if I remember correctly, his mother was ill and he wanted more time to spend with his family...

In addition, he said that the scrutiny/critisismn he got from the Argentine press and the people where causeing his mother to loose her health faster. The stress being a bit much for a women in her state.

villareal underwent more changes than any other side I can think of: cani, pires, cygan, somoza, fuentes, nihat, I can think of offhand and now mati fernandez..it's bound to affect team cohesion and I think they've suffered this season due to so many changes
the times I've seen him play riquelme has looked fine, but the team has struggled
hopefully they'll do better in the second half and make europe next year
they're only 5 points from the top 6! the key is that someone needs to start scoring
I hope riquelme stays on

you're guys are right about the national team though I think it was more than his mother's health
riquelme is not a player who thrives in the spotlight (or in the pitch black behind it)..he is a genius, but a low key one
he and pekerman didn't want to go on because they'd never escape the blame when they should have lifted the cup

Good point.

I suspect that he's probably the most expensive player in the world in today behind Henry and Ronaldinho. In today's inflated Chelsea market that is. He's been on loan to Villarreal from Barcelona for 4 or 5 years. He has to be incredibly expensive for a team to only take him on loan that long.

Villarreal really some attacking players. Pires is out for the season. I was hoping Reyes would go there instead of Real Madrid. He would have been starting every week instead of struggling for a place. If Villarreal get some attacking players in the transfer window they should be back in Europe next season.

i completely agree, i personally would love to see them try to get Tevez. I think that it would be a good move for everyone involved.

Actually, he;s not on loan anymore.. he was on loan 2 seasons ago but Villareal bought him.. not sure how much.... RIquelme was the best player in last years WC in my opinion... Villareal need another foward. Forlan is not getting it done and matias fernandez is an attacking midfielder... Tevez would be amazing and he;s not gona cost too much... Mascherano would be a perfect fit also but i doubt they will get him... Valencia and Juve are top targets for mascherano..

Maxi Lopez might also be someone that would do well with good service. He's got some talent, just not a good supporting case(or when he has had that, no playing time). Someone i'd take on loan for 6 months, with a buy options involved.
