A secret meeting between The Scottish Executive, Glasgow City Council, The Commonwealth Games Committee and corporate institutions took place in London’s Claridges Hotel to discuss the expansion of Celtic Park to 80,000. Work to be completed in time for the games and to coincide with the opening of a new underground rail link.

Planning permission will be a formality and new regulations will be put in place by the Scottish Executive to circumvent any legal challenge that may arise due to the fact that a section of the Main Stand is at this point listed.

Celtic Football Club will not have to finance any of the expansion plans as funding will come from the public purse and corporate finance. It is understood that a leading Wall St investment broker will fund 60% of the whole project in exchange for the naming rights to Celtic Park, Celtic’s current sponsors NIKE will also play a major role.

It is estimated that CFC will make over £150,000,000 on the Naming Rights over 10 years, while increasing the number of season tickets available from 53,000 to 69,000.

At present it is believed to be Goldmann Sachs and Delta Airlines that are in competition for the naming rights

Dermot Desmond and Brian Quinn of Celtic are believed to have instigated proceedings as far back as October 2006

80,000? that'd be fucking amazing man :D gotta say like, it's about time the kerrydale street stand came into conjunction with the other three stands :D nae tae mention how much this could benefit the club both on and off the pitch, financially, could easily sell up several thousand more season books, nae tae mention the added atmosphere which'd be even more impressive:eek: gotta admit i hope there is some substance in this!

how the hell can they expand something that's in danger of not seeing out the decade?
Celtic Park scraped a safety certificate initially.......not common knowledge but true nevertheless. It gets constant monitoring as some of those cracks aint getting any smaller.A friend of mine is a construction manager and has dealings with Structural Surveyers/Engineers who reckon that there will need to be some serious structural work done on the stadium in the not to distant future for it to be granted a safety certificate.

The Bunnet threw the place up in double quick time for the least money possible. Now it's starting to show.

i had heard rumours of this expansion, but i had also heard whispers of what nelly was talking about too. the expansion would be great for the club in many ways but as i dont know anything about the construction industry i cant really add anything objective or useful to the thread. only thing i can think of is if the powers at be are confident that this can be done they must have some sort of idea how to deal with any problems (i hope)

They have no option but to do the rennovative work on Celtic Park(if its needed) because they nominated it as the main stadium for the commonwealth games and they cannot go back on the agreement.

At the moment the council are contemplating a £650m subway upgrade right past the stadium, so im sure a wee bit of reconstructive surgery to Celtic Park wont faze them. Nelly, im sure any probs with the stadium would be pointed at the main stand which, if they were to look into modifying CP then surely they would just knock that stand down!?

the expansion would for sure look great, but do they have to sell the naming rights? :(

discuss the expansion of Celtic Park to 80,000

I'm actually a wee bit disappointed by this! The original plan spoke about was just to knock down the main stand and rebuild it like the other 3 stands. If that was carried out, Celtic Park would be a 90,000 seater!

ehm  the rich? the owners of celtic fc, the other organisations highlighted in that sentence who are in line to benifit financially from this deal etc.

you gave me a negative asking me to defend myself, well for one why should public money be spent on a private institution, secondly this private institution is not even supported by everyone in scotland in fact some people in scotland hate them. So why should their tax money be spent on financing a private limited football club?

Secondly who do you think benifits from this use of public money? The public? How? Football is a luxury it is not a public service nor is it essential nor does it serve everyone in the community (though most here would disagree :p) but that is the truth.

No doubt the people who own celtic are laughing their asses off as they deposit their cheque from the government to build their stadium.

Your pointing the finger of blame at Celtic. You have bolded the original post in places, when read, tells the story of Celtic scheming to screw the public over. Bending laws and such

Putting a regulation in place so they can destroy the main stand effects nobody except those connected with Celtic. I fail to understand why you highlight it, however Celtic(which its not, its the Scottish Exec) are bending the rules, it must be bad!

Point the finger of blame at the Scottish exec if you're going to blame anyone. Celtic dont run the Scottish Exec.

Celtic wont see a penny, if and when anything happens.

Who chose to host the commonwealth games and elect Celtic Park (full knowing the main stand grade-a listing & potential problems)... ?

I tell you this for free, it wasnt Celtic.

I do think the first post is extremely exaggerated anyway (no offense Jimmy). Pinch of salt stuff.

You deserve a neg rep, because you never thought your bold posting through first!

originally when the bid was going through i read that celtic park and ibrox were both going to host the sevens. when the plans came in to expand to parkhead to its full potential was just wonderin if they planned to use it for something else.

or was nelly right and the council were just begging for an excuse to expand parkhead :p we all know how impartial those glasgow council lot can be
