Default Munich chairman threatens Fifa

Bayern Munich's chairman has threatened to sue Fifa if they do not pay the wages of his club's international players during the World Cup.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge cited the huge profits that the world governing body make from such tournaments as his reason.

He told WirtschaftsWoche: "Fifa have set up their statutes in such a way that we, the clubs, must release our highly paid players for free.

"With these players, Fifa are making billions in turnover and a huge profit without giving the clubs their fair slice. That is a clear monopoly situation.

"The players earn extra money as they not only continue to be paid by the clubs, but also receive bonuses and extra sponsorship money.

"The only losers are the clubs, who go home with nothing and, in the worst-case scenario, with injured players."

Rummenigge, who represents Bayern in the G14 lobby group of leading European clubs, has laid down proposals for a remuneration package to ease the financial burden on clubs.

He said: "The maths are quite easy - there are 32 teams at the World Cup, all with a squad of 23, which makes a total of around 740 players whose salaries Fifa should be paying."

"The G14 has calculated that Fifa would have to pay around £140 million to
compensate the clubs completely.

"If Fifa cannot make us an acceptable offer, then we will unfortunately have to take this to the courts."

Nonsense!!!

However, a very easy solution to the whole
"he was injured while playing for his national team" argument, is have the National Team pick up the insurance premiums on the insurance policy that protect the teams when a player (the insurance covers his salary whilst injured).
It happens in hockey, why not get with the times and institute this?

Coming from a man who has actually played in a World Cup...

Someone please write him an e-mail in German and tell him that if player performs well at a World Cup, then that club's asset increases. I am sure that he will not complain when Ballack is sold to Chelsea, or maybe he will.

No transfer-money but i wouldnt call that for free
As far as i know he´ll get the contract that those other Chelsea-Stars already have (7 600 000 € per Season? ) plus alot of hand-money (my guess 15 000 000€).

I'm sorry, but this guy couldn't be more out of his mind. I think FC Bayern's board members are pissed that Ballack is leaving for free, and now they wanna get some money in any way possible!

That's bollocks.

All it will do is raise the prices all round. The bigger clubs will sell them for more money but they will also pay more for whom they want. The better players already play for big clubs(mostly).

The only benefit is if a player plays for a 3rd/4th division team and there aren't too many of those.

What if a smaller club e.g. Charlton wants to sign someone they like at the WC? They can't afford it if the prices are pushed up.
