet!

All MLS Teams Should Stick To MLS.

Maybe In 10 years MLS will be ablet to compete with Mexican & South American Clubs.

This is good for DC United. So far they haven't been able to win international trophees but the more they try the closer they get. Maybe this will be their chance.

Nope, they're different tournaments.
I'm not sure about the rest of the Americas, but here in Brazil, the teams don't pay much attention to the Copa Sudamericana.

It's like, Libertadores is the Champions League, and Sudamericana is the UEFA Cup.
The first 4 teams in the brazilian championship get to go to Libertadores, and 5th-12th fight for a spot on Sudamericana, so it's a lower level. Our champion plays both tournaments.

I hope United goes deep in the tournament and gets a good result. I think I've said this before, but I'm all for MLS teams getting a chance on the Libertadores cup as well, it would be a good experience.
