I'm sure some of you were watching the match between Sevilla and Getafe...

During the first half, Antonio Puerta fell to the ground in a moment that looked to be rather innocent. However, we then saw Drago rushing over and urgently trying to pry Puerta's mouth open. Palop and the Sevilla staff soon followed, and after a few scary moments where Puerta was unconscious, he eventually got up under his own power and walked down to the locker room.

To further the story, it's known that in the locker room Puerta collapsed again and stopped breathing. He was rushed to the hospital and placed in Intensive Care. He is said to be stable and alert, but obviously, he'll have to be kept a little while under observation.

Hopefully everything works out ok for him.

That's always scary. :( I hope the guy is okay.

I remember a few seasons ago when Aimar basically fainted on the pitch; I thought he was going to die. (Though to be fair, every time he falls down these days I think he's going to die.)

heres the latest
MADRID, Aug 26 (Reuters) - The prognosis for Sevilla player Antonio Puerta is "very serious" according to doctors following his collapse and loss of consciousness during his side's league match against Getafe on Saturday.

"He is in the intensive care unit where he has been given assisted ventilation and is experiencing hemodynamic instability. The prognosis is very serious," said a medical report issued by the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville.

The 22-year-old Spanish international wingback crouched down and then fell to the ground after jogging back towards his own goal 35 minutes into the game at the Sanchez Pizjuan on Saturday night.

Team mates and medical staff immediately rushed to his side and were seen preventing him from swallowing his tongue as he lost consciousness, but he was able to walk from the pitch.

Doctors said that he collapsed again in the changing rooms and had to be given cardiac resuscitation before being taken to hospital.

"Fortunately the club doctors and the machines managed to resuscitate him but we experienced some terrible moments because the life of the player was in danger," Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido was quoted as saying on the club's Web site (www.sevillafc.es).

That was so scary to watch.
I hope he will be alright and able to live his life normally and continue to play soccer.

Germany's and Schalke's Gerald Asamoah also collapsed with heart problems years ago but he was cleared to continue under the condition that a defibrillator always needs to be on the bench or at training.

That's sad to hear.

They said it was a heart attack.

It's a harsh reminder of the fact that footballers are just as mortal as we are, yeah? I hope his condition improves soon.

I saw the game and saw the incident. It looked terrible. A teammate of his took his tongue out of his throat and I think it saved him until the paramedic came to se him. He stood up and walked out of the stadium and I thought it was over. Apparently it wasn’t and he collapsed again in the dressing room.

When I saw it, I thought he was in a serious condition and he was closed to die. Looked like the same thing that happened to John Terry last season.

Luckily it turned out ok.

I’m not a Sevilla fan but such things you are not even whishing would happen to no one. I hope that he would be all right again and hope he will be playing when he is totally fit.

Good luck Puerta.

Where did the BBC get that he had a heart attack? There's been nothing of the sort reported.

Anyway, Puerta is still in a stable condition, and the doctors are continuing to perform tests. They still don't know exactly what caused the situation, although one specialist has speculated that it may be a result of ARVD (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARVD).

Also, on the radio yesterday, Del Nido reported that Puerta did feint at a time last year, but he was thoroughly checked and cleared to continue playing. From the way Del Nido spoke, it didn't seem to be serious, but it's unclear if the two incidents can be linked.

Hemodynamic instability is a world of difference from cardiac arrest ("heart attack"). You still don't want to take any chances with the heart, but BBC got something confused. Can't be too careful at all. Scary stuff. Thank God nothing worse happened, and hope he gets well soon.

Found this on a football blog:

There is a high chance that there is brain damage. :(

"No podemos obviar que cuando ha habido una parada cardíaca tan prolongada y con sufrimiento cerebral, es esperable tanto una recuperación al 'integrum' como la posibilidad de algún tipo de secuela". http://marca.recoletos.es/edicion/marca/futbol/1a_division/sevilla/es/desarrollo/1029189.html

I am not even close to being an expert in the topic, but he had some sort of heart attack 3 times, produced by what MM detailed. I also heard on Cadena Ser last nite that 75-80% of people who suffer this die instantly. He was saved by the electric shocks that the Sevilla docs provided on the pitch.

A while back, after the faints, he had stress tests and electrocardiograms and nothing was found. They thought it was his high levels of stress ...

It is shocking to know ... I still remmber those intense 120 minutes he played against Schalke and against Espanyol ... he would give it all, back and forth that left lane, it was impressive. Seemed so strong, poor kid. :(

I heard that on the radio this afternoon. The doctor that was on said that it's difficult to determine the level of damage so soon - it can be anything from simple memory loss to something more severe.

This is still all very shocking, because even though there were a few scary moments during the game, Puerta looked so... normal - for lack of a better word - coming off of the field.
