Default BT outbids ESPN-UK

BT Oust ESPN in Bumper Premier League Deal
Quote:
The Premier League have sold the domestic broadcast rights for 2013-16 for £3.018bn to BskyB and BT - an increase of £1.254bn on the current deal.

Sky have bought five of the seven available packages for 2013/14 to 2015/16, totalling 116 matches per year, while BT have ejected ESPN to acquire 32 matches.

BT's package includes 18 of the 38 first-choice picks, which means some of the most high-profile games will be theirs.
Phew...........almost double what ESPN paid. I wonder if this implies anything at all for US rights. It'll definitely drive the price up.

Erm, none yet as far as I know - British Telecom are just another big fuckoff 'cable' supplier in the UK. I assume they'll just create a couple of new channels to carry the coverage (a bit like the ESPN UK & Setanta channels that never existed before their successful bids).

I'm now just waiting for next seasons SPL coverage to be taken up by Borlands Darts & Television on Leith Walk, after a succesful bid of £27.50 & a LIDL bag full of empty Barrs bottles.

bittorent. duh.

I'd like to see what the packages looked like. Do they sell "big matches" as a package, or all the Top 4 (however you define that these days) matches as a package? Etc.

They sell access to their channel, they used to do a pay per view option also but abandoned that as no one bought crap games. The differnece with this deal is BT have more of the bigger games and will be more appealing unlike Setanta/ESPN who had few decent games.

Irony of all this is that this trying to break the monopoly of SKY in the end hurts the consumer as greater choice just means you have to subscribe to two channels.

I am getting Sky installed in Sept, irony is it is cheaper than basic cable here but will not bother with ESPN or BT the following year, you can just watch those games on streams

Crazy amount of money they have paid tho, would imagine next year Sports package will go up significantly on SKY
