Nürnberg stun ten-man Stuttgart
1. FC Nürnberg won the German Cup for the fourth time after completing a dramatic 3-2 win against Bundesliga champions VfB Stuttgart after extra time in a thrilling final on Saturday.
Cacau dismissal
Stuttgart, who won the German title last weekend, were a man short after half an hour after their Brazilian striker Cacau, who had scored the opening goal, was sent off for violent conduct. Denmark midfielder Jan Kristiansen scored the winner in the 109th minute with a spectacular shot from 25 metres that curled past goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand and into the far top corner.
Mintál injury
It was Stuttgart who had first taken the lead against the run on 20 minutes when Cacau chested down a pass on the left before beating Raphael Schäfer with a clever flick to the far post. Nürnberg equalised seven minutes later as Slovakian international striker Marek Mintál got a foot on a low left-wing centre by Dominik Reinhard. Within four minutes, though, Cacau had been sent off and Stuttgart captain Fernando Meira was lucky not to suffer the same fate a minute later after committing a foul on Mintál which saw the striker taken to hospital with knee damage.
Pardo penalty
Marco Engelhardt put Nürnberg ahead two minutes into the second half when he headed in a Javier Pinola corner but ten-man Stuttgart rallied as the clock ticked down and scored a deserved equaliser ten minutes from time, Pardo converting a penalty after Mario Gómez was brought down in the penalty area by Schäfer. Kristiansen, however, had the final say as Nürnberg completed their third win against Stuttgart this season.
